I just went for a drive and came back yesterday. But I had taken the tammampatti, mullukurichi route. It did not have so many hairpin bends but the route was awesome. You get to travel through different landscapes in that route. There is a very thick jungle patch where it is so dark even on a perfectly sunny day. Then there are villages where you can see paddy fields in step irrigation. And there are completely barren strips in some places. So beautiful to drive by. You must try that once.

If you are going by car, search for "Kolli hills Road", don't search Kolli hills. "Kolli hills Road" will show you the main highway road. It's through 72 hairpin bends, but it's the best route.

Best time is during monsoon Or after monsoon, else during winter. I visited in April 2022. Weather was decent not very cold. Enjoy your trip and travel safe.
