The most important plugin for me for mastering is a referencing plugin like Metric A/B.

It really is that simple. I like to use very simple plugins for the mastering chain because they don't color the sound like some of the expensive ones do

I just saw a vid from apmastering about clippers. When your face changed when the clipper topic started, I understood 😂 Great vid Scott, you can be sure I'll throw this to people asking me about this topic.

Interesting that you have the clipper before the "glue" compressor, any particular thoughts behind that workflow? Clipper before limiter is quite often but never saw this before .
@MagnetarCollapse
@MagnetarCollapse 2 ай бұрын
Most likely helps the compressor do it's job easier because it won't have to deal with huge spikes. Compressor if not set to limit will anyway allow those spikes through.
@ChernobylAudio666

Yes, transient control. The clipper just makes the entire waveform more consistent and then the compressor doesn't have to work as hard. I can also add some gain and fatten up the mix going into the compressor.

@@ChernobylAudio666 same reason why would someone put it before the limiter , I will try my clipper in that position too on my next mix see how it sounds

Smooths out the signal so you hear the compressor working less probably

Is there a recomondation you have for smoothing out the distortion from clipping? I like the way it sounds when you clip the bus by overdriving it. But somtimes the crackle can be too much

Apparently iron Maiden haven't even bothered mastering their last bunch of records. Steve Harris likes the sound of the board mix and that's what they print.

Interesting, I've always learned to put the Clipper right before the Limiter. What's tbe initial difference with that approach?
@DanSaillant
@DanSaillant 2 ай бұрын
There’s nothing inherently wrong with going compressor -> clipper -> limiter, but if you do it like that, you’ll be clipping a signal that doesn’t have as many dramatic transient peaks. Since the loudest parts of the mix will be turned down by the compressor. If you clip first, you’re decreasing the volume of just those peaks and adding some subtle distortion. The compressor would therefore end up affecting more of the overall mix since the peaks aren’t as dramatic.
@DerSilvano
@DerSilvano 2 ай бұрын
@@DanSaillant thanks for the answer, sounds super insightful. Would the compressor cause the distortion (if you go that far with clipping) to go out of hand or wouldn't that even matter?
@ChernobylAudio666
@ChernobylAudio666 2 ай бұрын
Already wouldn't matter because the mix would sound terrible with too much clipping/distortion, so ideally you wouldn't use that much before going into the compressor \m/

Quick question, I wanted to download and experiment with the plugins you recommended but it doesn't seem like GClip is compatible with my version of Logic. It just doesn't show up at all in my Plug-In manager and I've been trying to troubleshoot and it sounds like this is a common problem without a resolution... Do you have any suggestions for another similar plugin?

They have older versions on their website that are compatible with intel. You'll also have to do xatrr command to remove them from quarantine that apple puts unsigned stuff in.

Interesting chain. The latest video I just posted has a master chain that was probably 3-4 times more complicated than what you just showed. I'm not sure if that is a good or bad thing ha ha
@ChernobylAudio666
@ChernobylAudio666 2 ай бұрын
It can get complicated, but each plugin should have a purpose, it's when you put the chain together and you look at every part of it and can explicitly state WHY that plugin is there, then I think that's fine!
