This type of trifle is a family favourite at Christmas time,and the birds powder custard is the best,bless her my gran used to be able to thicken it straight away without reheating it,I am not sure if she used boiling milk but it was perfect every time ,she made up the paste with the powder,sugar and a little milk,then heated the milk when it was ready poured it in stirring all the time and it thickened perfectly,I still cannot make it work lol

Never stint on alcohol. Robert Atkinson, your Nan got it totally right. I seldom drink but a couple of bowls of decent trifle and I'm beyond all hope.🤣

This is the first time I have seen someone use the juice from the fruit in with the jello in these YT videos, it is a good idea. I have not seen anyone use the jelly roll either, I remember my mum using jelly roll for trifle.

Thank you for this - it looks a really good traditional trifle - my favourite pudding. As I have diabetes I use fruit in juice, sugar free jelly and granulated sweetener inthe custard.

I made this and it turned out brilliant, everyone loved it. I never thought about using the fruit juice for the jelly before and it just adds that extra flavor. Thank you for putting up the video.

Is this a 1980s retro version? It's just like the ones the ladies at church used to bring to dinners, when I was a kid! That's when I fell in love with sherry trifle, but I haven't seen one like it since then (I do mine with fresh berries and plain sponge. Took me back!

The instructions for this leave a lot to be desired. When it is time for the cream to go on. The cream appears out of now where. I honestly thought it was cream cheese like you put on cheese cake. Only from looking at other recipes on youtube I realise it is double cream and not cream cheese. Does anyone know how much double cream to use in this recipe. Also how much cherry are you supposed to use in this recipe? Regards, Mark.

Sorry for that Andrew ,whip up about 600 ml thickened cream and with one teaspoon sugar and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla essence I would use about 3 tablespoons of sherry would be nice Thanks for watching....CM

Proper trifle is made with real jam, fresh fruit, and homemade custard. Jelly was a depression/ war years substitute that stuck. But the original is still best.

I have made many while in Australia, they teach me how to do it, this one look lovely I will try to do it. Thank you. It's not always easy to find the Jelly crystals in France, but likely I have found a little Irish shop that have some, so it's perfect. love the Port wine Jelly flavour.

I love trifle! What an enjoyable video this was to watch. I think it's so important that a trifle tastes like a traditional trifle as we know it but I think it's even better if it can look a little fresher and more modern! I hope you might like my version of a traditional trifle 👩🏻🍳🎂✨✨

How do you make the custard chocolatey?
@woohooboy5 жыл бұрын
Out of all the KZbin videos I've seen, this is the closet one with regards to how I like my trifle. The coconut is a nice extra touch (though not essential). However the nuts are not needed at all. There needs to be the right balance of sponge cake, fruit, cream, custard and jelly which this version has. There are too many recipes that overdo the amount of fruit in the trifle or put way too much cream in the mixture.

This is wonderful! I never thought of using the fruit juice in the actual jelly. What would be great to go with the coconut on top, would be using coconut milk with the custard too. I'm so gonna try this this week, Thankyou so much Chef!!
@dorothybeveridge31334 жыл бұрын
I don’t put jelly in mine . I put sponge in bottom with a tin of fruit & juice & pour sherry in & leave to soak over night. Add custard, leave to cool & add cream & topping. Best trifle. X

Yes this Triffles are to dye, mainly in summer it's cool & fresh, & go faster than hot cakes, But for Christmas it would go well. Enjoy it
@Tina-cu6jv2 жыл бұрын
Sorry if my questions are silly but I have never made trifle, custard or jelly ! But I have been asked to make a trifle for Christmas ! Do you wait for the custard to go cold before you pour it on the jelly fruit mixture? Also, how do you know if the jelly has set ? Or do you wait for the jelly to set before pouring the custard on top? Thankyou.
@ChefMooneys2 жыл бұрын
thanks for watching, let the jelly set before you add the custard, let the custard cool slightly and poor over the jelly, you can then place it into the fridge to set before adding the cream,...CM

@MrsGump9 жыл бұрын
This is very similar to how i make my Christmas trifle (that's my job every year). Instead of a swiss/jelly roll, I just buy a square/rectangle sponge pair, and stick the top and bottom sponges together with a decent helping of raspberry (or what flavour you prefer) jam. Then I cube the sponge and layer it on the bottom of the bowl. Instead of using jelly, I just use mixed fruit -drained well-(mixed berrys are yummy, as are a mix of tinned peaches, apricots, mango, pear etc) on top of the sponge bits and then drizzle over sherry and the leftover fruit juices, enough to make the sponges moist but not soaking wet (too wet goes sloppy, and don't forget some juices will still seep out of the fruit). Then I make packet custard and pour it over the top, making sure it gets in between all the gaps between the sponge bits, down the sides of the bowl, be generous. When cold and set, then I add my whipped cream. I am in charge of this every year and my mum makes me make an extra one in a wee bowl, just for her lol. It lasts for days in the kitchen and is even better the next day :-)

Thank you for this lovely trifle video. It's the most appealing I have seen sofar. My question is - I'm not a Sherry fan and I don't have any but I have a fine malt whisky. Do you think that would work? Not too dominating? Dalwhinnie is not very peaty and not too strong but I don't know...
