Thanks for your work...just wanted to ask what do you exactly mean by level of saturation of carbon?because the only one I know is that alkenes are unsaturated while alkanes are saturated...are there other meanings?

the degree of saturation is not exclusive to alkenes. It just refers to the number of multiple bonds (double or triple bonds) in a compound. So if a compound has many multiple bonds, eg C=C, C=O, nitrile, benzene then it is said to be highly unsaturated. Conversely if we have alkanes where all the bonds are single bonds then it is highly saturated. Alcohols, halogenoalkanes are also examples of saturated compounds since there are no double or triple bonds in them.

Why CN Attack through C not through N?

for CN- the carbon is the one that is negatively charged and the better nucleophile as compared to nitrogen. So C will be the one that attacks the carbonyl carbon.
