These videos make me realize that I'm not stupid, I just have awful professors. I'm glad I get a better education on youtube than in the class for which I pay boat loads of money....

Gosh my textbook made this seemingly simple concept more difficult than usual, however this video simplifies all of these steps.

i thought that you have to consider the oxidations states or numbers before balancing charges?
@ChemFlicks
@ChemFlicks 10 жыл бұрын
There are two different methods to balance redox reactions. The oxidation number method is one and the other one is the half-cell method, which is the method used in this video. In the half-cell method, you don't need to use oxidation numbers of each atom. You do need the total ionic charges on each side though, so you can balance charge by adding electrons to the appropriate side.

ChemFlicks thank u and which one would you recomend?
@ChemFlicks
@ChemFlicks 10 жыл бұрын
k4bloggs Hi. I actually prefer the half-reaction method (sometimes called the "half-cell" method). Most textbooks introduce both methods. This particular video addresses only half-reactions. To balance overall redox reactions you need to separate it into two half-reactions, balance each one (like is done on this video), then add them up to get the balanced overall reaction. That is done on the chemflick video "Balancing Redox Reactions" ( Balancing Redox Reactions HD ). Some teachers require you to be able to use both methods. Make sure you know what is required.
