That, and the fact that he doesn't make the new guy do the puppies. Instead he does it himself. He wanted to minimize the psychological blow on the kid as much as possible. What a horrible job to have to do, even though it was necessary.

In real life that soldier shot that army creep when the army creep threatened him he turned away and the soldier had 5 seconds to shoot him and he did to save that dog then him and the other soldier covered it up they told the officer that a sniper shot the army creep and they got away with it in the confusion during Chernobyl that army creep was shot by the soldier and the dog ran away great!

There is a misconception in a lot of comments here: The animals weren't shot because otherwise they would have suffered from radiation sickness. They were shot in order to prevent them spreading radioactive contamination. Keep in mind that acute radiation syndrome was only relevant to those being in really close proximity to the reactor. However, those animals where no where near it.

You have tons of radioactive dust blowing allover the place (not only). Last thing you need is carriers. Not to mention that all the people standing on the bridge of death (2 km away from the station) all died, so proximity isn't a criteria since you can't convince an animal to hose itself down. Cats don't make a noise and start doing huge back flips, probably 6 or so, nearly 2 meters high and then just drop down dead after the last one. You wouldn't actually believe it until you've seen it. Chubby surprise The point is . The Mosin Nagant fires a high powered (7.62x54r)cartridge similar to a U.S. 30-06. Certainly is overkill for putting down dogs. The AK-74 was the current Soviet issue rifle at the time . (Much smaller 5.45x39 cartridge). Not the AK-47. A few Makarov pistols would of got the job done. While yes the average bolt action is more accurate than the average semi auto the mosin was manufactured to a lower standard than the draganov. The barrel of the mosin was mass manufactured in the tens of millions by multiple armories and the sights are not adjustable in the field. Also the usual 54r round (silvertip) is not the one used (for snipers) in the draganov. Don't get me wrong my favorite gun is a mosin 91/30 manufactured 1943 at the tula arsenal. What stuck out to me was how little dialogue was given to Pavel (played by Barry Keoghan). It feels like he spoke no more than 5 sentences in the entire series, yet he's the central character in the pet liquidators plotline, and the supporting cast of his comrades each spoke more than he did. For some reason, the last part of this scene with all the dead animals in the truck and the mass grave was what really got to me. All those poor animals who didn't have the ability to understand why all the humans abruptly left them one day...and then another day, strangers came with guns and shot them. The hunters were doing what needed to be done, and they were doing it in order to prevent the animals from suffering as well to prevent more people from dying but...the animals couldn't understand this. They had relied on humans to take care of them but then the humans abandoned them -- and then when the humans came back and the animals might have thought they would have people to take care of them again, the humans killed them.

We get our pets cremated so we can keep them if we move (which sounds morbid, but I'm sure the new owners don't want to dig up animal bones). Making the incident straight up terrifying, seeing the children kick the radioactive dust like snow, liquidation of animals and nuclear waste, the whole stark atmosphere of a populated place suddenly being empty, because of something you can't see. I know that there's a lot of historical inaccuracies in this show, the director himself has said the show is not a documentary and parts of the story were intentionally dramatized for the sake of the show. If this is true. I kinda pity those dogs who had to be killed. It feels wrong but in a radiated place it hurts more to do whats right.

The subtle detail at the end when the guy sings the song of the volga boatmen, it enhances so much the heavy load of the work they have to do

the scene with the puppies and the scene with lyudmilla at the ending sitting in shock after her baby died. episode 4 is the saddest and dark episode of the series.

The saddest story I heard told by some of that squad is that when they were burying the dogs one of puppies appeared to be alive and tried to crawl back from the pit and they didn’t have ammo left to put him down so they just swamped him as well. :(

I like how he explains to him that's there no shame in it. But also let's him know that he had it all along in him. Even talks about his first time and how he went through. So he knows what that young kid is feeling like. 3:04 to 4:00

This scene is much more true to life than the supposed "Cull"... There was little that came from Chernobyl of positive benefit, but this at least shows that there was still humanity weaved within...

Love the little detail of them using old surplus Nagants for non-war and non-guard duty.

I love that the dude with the black hair is the same actor as Leo from A Way Out. That voice and that nose is very recognizable haha

Great series, definitely a tough scene to watch if your a dog lover. Understood why they had to do it, hurt the heart to watch. Masterfully done.

But if you think about that can you imagine how hard it was for that kid for the rest of his life, can you imagine having to live with that for the rest of your life , knowing that you killed man's best friend?

This series didn't really sugarcoat anything or pull any punches. It's brutal and hard to watch and comprehend, but it was the reality of the thing

This was one of my favorite scenes. Just imagine your job being to shoot pets. Loved how the show focused a bit on this aspect of Chernobyl, the part that many overlook.
