The idea was that, the pressure of putting it on video would be good practice of coping with the pressure of a real exam.

He did an amazing job! I did my first ever violin exam last week and it’s not as bad or as nerve racking as it seems. I got an A+ High Distinction and I was very nervous. To everyone starting off in their first exam or any exam, just think of it as you playing to one of your family members that you haven’t seen in a long time and you want to show off all of your hard work and effort over the year to them! Good luck to everyone with your exams 🙂

A mark can either be 118 or 120. A clear pass or merit. Examiners don't cross reference.

I agree with you, but this is a mock exam and the stimulus BEFORE a real exam to get that extra one mark for a merit is motivational rather than frustrating

This was actually last year and he got a merit in the real exam 124, so slightly better on the day. I think he found this "mock experience" beneficial.

How long would it take an average student to attain this, or a similar level of ability and knowledge?
@ChenPiano2 жыл бұрын
From scratch about 2 years on average, obviously there is a big variation in ability and self motivation.

Thanks. Just out of interest, are you trained as an ABRSM examiner?
@ChenPiano6 жыл бұрын
I have over 30 years teaching experience and when I give my students mock exams the real result is usually very close. Not officially trained, but I think my assessment is pretty reliable.

Hello, I have to be at an equivalent of a grade 4 for my music exam in two years and I’m currently just starting piano but know a tiny bit so do you have any tips on how I can do this considering I do not have lessons either?
@ChenPiano5 жыл бұрын
I would concentrate on developing your sight reading skills - an area often overlooked by many students who focus just on 3 pieces. With regard to not having a teacher, you may find it difficult to understand some of the finer points, if it is a question of not having a good local teacher, may I recommend online lessons. I know MusicOnline UK do Skype lessons and an appraisal service www.music-online.org.uk/p/skype-lessons.html

He wouldn’t recieve 119/150 as Abrsm does not give marks one mark off of a mark band because it’s too frustrating for the pupil.
@ChenPiano6 жыл бұрын

@butterflywings56446 жыл бұрын
I always wondered this, ie if examiners avoid giving 99/ 119 etc. I don't know whether examiners have to decide the mark for each element on the spot, and stick rigidly to that, even if the total is one off the next band - or whether they have time to reflect and could decide to be generous and find an extra mark ☺ (or mean and remove one of course, if they were cruel). Anyone know?
