It looks like you are trying to figure out the formula for aluminum oxide using ionic charges. Each aluminum atom has 3 valence electrons, so you want to lose all of them. Each oxygen atom needs 2 electrons to fill its valence level. So take 2 Al atoms and remove the valence electrons to get Al3+ and Al3+. You now have 6 electrons to give away. Next take 3 O atoms and give each one 2 electrons to get O2-, O2-, and O2-. That uses up all 6 electrons. Finally, if you combine the 2 (Al3+) with the 3 (O2-), you get Al2O3. You now have a formula in which the positive charge (2 x +3 = +6) balances out the negative charge (3 x -2 = -6) and you don’t have any electrons “left over”. In future problems of this type, just remember that you often will have more than just one atom that loses electrons and one atom that gains electrons.
