Refiling the CLI-42 carts the right way!
The refilling of the CANON Pixma PRO-100 CLI-42 Cartridges has to be done CORRECTLY if you expect them to behave and perform as reliably as the Brand New out of the box OEM cartridges.
Failing to do this correctly and you can indeed damage your Print Head so.....

Joe, I'm back again! I finally was able to refill a cart BEFORE it ran dry! I listened to you and caught it in time (i.e, after getting the "low ink" warning, but before getting the "ink empty" symbol). My question today concerns resetting the chip in such a situation. Though you don't discuss resetting in this video, I'd thought I'd ask the question here instead instead of one of your older videos due to this video's recency. Up till now, I had only refilled an entire set of cartridges which I had let run dry. Thus I used the resetter to reset those chips. But for this most recent cart, since it had not run dry yet, I experimented by NOT resetting the chip. I simply added ink to the cart and put it back in the printer. TO THE POINT: The Ink Level display properly indicated that cartridge was now full! Again, before refilling, the Ink Level display showed the cart was at "low Ink" (exclamation point symbol and low ink level depicted). Now, WITHOUT RESETTING, it shows the cart is full! MY QUESTION: So we DON'T have to reset the chips if the reservoir doesn't run empty? As I've watched almost all of your refilling videos, this tidbit never registered with me. I simply assumed that you always reset the chip every time you refill. But now, I'm concluding that you only NEED TO RESET when the cart runs empty and/or when you do a flush. Otherwise (i..e, if the reservoir does NOT go empty), then resetting the chip is not required. Is that all true, or is my one-time experience with the cart I just refilled an anomaly? UPDATE! I may've spoke too soon! Several hours after posting the above, upon my next print job, that same cartridge (that I refilled) now shows a low ink warning - the same as it did before I refilled. So I guess even a low ink cartridge has to have its chip reset. Sorry for wasting your time. I'll leave this comment in place in case it provides any educational value. Thanks!
@cheo1949

Your story is typical of MANY others who have tried the same attempt to fool the printer. But you cannot fool that printer. It will know what you're trying to do. So always reset every single time whether you're doing a partial refill or not. Always reset your chip to full and then top off the cartridge to full that way they both match.

Hey there Mr. Jose, terrific information. I have a question. I bought the precision colors kit. I am a bit hesitant about doing the yellow cartridge thing right now. Was thinking about buying an official yellow canon cartridge, and do the refills from precision colors for the rest of them. Then maybe, the next time yellow runs low I will also do the swapover. Should this work out okay?

Hi Jose, I've been watching your videos for a while now and find them really useful. I have a Canon 100s and use refill inks. I was wondering what your advice was on whether or not the ink cartridges should be refilled straight away once they run out or can you leave them for a while, as long as the air-tight clips are attached? When a cart runs out I must admit I tend to replace it with a fresh one and the now-empty cart has the clip attached to it and it's put in a box until I have a few more empty carts, and then I refill them all at once. I wonder however whether having no ink in them is going to cause them to start to dry out and clog? I always make sure the clip is on to protect the outlet for the cart but is leaving them empty for a few weeks harming them? Thanks

Hi Jose, I have been inspired by your channel and, as I have been worried about the cost of printing (and I do agree with you that if you have a printer you should print and not have the printer as an expensive ornament!), I have saved up a collection of CLI 42 carts to flush and refill. I have always loved the way that you (and other channels) show the remaining ink flushing out to leave a pristine white sponge behind. Sadly, in my case, I have found that in some cases, mainly magenta, cyan and yellow and the photo cyan and magenta, I cannot get rid of all the colour and instead of pristine white I achieve a nice pastel shade of the original colour. I have tried using distilled water instead of tap water, an ammonia based cleaner (Kleen Off - we cannot easily get Windex in the UK) and even the cart rejuvenation mixture you mention in a previous video. All with little effect. In the UK I have spoken to Martin of Octoinkjet who supply custom inks and he has suggested that there may be something in the water that has 'fixed' the colour into the sponge. He could be right, using distilled waters seems to help, and he has suggested that a little remnant of colour in the sponge will not impact on the performance of the cartridge. Do you have any suggestions? Best wishes, George
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 5 жыл бұрын
As long as you have flushed out as much of the original ink you will be fine. The OEM yellow should first be flushed with your ammonia based window cleaner multiple times and then with water. You should have no problems.

My daughter and I... shes my partner in our business, who does 99% of the work :-).... finally decided to get a Pro 100 and these new inks.... ONE problem....he is already sold out! Yes I know it was a limited run so bad on me to procrastinate.....but in your video, text, you wrote he would have bulk ink ready this week, assuming the new formula??? I am ordering a set or two of premodified carts from one of your viewers @Rick Johnson, so I don't need the carts FROM PC, just the ink and resetter. Did I read your message right in that he would have the newly formulated INKS at least for sale this week? Or do we really have to wait until the end of summer?? Or was that for having to wait for the end of summer for the special with the ink, carts, etc??? Anyway, daughter and I are VERY excited to see what we can create, print, sell and give away with the Pro 100 and that signature ink!! David and Heather

Hi Jose Just got the new Signature inks, I am about to try to fill my cartridges, saw your latest video on how to fill the VLI-42 carts, and you described that you were using a 4" needle to take the ink out of the bottle, and wanted to know if you used a different needle for each colour ink? Look forward to your reply as I do have to od=rder needles before I start to fill, and I am also a little fearful that I just may not do it right! Stephen

I washed the needles and syringe each time. But I normally use squeeze bottles loaded with the inks and the bottle caps house their own needles. I just did it the most common way on the video as most folks do not access to squeeze bottles for their ink refilling.

The same way. Hopefully the sponge will absorb ink. There is no real workaround. Once you mod the carts you must always reset and refill at or before the low warning. Remember. We are NOT suppose to do this and the fact we can get away with it is good enough. You will never be able to provide the optimal ink delivery that an untampered cart can. So be aware of that. The second you mod the cart it's downhill from there.

Jose, in the past you have always given 13.6 grams as the standard. As one who has flushed and dried hundreds of carts, let me say that my procedure is to dry until they don't go down at all for three days in a row. This can occasionally get down to either 13.5 OR 13.6 grams and can take 5-10 days depending on whether or not I have a fan blowing down upon them. I just wanted to mention that SOME carts will not get down to 13.5. It's just the nature of the sponges in the cart. Hope this clarification helps people.
@cheo1949

You are right. The variant seems to be the actual sponge as they do probably differ slightly in weight. I had a couple at 13.6 and the rest made it to 13.5 grams.

Joe, I'm just getting into refilling... received my PC SE kit a few days ago for my Canon Pro 100... but am confused by one aspect, which is the need to flush the OEM ink prior to initial refill. I'm not including the yellow cartridges in this question, or course. So for all *other* colors, is it necessary to flush the OEM cartridge before refilling with the PC ink? I'm confused because I've seen you take two different positions on this! In this and other videos, you advocate for always flushing the OEM cartridge before the initial refilling. Yet in written responses to online questions, and in other places, I've seen you say that it's OK to mix the PC ink with the OEM ink, indicating that an initial flush is NOT required. (Again, yellow is an entirely different matter). So is it OK for the initial PC ink refill to go directly into an OEM cartridge that still has OEM ink in the non-sponge side? Or must they always be flushed first? Thanks!
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 4 жыл бұрын
You will not see any difference in output. Maybe with other Inks but not Signature Edition. So....flushing is up to you but remember that the process rakes several days so you better have replacements carts as you can not have a printhead position without a cart installed for kore than a few minutes. So to answer your question, you can mod, rest and refill your original carts without flushing them. Except the yellow of course. You should buy a full set of modded and flushed carts from Rick Johnson EBAY store. And that will solve everything. Link is on the descriptions.
@bgm-1961

Joe, thanks for the phenomenally quick reply! I actually found the answer to my question about a half hour ago, in another one of your videos (kzbin.info/www/bejne/eHKyZq2coL9_kKc). You essentially said the same thing in that video as you wrote above. So thanks for the confirmation. I think I know why you advocated for flushing, in this video... that is for discriminating users who want to know for sure that all the ink in their printer is after-market, instead of waiting for cartridges that started with OEM ink to cycle through 2 or 3 refills. But if that matter isn't a concern, then it's perfectly fine to do the initial refill with OEM ink already in the cartridge. OK, that's a huge time saver. I'm not worried about flushing my own cartridges, but it's nice to know that I don't have to, only to avoid the time it'd take to do so. And I do have a second set of cartridges... before discovering Precision Colors and your channel, I had already bought a 2nd 8-pack of Canon ink. Luckily I didn't throw away any of the originals as I suspected I would be refilling them someday! So in the end, the only cartridge I expect to have to flush is one of the original Canon Yellow cartridges. That works for me! Thanks again!
