I've wondered about how chemical sunscreens, being absorptive, tend to make people feel a bit hotter in the sun, while you'd think mineral sunscreens being reflective, would allow you to feel cooler in the sun, even by just a little bit. For this reason would chemical sunscreens be a nice choice for having bare skin during cooler cloudy days such as in the fall and winter, vs, maybe mineral sunscreen on hot summer days?
@pleasedontlookforme80362 жыл бұрын
Not really, because the mineral and chemical suncreams either reflect or absorb UV radiation, whilst heat is absorbed via infrared radiation from the sun and anything else that emits heat. They're two different types of electromagnetic waves on the spectrum, and suncream doesn't really do anything to infrared radiation, so using mineral or chemical won't really affect how hot you get.
@jbalazer2 жыл бұрын
@@pleasedontlookforme8036 , heat can be generated by the absorption of any type of electromagnetic radiation, not just infrared radiation. UV light and visible light can be turned to heat when absorbed. Sunscreen chemicals turn the UV light they absorb into heat.

I have a question. Does sunscreen break down by time or by sun exposure? If you're indoors for 2 hours would you have to reapply?
@DoctorKlioze3 жыл бұрын
That is actually a great question! Unfortunately, I don't have a good answer for you. We know the chemical sunscreens are absorbed by the skin over time which would definitely decrease the epidermal concentration and therefore, reduce the ability to convert UV energy to heat. There is also some degradation of the molecular structure over time by the UV light further reducing concentration. While both mechanisms are contributory, I can't tell you for sure which one is dominant. May be a good science fair project!!
@simonsaysism3 жыл бұрын
I have heard that aside from degradation due to sun exposure, your sunscreen's coverage can also be worsened by things like your own sweat/sebum production, movement of the face muscles, and accidentally rubbing it off with your hands/clothes/etc. Therefore it should be touched up after 2 hours regardless of sun exposure.

From what I've heard, blue light isn't a big health concern for most people, but if you're darker skinned, it can cause you to get dark spots. To protect from the blue light in sunlight, you have to use a mineral (inorganic) sunscreen. For more details, check out Lab Muffin Beauty Science here on youtube.

Chemical sunscreens should go first, and should be absorbed into your skin for 10/15 mins. Mineral sunscreens should be the last thing you apply as they reflect.

This was so much fun to watch, but I got a question sir. The reason I watched this video is to getter better insight in what kind of sunscreen I should buy. Since mineral sunscreen doesnt even allow the uvlight to penetrate the skin I would assume that that's better? So I should go for a vegan (important for me) mineral sunscreen with at least spf 35? Would that give me enough protection?

Well most experts i guess say mineral is sooooo much better at protecting. But inmportant make sure its broad spectrum. And is mostly zinc oxide (i forgoy how to spell zinc oxide but it has zinc and ox something) :)
@DoctorKlioze4 жыл бұрын
Both types afford protection but, because of the chemical nature of the organic sunscreens, I believe most dermatologists are recommending the mineral type compounds (Zinc and Titanium) to their patients. Neither the chemical or mineral products are derived from animal products so that shouldn't be a problem with your diet preference.

S Turk it depends what country you live in. Many European and Asian sunscreens have formulations that are superior to mineral sunscreens.
@werewolfcountry4 жыл бұрын
I tend to user a mineral sunscreen (Jason : broad spectrum spf 30) round my eyes because chemical sunscreen starts stinging (I still use sunglasses on top) . Then chemical on my ears and neck as they tend to not leave a white caste and are easier to rub in. Like the experts say, there's no difference in terms of protection between the two, so I would just go by what suits you and the area of your body that you're applying it to.

@Gwen say whaaaat? the syntax of your question is as flawed as your logic. I was comparing the life of your litter to the cycle of water; "out of sight out of mind". Water, too, has a life after the drain and if you take that into consideration, you may care more about poisoning it. Maybe try a mineral sunscreen with no fragrance? Anywho, I don't care what you in particular do- I can't change that- but, I do care when people spread harmful mistruths to justify what they do. P.S. if it kills the coral, imagine what it does to your body!
@pierce31953 жыл бұрын
@@helenalaney it's quite ironic that you're telling "chemical" sunscreens to be toxic when they're supposedly those with carbons meaning they're organic by nature. Fearmongering sunscreens to be part of coral reef problems just shows lack of understanding on what coral reefs really find problematic in the current situation we are in.

Why is making your skin absorb more uv light (shown as black areas where the lotion was applied) considered a good thing? I'd expect it to become brighter, ie more reflective, so most of the uv ray energy doesn't "remain" in the skin.
@Radjehuty2 жыл бұрын
What UV wavelengths did the camera pick up? It was my understanding that Zinc oxide and Titanium Dioxide don't just simply reflect/scatter UV light. The first 90-95% of bands between UVB, UVA II and some UVA I are absorbed while the longer wavelengths of UVA I and in to visible light are reflected/scattered. This should be why mineral sunscreens should be darker but not totally black like chemical sunscreens.
@DoctorKlioze2 жыл бұрын
I can't answer that but I can tell you I used a Canon EOS Rebel T5 modified to be sensitive to the UV spectrum (UV filter in front of the CMOS chip was removed). I hope that helps.

@anipodat3944 ай бұрын
9:35 Isn't the "alternating single and double bonds" actually inaccurate? I believe the six bonds are in fact indistinguishable due to "electron delocalization" and the electrons are spread throughout the ring in a sort of hybrid between a single and double bond. This can be represented as a circle inside the benzene hexagon, which is a more accurate understanding.
@nayanikau20593 жыл бұрын
Excellent explanation
@sb7687 Жыл бұрын
Using percent blocked, the scale seems non-linear. But if you look at the percent transmitted(ie: dosage you will receive), this becomes more linear. Eg: If you have SPF - 50 as the baseline at 99.0% blocked or 1.0% let through - SPF 100 = 0.5% - twice as effective as 50 - SPF 50 will allow 1% - SPF 25 will allow 2% half as effective as 50 etc. This is a much more representative way of talking about SPF. Marketing will always use the % blocked metric, since it seems like there is not much difference between say SPF 30 and SPF 100. eg: 97% vs 99% But in reallity, 100 is 3 times as effective as 30.

Great video. Would you recommend to apply a mineral sunscreen over a broad-spectrum chemical one?
@DoctorKlioze2 жыл бұрын
That’s a tough question. As far as efficacy, I believe both are adequate. Personally, I don’t like the idea of adding any man-made chemical to my skin surface if I can avoid it. We know some of this will be absorbed and reportedly broken down but I wouldn’t recommend daily use. Non-micronized mineral sunscreens will markedly reduce the absorption issue but they’re a little tacky and unsightly making them hard to rinse off and giving you that ghostly white look. The micronized mineral sunscreens will reduce the negative features but increase skin absorption. My recommendation would be too reduce your sun exposure with some sort of physical barrier like clothes or an umbrella when possible and sparingly use either the mineral or chemical sun screens when necessary

I myself prefer to use mineral sunscreen that doesn’t leave white cast.Based on your explaination, those sunscreens are using micronized zinc oxide or/and titanium dioxide because it barely leave any white cast on face.. From the ingredient list it is impossible for us to know whether it is micronized or not because the manufacturer never mention about it.Does it mean those type of sunscreens are actually don’t protect you enough from UV rays? @DoctorKlioze4 жыл бұрын
You should be fine. There are products out there that do contain both. I don't think the combination would reduce your sun protection. In fact, what would be interesting is whether the two together would act synergistically to significantly increase your effective SPF. In other words, would a sufficient application of a 30 SPF chemical or organic sunscreen covered by a sufficient application of a 30 SPF of mineral or barrier sunscreen still give you an SPF of 30 or would it double to 60 or maybe even higher?! If you can get a hold of a good UV-meter, may be a good science-fair project!
