A world-record deal of around £890,000 ($1.1m) has been agreed for Chelsea to sign defender Naomi Girma from San Diego Wave; the current record is £695,000 ($860,000) when Racheal Kundananji moved to Bay FC from Madrid CFF; centre-back expected to have a medical this week.

Everyone says Naomi Girma is the best defender in the world and for the first two years of her professional career, I just did not get it (at all). I tend to measure defenders by the qualities more likely to be found in attacking players, so it wasn't until the Olympics (either Zambia or the Germany game) that I suddenly saw what all the plaudits were about, and I must say, I was gobsmacked. Then coincidently, at the end of the game, as if on cue, Emma Hays said what she said which had me nodding my head emphatically because I had literally just witnessed it for myself. It was extraordinary to finally notice the full depth and breadth of Naomi's game. I was seriously impressed. But allow me to throw another name into the ring. A name that no one is talking about or drawing comparisons with (yet), and a name few who have seen her play are likely to have any strong objections to (because she's that good). She's younger than Naomi and has the same qualities in her game, except that I would go the extra mile and say that she is better than Naomi was when Naomi was her age. I'd be interested to hear who you think I am referring to (you might not even have heard of her). Please reply to this message if this has in any way piqued your curiosity...

@@dylansharkey6040 It's got nothing to do with her being too far away. The reason she isn't already a pro footballer is that she wants to complete her education as a graduate of Harvard University. @@babatundetijani524 Please accept my apology for the delayed response. I thought it best to give those interested in knowing the answer time to respond back first (because a lot of people did reply). The player I was referring to commands her backline with as much authority as Naomi Grima and in a 50-50 sprint I think the youngster might just edge it, but either way it would be hella close. She is 21 years of age and has 26 senior caps for her country. She did not make the trip to Australia for the 2023 World Cup because she was forced to redraw due to injury. Her national team subsequently did not make it out of the group stage. She was, however, fit to play at the 2024 Olympics where her national team, despite a massive disruption to their preparation, were a tour de force, surprising everyone (even themselves). Simply put, they were a different proposition with her in the backline. Last but not least, this young lady for some reason, is not in a hurry to turn professional choosing instead to continue to play her club football at the NCAA college level for Harvard Crimson. When she finally does leave college (I think she is in her Senior year) and puts herself on the market she will have a big decision to make i.e. whether she wants to play for Barcelona, Leon, Arsenal or Chelsea, or stay and play in the NWSL because (mark my words) all of the world's biggest clubs will be hard on her chase for her signature. If you still haven't figured it out yet, Look up "Jade Rose." of the Canada WNT. Unfortunately, she doesn't have a highlight reel of any note so I recommend you watch some of the games she has recently played against the USWNT as well as Canada's recent 1-1 draw against the mighty Spain who needed a desperate last-minute equalise to avoid defeat. Hope it was worth the wait.

Once she controls the ball she can advance forward and distributes the ball very well. She is one of the best defensive players we have today. This is the one major problem with the NWSL. It has been the best league in the world. The problem is that now that Europe has realized women's soccer is a money maker, the clubs are associated with very large men's clubs, so they have a lot more money to spend on players. The leagues aren't as good, but I can't vaguely blame the women for looking towards their own financial future.
