Band of Brothers, Narcos, Altered Carbon, Stranger Things, Jack Ryan, Chernobyl and many others are better than GoT by quality. People got excited because "ooh deaths!" which turned cheap pretty fast. At some point I felt like the write was trying to be like an edgy teenager and tbh I felt like watching a mexican soap opera but with swords and fantasy. GoT is a good show, especially if you're a woman because they love soaps but it isn't anything special. Not at all.

Hungarians only got to know about the catastrophe because one Hungarian scientist decided to call several kindergartens and schools from a pay phone in order to keep children inside. After that gossip about the Chernobyl accident started to spread and some free radios and television figures decided to tell the truth. Because of them the government couldn’t keep quiet anymore... but yeah, after a week of the accident Hungarians were told that there are no radiation anymore, everything is safe, but we should still wash vegetables and fruits... So many people died, especially Hungarian trucks drivers, because they had to bring stuff to Chernobyl and they also evacuated a lot of people. They were told that it’s completely safe, and they would only get a tiny amount of radiation. All of them died before the age of 40, including my grandpa.

That intro by Stellan Skarsgard is the explanation I was looking for. People fail to realise that the Soviet Communism idea was a religious concept. It was infallible, it was based on sacred texts written by Marx and Lenin and could not be challenged or improved because it was already perfect. Any admission of a mistake carved away at this concept of infallibility. Just like god is never wrong, neither was the Soviet system. Anything else was blasphemy.

The Chernobyl incident and the Soviet bureaucracy had literally nothing to do with Marxism-Leninism. This is like blaming pedophilia in the Catholic Church on Christianity, or blaming the Challenger disaster on capitalism. This was merely the failure of authoritarianism, which was and is just as present in Western Europe and America. "Fail to realise..." Criticism of the USSR is the default stance in the West. You aren't smart or more educated for saying these things. Most laymen would tell you that Marxism is a form of Satanism.

I asked my uncle if he already watched the HBO serial, he was a nuclear physicist, he worked on the Chernobyl station before and after the catastrophe. He said that he don’t need to watch it, he can remember all the events in minutes. Also, he mentioned that his close friend died there, “his surname was Akimov”... Btw he blames Dyatlov, but he is surly claim that Bryuhanov was on leave during that day.

This show shows (however a bit over-dramatizes, though I cannot blame a DRAMA for doing that) the Eastern-European socialist mentality really. I was born in Eastern Europe and politics is still really like this. Everyone knows the truth but choose to lie and there is always the (accepted) truth and the (hidden) reality you have to navigate... Fascinating series even from that perspective. If you liked the series I really recommend watching the "Battle of Chernobyl", which is a documentary, and the best I've seen on the subject of the disaster.

What I love abotut the series is that whilst it, on surface level, can be viewed as a critique of Stalinism, in reality it is a critique of ALL kinds of government. I know this isn't exactly a deep level examination of the series, but it really cuts into the major issue with all forms of authoratarianism: control. No matter the ultimate goal with any form of government, controlling how the people think is never the solution and that was so perfectly portrayed through the performanace, atmosphere and dialogue. However people choose to interpret the message of the series, this is (to me) the 1984 of the 2010s, an example of a series that can be used by both sides as an "proof" of "their" ideology but is ultimately a piece against ALL forms of totalitariansim.

Even though Dyatlov was an insufferable schmuck of a human being, he did what he did under the impression that he had a fail-safe button. We might like to pinpoint the entire disaster on him and accuse him of being reckless when everything pointed towards a disaster, but still, he in his head had the confidence of AZ-5 saving the day in case of any adverse event. In my opinion, the onus of the tragedy lies 50-50 on him and the designers of RBMK reactors.
