The chemical chameleon is a series of reactions of reduction of potassium permanganate into potassium manganate and into manganese dioxide sequentially.
I will mix potassium permanganate with an aqueous solution of sugar and sodium hydroxide. Each one of the resultant products has a different color and this makes that this redox (reduction-oxidation) experiment very attractive to see.

Today I will make a reaction known as chemical chameleon and for this
0:06
I'll wear protection goggles and gloves.
0:09
This is a redox reaction in which I will use
0:13
potassium permanganate, that is a powerful oxidant and sugar this is a reductor.
0:18
In basic medium. For this I will put sodium hydroxide or caustic soda in the water
0:26
Put a teaspoon of sodium hydroxide ...
0:33
Three teaspoons of sugar and add water.
0:42
To dissolve it well I will use this magnetic stirrer. I put the magnet ...
0:55
On the other hand, I'll put a little amount of potassium permanganate in this beaker.
1:00
A few crystals and add a little water.

Notice that we obtain a purple solution.
1:16
In alkaline aqueous medium and in the presence of a reducing agent such as sugar, potassium permanganate with
1:22
intense violet color is reduced to potassium manganate green
1:27
and subsequently manganese dioxide yellowish brown.

And before concluding I want to send a best regards to Román Gómez Marín from Guadalajara in Mexico;
