If I close my eyes, I swear that's Sonny. Sonny died ...but his spirit and voice definitely came back in Chaz. I really think Chaz knew even before transitioning that he was meant to be a male...and now he's sensible ...and a chip off the block :)

I love how frank she is being! About the true feelings of having your little daughter becoming a man ... there is no hatred there, she clearly LOVES her Chaz with all her heart, but she is not afraid to admit that his transition was difficult for her. Of course it was!! I’m extremely pro-trans, I am a major ally, but pretending that it wouldn’t be difficult as a mother would just be lying.

She was a lousy mother who pretty much abandoned her kids Chaz was lucky as he had Sonny to take care of him. Soñny supported him while he was a lesbian activist and imagine would have supported his transition. But as Chaz says, I can't wait for her approval, so as always, I just did my own thing. But she is Cher. You HAVE TO love her. Elijah Blue Allman wasn't so lucky. He was shipped off to boarding school at age 7. No dad or mom for him. Was never close to his mother and lost closeness to Chaz decades ago. Cher became quite angry when Elijah was going to get married to a long-time girlfriend. As he said, Cher felt she was the only woman he could have in his life. But, like Chaz, he said he would make his own path as always. Did not have Cher at the wedding and she has nothing to do with him..unlike Chaz, he isn't a trinket for her to use. Also like Chaz he said, she is Cher, you HAVE TO LOVE HER. A couple of months ago she filed a lawsuit against Mary Bono over obtaining royalties from Sonny's copyright songs. She says she is entitled to 50% of the money for anything Sonny did while he was with her. On the flip side, when she uses Sonny's work or images to promote her career, she gives Mary Bono nothing. Interesting watching interviews with her now as she lies about pretty much everything and her ego says me, me, me. When you are older, and listen to her, you think that is not true. But you HAVE TO LOVE HER because she is 'Cher'.

It is awesome that Chaz received this award and Cher his mother was there. They were instrumental in my coming out in 1989 to my then wife. We went to her parents who were church goers and they had a magazine I think TIME was sitting on the table. I read it in secret of course but knew I had to be true and honest about myself. Well that was a long time ago and we are all happier.

I think Cher is such a great model for parents of LGBT kids, because she never pretends she doesn't struggle with his transition. She is a good example of what the process of acceptance looks like. I'm trans and my parents are not very good about it and I, of course, wish they could just be totally accepting and get pronouns right, etc, but I think it is important to have someone who clearly loves her child no matter what and is trying to adapt to a huge change but screws up. I don't expect my family to get on board quickly because it is a huge change to no longer have a daughter but a son and I think it's a bit unreasonable to expect that instant change. The change has to happen, but it's important for both the parents as well as the gay or trans child to realize that it's ok it it isn't easy, as long as you're making progress and never lose the base of love between you, you haven't failed.

My youngest sister is transgendered, I and most of the our family, struggle with the "pronouns", too. We appeared on the Sally Jesse Raphael show many years ago, there was a young transgendered man onstage with us, in full drag. His mother and sisters wouldn't get on the stage, but chose to sit in the front row and at every commercial would holler horrible things to her. Finally we got her up to sit next to her. She kept saying, "I gave birth to a boy!" I grabbed her hand and asked her to look me in the eye. When she finally did I told her, "You gave birth to a baby. That baby didn't know it was a boy or a girl. This is your child, love him, who he believes he is inside is his business. It quit being your business when they cut that umbilical cord."

There is absolutely nothing wrong with struggling. Thinking of a loved one as a "she" and then having to suddenly think of them as a "he" is not easy, and nobody ever said it would be. But it MUST be done, and we have to recognize that transgender people have always existed, and transitioning is not something that they're "doing to us"-this is just them trying to exist in the world. And we have to recognize the immense harm that can come from not recognizing someone's actual gender, even if we (unintentionally) make mistakes.
