well, after a half has disappeared, a half of the remaining half will disappear within one more half life. so, after +8 days, you have 1/2 of the initial iodine... and half of 1/2 is 1/4, so after 16 days, you have 1/4 of the original activity, and after 8 more days, you will have 1/8 of the original activity, and so on... At=A0*e^-(ln2/T1/2)*t where At= current activity (TBD!), A0= initial activity, e= euler constant, ln = natural logarithm, T1/2 = half life of the nuclide, t = passed time.

yeah, well, it's a warning threshold level that is exceeded. i can freely set my alarm threshold levels on my devices, though, so i guess it does not mean anything unless YOU know what YOU set and for WHAT REASON. for example, i could even set the alarm to go off at entirely normal background radiation.

well, good thing we were in the non-tourist places later on; in the future videos that do not belong to the currently upcoming deja-vu series, i will not have to worry about tourists at all, very handy. =)

we wanted to, but it didnt work out with getting access. the zone never gives up its secrets easily; it teases you with more each time. and though i got to access a lot of other great places instead, this means but one thing: i will have to go back to the zone soon.

@bionerd2312 жыл бұрын
well, they are building the new sarcophagus just next to the old reactor - you cannot film to that direction from this "tourist spot" in front of the reactor, militia is watching, and you will be shot in the back for turning your camera around to there. :P no idea why, as half of europe is building there (i even spoke to a german crane driver!), but yeah. building in progress, so lots of noise. though, even in pripyat, you can hear the distant hum of transformers, very interesting...
@bionerd2312 жыл бұрын
well, it's risky. the zone gives, the zone takes. know what you're doing and always be alert, and you may just get away with it. to me, the zone recognized me as a friend, apparently - it gave, it only gave, and so much, i nearly cried tears of joy in front of the gamma spectrometer...

(continued), and for others who read comments: I read that the iodine in salt is mainly a essential nutrient - often need for normal thyroid hormone production, and other things. Basically it's found in sea-food, and we just don't get enough - especially if you live inland and the price of seafood is high. The low amount of iodine in salt is usually not enough for radiation protection.

The tower on the right, the red and white one, is an exhaust chimney for reactors 1 and 2. Bionerd23 was standing to the right of the location where most pictures are taken, where the other tower is hidden behind the grey one. If you look at a picture of Chernobyl from Pripyat you'll see it clearly.
@trailkeeper12 жыл бұрын
Were both right.I read the "radioactive iodine" intake can be prevented by taking safe iodine since it will essentially block any more intake of iodine material including "radioactive iodine".I read, that theres all kinds of other radiation from Chernobyl type exposions, so I guess no one will be protected from Iodine safety pills alone.Need to keep distant, have shielding, and keep time in radiation area to a minimum, according to Wikipedia article.Iodine is often put in salt (if you use salt)

usually? you find a few MICROGRAMS (1/1000 gram) in a whole box of salt (which would cause severe health issues when ingested at once). OTC products with iodine supplements are in the micrograms range (10-50 micrograms). you need 50 miligrams 1/20 gram) or more for a thyroid protection dose of iodine! if you take, say, 1000 micrograms, you may cause your thyroid to malfunction AND you will not be protected, either! hence why i did a video on the dangers of iodine: watch?v=Silk2g8fS8Y

Very awesome camera & sights to record with it! Those catfish are pretty cool, though you're right they're not mutated, as catfish big enough to swallow people exist in the Amazon river, far from any unusual radioactivity. I wonder if you guys found another fuel fragment at that one real hot spot?

What was the noise in the background at 6:00? Some sort of ambient machinery noise, like a cooling system? How long will you be there or have you already returned? Wouldn't it be great to have one of those scintillator "Identifinders"? I'd like to be rich enough one of these days to buy one of those things. Though, if I'd have kept up with electronics, I feel like I should be able to BUILD one by now. Very excited to see new footage, btw. Keep it coming, "Dr. Livingston"! :) Don't get lost!

Its great to see the entrance to the area as well. When you were driving with all the other traffic up to that first gate, how far were you from the park with the bumper cars? or from the reactor? Can you send me a kmz file sometime from google earth if you trace your path ("export" option is enabled if you put down a thumbtack on a point). Don't suppose you had a GPS on you, did you? Or are they illegal to carry in there for some reason? Man, I gotta do this place with a GPS sometime.
@trailkeeper12 жыл бұрын
ok, that is the main formula for remaining levels or values, and (ln 2) is a constant of course. basically people would need a scientific calculator to solve these formulas. I have a similar one, you probably know, it just looks more friendly but still, scientific calculator is also needed (unless people like doing it by hand): At = Ao (0.50)^(t/T) t=time elapsed, T=period of half-life I might be wrong, so if I am, then let me know, I am trying to write an article about it.
@bionerd2312 жыл бұрын
i did a video on this. if you're interested, please review. watch?v=Silk2g8fS8Y iodine only makes sense if you're very close to a reactor who only just blew up (hours ago). otherwise, the potentially deadly (!!) effect of non-radioactive (stable) iodine far outweigh the benefits. please see my video for more details. ps: the potential dose of radio-iodine to the thyroid at close range to a nuclear reactor disaster can be ablative, meaning it can fully or at least largely destroy the organ.

@privatear200112 жыл бұрын
Yep, you should definitely map it out for us. I think you could even recreate the path that you took in Google Earth, overlay it, and send it as some kind of kmz file (GE's proprietary file). or just a screenshot in a video. If you had a GPS, there should be GPS linking software that would allow you to overlay it in GE, as well. Then you could save a detailed map of where you've been, and use it later to decide what you want to see next. :)
