I love your honesty and humbleness. As a 73 year old digital artist trying to move on to traditional paint, this is very inspirational.

I really love this look in a painting. Nicolai Fechin was able to get a similar look in some of his paintings, and one of the things he did was he would lay out his paints the night before on newspaper to draw some of the oil out of the paint. This allowed him to use a dry brush technique. Also, makeup sponges make great wipe out tools. You can get bags of them on AZ fairly cheap.

I find this kind of painting easier personally. But I work with charcoal and I'm currently learning oil painting. I fail miserably at alla prima or any direct, expressive styles of painting. But I can do what I have been referring to as "an overly detailed underpainting" pretty well. Happy to learn there is a proper name for these. Open grisaille sounds far better than overly detailed underpainting 😂... this is a beautiful portrait BTW ❤

Love the variation of colors that offers many more nuances than a monochromatic piece. Yes, it definitely makes think of charcoal on which I am working now.

Lovely demo and explanations! Do you ever grid or measure? I’m amazed at how you’re able to sketch the face freestyle! Thanks 😊

I also love that style of painting -and I am also attracted to the warm amber glow -🧡♥️and maybe it is misleading with the word deceptively hard in the title - maybe better to write “ open grisaille” Oil painting. But luckily the very attractive photo of your beautifully painted portrait made me open the video so once more the image is staying it all - its truly a very seducing style that I want to try my only worry is that i do not like to use mineral spiritus of any kind 🙃😊🙏🌹♥️

I’ve been looking for a used Alla Prima II book but they appear to be more expensive than a new one! Do you have hardcover or soft cover version of this book?
@ChelseaLang2 күн бұрын
I highly recommend Alla Prima II! You won't regret it. I have the soft cover version. :)
