Then in 1971, they put on a fantastically reviewed stage show that prompted CBS to try a variety series. Cher, once critically shy, unwilling to sing without Sonny, and determined to stay in fringe vests and jeans, changed her mind and, happily, met Bob Mackie. Along with carefully chosen popcraft tunes chaired by Snuff Garrett, the path to superstardom was now unimpeded.
