For the guys that are wondering about violations to the octet rule: the reason why the 3rd row elements don't always follow the octet rule is because their valence electrons are found in the 3rd energy level, which has access to an additional set of 5 d-orbitals that can each hold 2 electrons for a maximum capacity of holding an additional 10 electrons in addition to the other 8 electrons, as opposed to carbon, oxygen, etc, in the 2nd period that only have s- and p-orbitals in the 2nd energy level, allowing for a maximum of 8 electrons.

Jamil Hneini I just proved my. Chemistry teacher wrong with this video. That was my original structure but instead she showed us something else that made no sense and had some transfer of 2 electrons of an oxygen into the sulfur without sharing anything with the sulfur and it was just so wrong. She "forgot" about the sulfur rule. Science, gotta love it

Forget sulphur, YOU go home and study chemistry 😂 I mean, (almost) every student knows that octet rule works only for 2nd period elements because after that, filling of d orbitals becomes energetically favourable. Since d orbitals can participate in bond forming, sulphur( with some energy) can excite its electrons to jump to d subshell and participate in bonding. Eg: SF6, HClO4, etc.

Hey how did you know sulfur can handle 12 electrons? Is there a quick way of knowing that for any element in the p block?
@64hkal9 жыл бұрын
+Jimmy Two Times Look up octet rule exceptions. Third period and above elements can be hypervalent, meaning it can and will exceed the octet if it can minimize the formal charges in the molecule. Another exception is group 13 elements form sextets (with 6 electrons instead of the usual 8 found in octets), and a final one to remember are free radicals (odd number of valence electrons, so there will be one lone electron rather than a pairing).

What about resonance? Dont you have to draw 3 structures of SO3 that alternate the position of the double bonds?
@GoldenLacunatic9 жыл бұрын
I just learned this stuff today, so dont take my word for it, but I think the double bond resonance structure is basically an expanded version of this lewis structure maybe?
@64hkal9 жыл бұрын
+erik1000ism No, because the structure you are thinking of is not the optimal structure. The structure shown in the video (with the sulfur being hypervalent) minimizes formal charges on every atom, which makes it a more valid structure than a resonance structure with a 2+ on the sulfur, and 1-'s on two oxygens.

Of course, sulfur is hypervalent and can handle 12 electrons and since formal charges that are closest to 0 are the most stable, sulfur trioxide has no resonance structures.

Thanks for this video. My doubt may seem stupid but please answer it. In a molecule like CO32- the oxygen atom being just 6 electrons so even after forming a single covalent bond with the carbon atom it should have just 7 electrons which is less than octet. From where does it get the other electron? Please answer
@abhinavsharma59354 жыл бұрын
its not only sulfur guys...every cental atom can neglect the octet rule. It will always have 8 or more electrons. the reason why it has more than 8 electrons is because theres another rule which states that C.A always tries to remain in max. covalency. (hope this helps you)

Can so3 have resonating structures?please tell me sir
@chemistNATE5 жыл бұрын
I say yes. * SO3 can have three double-bonded O's * SO3 could have two double-bonded O's and one single-bonded O (any one of the three could be single-bonded) --> some teacher will say this creates a "formal charge" imbalance but it's still a valid resonance structure. * SO3 could technically have two single-bonded O's and one double-bonded. Any teacher who thinks Sulfur MUST follow the octet rule will think this is the valid structure.
@TheBruntje10 жыл бұрын
How come sulfur had a formal charge of 2+ in the seconde structure you wrote? If sulfur has 6 valence elektrons and only 4 of them are in a bond, isn't sulfur supposed to have 2 non bonding elektrons?

I'd like to see you draw the orbital pictures of two pi bonds in one resonance structure for SO3. The answer is, they would have to occupy the same space at the S, which is not a reasonable answer. With three electron domains, S would be sp2 hybridized, with a single pi bond, analogous to carbonate and nitrate. Stop and think about the actual physical placement of those regions of electron density of a pi bond before making such a ridiculous suggestion as more than one pi in an sp2 system.
