The Spanish were utterly enthralled by the amount of gold that existed across the country at the time (during this era, there was so much gold in the Americas that the Aztec peoples used it to make not just jewelry but decorations, furniture, structures, and even entire buildings). The Aztec people did not have any advanced weaponry. Their most powerful weapon was a wooden club lined with obsidian spikes. The Spanish had guns. So when the time came that the soldiers had to actually fight to get the gold they, like most invaders, saw the other side as not human and that the gold was rightfully theirs. So every Aztec person they captured, they killed. Edit: It was Columbia that they invaded and not Mexico. Sorry.
