I remember Ron Cooke well when he was the Provost of my college, Derwent. He used to invite all the new Derwent students round to his house for dinner, a corridor at a time. That was thirty years ago - ouch! No Campus East then; Langwith and Goodricke were 1960s Buildings on the first campus, like Derwent still is now. Harry Enfield had lived on my corridor years earlier. According to the cleaners he used to put geese in his room!

Good grief!! The place is huge, with subject departments that didn't exist in my time. I haven't visited the University for years. I graduated in physics in 1969!!! My first year was in the 'old' Langwith (facing the chemistry department on the opposite side of the road and adjacent to the 'old' Derwent), with labwork in one wing of the Chemistry department (they were finishing construction of the physics labs near the lake). In my second year I had digs in a widowed lady's bungalow to the rear of the parish church. My final year was in the 'old' Alcuin, there seems to have been huge alterations to this college. I did postgraduate education at Leeds, but lived for a while in a fleapit near to Heslington Road chippy. Now I'm ancient, I need to revisit, especially the King Charles XII pub. One really good memory I have is that, because there were only a few hundred undergraduates in the early days, there was a common room in Heslington hall, with French windows onto the rear gardens, easy chairs and easy access - very pleasant indeed. I suspect no-one is allowed in there now with there being thousands of undergraduates.
@jkrock66352 жыл бұрын
I was there in 1998, and the population was still small, I loved the pub. I might not visit it again, I want to keep my memories intact.

Hey, I did a BTEC in Creative Media and got D*DD. The application process is all based on your personal statement and grades. When I was at York, they essentially interviewed anyone that was likely to meet the grade entry requirement. I didn't prep for the interview and got in. It's more on how you think and problem solve than anything else. Best of luck!

Im super indecisive over which campus to go for. East looks more aesthetically pleasing but I'm somewhat concerned about being far away and excluded from social opportunities on West. Any thoughts? How would you weigh up the pros and cons?
@sunnie73414 жыл бұрын
I’d say if you’re lazy and don’t want to move from campuses every day, stay where your department is. If you don’t mind getting the bus for class every day, east have nicer accommodations and everything is newer/nicer, but also quieter (there’s only one student bar) I don’t think you’ll be excluded from any social opportunities, you’ll just have to go to west as most societies works there, so if you don’t mind getting the free bus which is usually about a 10 min ride (including waiting) Hope that helps!

This is so great!! did you feel out of the loop at all living/studying on East? That's my plan for this September! Also, how was living in halls for second year? Better or worse than moving off campus? Tempted to stay in halls (partly because I did half a degree before and liked halls way more) so I'd love to know what you think
@ChelsieAngeles4 жыл бұрын
Not at all, East was always pretty busy and Constantine has 600 people in it alone! Halls was definitely preferable to living off campus. It was easier, less faff, you're guaranteed to get things fixed quickly etc. Only downside with halls is living with 12 people/sharing with 12 people. But the mess is just as bad in a student house, except with halls at least you get cleaners. I'm glad I had the experience of living off for third year but i did prefer halls!
