I graduated high school in 2001 and I had SO many friends do the "hey, let’s get married before you’re deployed so I can use your insurance" thing. Honestly, it’s so hard getting on your feet when you’re poor and don’t have health insurance, that I don’t blame any of them. And I’ve also known so, so, SO many people that were taken advantage of and lied to by military recruiters. They really will say anything and take advantage of anything going on in your life to get you to sign up. Many of my friends and classmates were absolutely promised that they would remain stateside and not be deployed. Instead, once they were in the Army or Navy they were deployed to combat zones multiple times. Almost all of them came back with PTSD (especially the folks that joined the Army), and most of them developed substance abuse issues because the VA couldn’t/wouldn’t help them. It’s maddening and infuriating.

@@minwellitsanicknamebegrate2531 I believe it. I know they always went after the guys in high school harder than us girls. For me, they asked if I’d be joining and I said I have asthma so I can’t. They’d try to say "well, you might be able to..." and I’d just say "well, the only thing I’d want to do is fly, but I can’t see a thing without my glasses, so I doubt the Air Force is going to accept that" and they’d just laugh and go on to the next person. The guys though, yikes. I had friends that said they couldn’t join because of asthma, epilepsy, type 1 diabetes or other diseases/disabilities and the recruiters would scoff at them, insult them, call them pussies, accuse them of lying just because they’re "too chicken shit" to join up "like a real man". Some of them would get in their faces and scream at them. These were men yelling at teenage boys. And it didn’t just happen in high school, we had recruiters come to our middle school every year to get us hyped about joining the Navy or Air Force when we turned 18. They’d even tell us “you don’t even need to graduate high school! If you turn 18 before then, you can drop out, get your GED, and join the service! As if it was a good option. Hook ‘em while they’re young. But for so many of my friends and family, the military was their only hope of attending college or a trade school. They had to risk their lives and their mental health just to have the chance to get a job that pays slightly better than minimum wage in the future. It’s a shitty system. It feeds off people that are desperate.

Y e a h. My mom is a vet, and now she works for the VA. Part of the recruiting strategy is literally to prey on people's vulnerabilities. Most of her patients are people who had preexisting issues that should have been dealt with but we ignored and then perpetuated by service. People inside and outside of the military look at former service members who are struggling, with addiction or mental health or anything messy, as failures or fuck ups or deranged, instead of people who were actively traumatized and abandoned

@@autumn7809 That 100% describes both my brothers. Both suffered from mental health and addiction issues before entering the military. Watching people die, trying not to die themselves, trauma, and the worst thing prevalent in the military happening to one of them did not help their situations. Not to mention, the physical injuries one now has in addition to mental health issues. The VA was so overbooked and understaffed that they received little to no help. @Jam Drew I mean, Homecoming is easily my second favorite spiderman movie and I legit think it’s very good. But the director clearly doesn’t have a hook on the character as much as he should. He made spider-man a bit waaaay too “teenage girls idol”. You know? Like, ofc Tom Holland is a charismatic good looking dude, but this way of directing has made him look so shallow and a One Trick Pony. So much so that every movie post Marvel of his has been the complete opposite. He is clearly self aware on how much his image as an actor was molded by the Marvel flicks. Not to mention, when we have actors such a Taika Waititi, the Russo Brothers ,James Gunn and John Favreau , all that have a very interesting take on characters and cinematography, Jon Watts just feels so underwhelming. We’re just not on that mediocre phase of Marvel( maybe phase 2). The latest movies have mostly been flood with energy and some creative takes and then there is Watts doing the most generic shit possible
@danielz-v4083

@Jam Drew also, while I loved FFH when I first watched it, I came to realize that I only did so because it was a fun classic marvel movie after the more “serious” endgame and Infinity war. Upon second and third viewing, I really believe FFH is so mediocre. Legit one of the dumbest ideas for a Spider-man possible. It’s a cute movie but overall it’s kinda “meh” and completely non connected with the character (unlike Homecoming). ALSO, Idk WHY but Watts thought it was a good idea to literally do the exact same arc that was already done in Civil War-Homecoming. If you take your time you realize every character event in peter is so irrelevant and unnecessary. Even the Spider sense feels dumb besides the literal last action scene

As an Arab, watching movies like these is both fascinating and disturbing. We are constantly led to sympathize with a person who literally volunteered to aid in the war that took a million lives, created 4 million refugees and left Fallujah more radioactive than Hiroshima, for *absolutely no reason*. He felt like it. He broke up and didn't know what to do. That's it. That's why the "cherries" of the America came and murdered all those people. They're the reason my friend lost his home, why half his neighbourhood died violently, why his mother got cancer from exposure to the remnants of chemical weapons. All these movies do is leave me with a sense of outrage and emptiness, but not for the reasons the film makers want. The ridiculousness, the sheer absurdity of it, the horror of realizing that's why these people come here..it's mind numbing. and at the end of the day what do you get? Yet an other "killing your people made our soldiers sad" tale. Soldiers suffering PTSD is perhaps the only semblance of karmic justice Iraq or Afghanistan or whichever region in Africa gets drone striked will ever get. True justice will never be served. And once again, "killing your people made our soldiers sad" is the only story hollywood dares to make.

It’s not karmic justice at all… If Bush and Cheney, and every American politician who voted for the war somehow got PTSD from it, that would be karmic justice. Punishing the people who were fed propaganda and exploited and sent to kill and die isn’t justice, unless they’re the specific people who committed war crimes themselves. The politicians who ordered and voted for the war should be in prison after an international tribunal, that would be justice.

"Have you ever been joined the military after getting dumped on bad?" So, when I was at university, I had some pretty bad neurological issues. I'd periodically go limp, be utterly unable to control my body, but my nerves would sporadically fire off, causing my arms and legs to twitch. Occasionally, I'd stop breathing. Everyone thought i was going to die before I turned 21 (that part of this story ends well: I'm now 34, totally cured, and as of 2020, 100% off all anti-seizure medication). Enter Shaina. Shaina is a girl who I thought had a crush on me. She sent me pretty unambiguous hints. (like saying "Someday, I'm going to marry you." Look, I was young and stupid) One day, I ask her out to a play. She says "Yes, but only if we do a group thing with my roommate. Oh, can you find her a date? Maybe your friend Carlos from your frat?" Oh, sure. I guess group dates are a thing. I ask Carlos, he agrees, because he knows her roommate and figures we'll all have a good time. I buy our tickets. Day before the Big Date, she texts me "My brother is going to be in town that day! I never get to see him. Can he come on the date, too? Also, he's in high school, so can you buy his ticket? And his date's ticket?" Apparently, his date is another girl from her sorority that she roped into this. I was getting a bit peeved. A smarter man would have just called it off. Carlos even suggests I call it off. I don't, and the date goes forward. We go out for gelato beforehand. All six of us. I wind up buying ice cream for four, because remember: her brother is broke (and by the end of the night, so am I). We get to the theater, and I hand her brother and his dates their tickets. Obviously they couldn't sit with us, because they were a last-minute purchase, and I bought the other four tickets at the same time. Shaina - God bless her - says "Oh, if that's the case, I'll sit with my brother so he doesn't feel lonely." So, I wind up with his date - whose name I don't even remember. Carlos, his date, and my "new" date all give me this look of deep, deep pity. I find out years later that this was all a wildly circuitous plan where Shaina had leveraged MY disease as a chance to show Carlos how great she was, by going out with the sick kid, so that he'd actually be interested in HER. So yes. I have been dumped so bad, I tried to go to the military.

But doesn't use a single dime from her own money, help she makes the sick kid pay for everything! But I guess that's par for the course for those types they want to have their cake and eat it too and you're always wondering if they're the ones who are sick in the mind or they're just that narcissistic when they don't see what they did as wrong in any fashion. I hope you're doing well just hearing about chicks like that reminds me of the chick who screwed my brother over recently, I have never ever laughed at someone who had cancer relapsing when look like it was gone then I did for her after what she did to my brother. In the middle of it relapsing after he helped her go through all that s*** she put them in massive d e b t, humiliated him put them into a deep dark hole of depression that he almost drank himself to death and still has a problem with drinking and just made him f****** annoying to deal with for the rest of the family before a good Wild after everything he did for her she cheated on his ass and then robbed them when he caught her with the guy he didn't catch them in bed but he caught them as they were finishing up and about to leave and got suspicious but he was too slow in acting first they had a joint bank account so is she took all the money and fled to our parents who didn't like him because well he was black she was Puerto Rican and their the typical old class we want our daughter dating her own kind! Me and my brother are always at each other's throats but I care for my little brother and someone like that the f****** him over well let's just say she tipped her hat prior before. In the past me and her were doing a job when she was first dating my little brother and is she had to do some extra stuff so she asked me to take on her shift she would give me the money at a later date. Every time I ask once it got to that later date she kept making excuses after excuses before finally calling me a harasser I only asked her if she had the money once per month once the. She was supposed to pay me back past! Before she lied to my brother and told him I was harassing her and he got aggressive towards me. At that point I realized she was a fake and well I didn't start any trouble I let it go but the moment he talked to me about her possibly cheating that moment I mention that's when I told him he needs to get out but he was too slow because he kept making excuses for her until it was too late! I was happy to know her cancer came back after he helped her go through all that s*** just for her to cheat on him and treat him like that. I viewed it as karma biting her in the ass she's okay and it went away again but damn did it take its toll on her appearance and health! I don't wish death because I view that as the ultimate Karma Houdini! It's even more hilarious because even her family who are quick to help her with my little brother quickly kicked her to the curb and pretend she doesn't exist the money she stole from my brother she used as an additional bribed to them so when that ran out well it did not go well for her! I just dislike those type of people seriously the thing that makes me hate the most is when they have the nerve to act like they did nothing wrong anyone could look at the choices they made and see that was f***** up and wrong but I guess that's what it means to be an unrepentant narcissist I suppose

At this point I feel like I'm the only one who enjoyed this movie. Maybe because I've never seen Russo's previous works and I didn't have any bias while diving into the movie, or maybe because I've seen much much worse films, but I genuinely enjoyed it. It's sad to see how criticised it is knowing how proud Russos and Tom are of this movie (not to say people don't have the right to dislike it, they totally do). At least everyone agrees that Tom's and Ciara's acting were really good.

Addicts usually stick together as a former addict I think it’s more realistic. I never saw couples with only one being the user, it’s almost impossible as it’s extremely difficult to hide and so the saying is true ‘birds of feather flock together’ For me this seemed to portray addicts pretty accurately usually one has to move away completely disappear, die of overdose, go to jail and even then they reunite just like the movie. I didn’t read the book but going by the short description of the movie it seemed believe able it certainly took me back to my using days! Great review though now I’ll have to go and watch. I thought it was so interesting that James Lightfoot, who was so adamantly against his friends joining the military because they'd come back messed up like his brother, himself gets hurt on his civilian job and ends up in the same situation as Cherry and Emily. That felt like an indictment of the medical industry that over-medicates rather than tries to help patients and was easily the thing that struck me the hardest. I also thought it was interesting that most of what Cherry saw in his nightmares were people bleeding from bullet wounds rather than his friends that blew up in the humvee, because it suggests he saw way more horrors than we the audience saw during his time in the military. I think the movie is better than a lot of people are suggesting, but then again I've always been a rather easy-to-please moviegoer. Thanks for another great video, Amanda!

Soldiers and vets trying to seek help and “files getting moved along” and doctors doing the bare minimum to help is the story of the last 5 years of my life. The last 3 years of my life have been wasted because no one told me a fitness for duty had been done using my medical records determining I wasn’t fit for duty (I was initially told my only option was to chapter out because I couldn’t pass a pt test anymore, but then the chapter paperwork was stalled when said fitness for duty found me unfit and no one ever told me). I thought I was waiting to chapter out of the military for over a year (and couldn’t be promoted) while my injuries got progressively worse and my Primary Care didn’t really help in any way more than prescribing mild painkillers and putting me on profile for a week. I had to practically beg him to see the physical therapist. I was told that I could potentially qualify for the med board process about a year ago, but needed to do a fitness for duty assessment with my PC. Then when I scheduled the fitness for duty, giving them a request memo from my company commander stating what type of appointment I needed, they scheduled me for a completely different type of appointment. When I explained that I was there to do a fitness for duty they left me alone in the exam room for an hour trying to figure out what went wrong, then told me I couldn’t do the assessment because there wasn’t enough time to do it in my 20 minute allotment which they wasted looking for the memo, and that I hadn’t had a permanent profile, because he wouldn’t put me on profile for more than a week, so he would have to basically do a bunch of appointments assessing all my injuries one at a time exhausting all options of health care before they could determine that I should be put on a “permanent” profile so I could get the fitness for duty so I could start the med board process. Then covid got worse and all my appointments got canceled cause of lockdown and months went by where my mental health deteriorated significantly where I had to basically beg behavior health to be seen by a doctor to discuss potentially needing to go on antidepressants cause I was having intrusive and suicidal thoughts. I wasn’t sleeping, my apartment is still a mess, I could barely get out of bed except to go to work, nothing brought me joy, I was in pain, I was so stressed from work because we were grossly understaffed and a toxic contractor was never at work and manipulating everyone around her and the other contractor that did work was pregnant and I tried to minimize her stress by taking on more work. I had multiple breakdowns and panic attacks both at home and at work, I developed an ulcer, I was irritable and always lost my temper. The entire time not knowing that a fitness for duty assessment had been done 2 and a half years prior and some high level person on some board didn’t do anything about it to let me or my commander know despite us constantly asking what was going on with my situation. Finally, last September I found all this out and am waiting for the Physical Evaluation Board to make their assessment from the Medical Evaluation Board’s findings, but essentially if my doctor had done their job 5 years ago when I was initially injured and determined that I was disabled to the point where I wasn’t fit for duty and instead gave me a waiver without my knowledge saying I was ok to serve despite the injuries, so that when I couldn’t pass a pt test because of the pain I was in, the last 5 years of my life would have been very different. I might not be so depressed and anxious that I need antidepressants and sleep pills, I could have been with my family during this pandemic instead of being isolated and alone dealing with a toxic situation on my own thinking about suicide. I’m just glad that I’m finally almost out of this whole fucked up situation.

Contact your local VA rep!! There are people who volunteer to assist members through the VA process. Request that the patient advocate accompany you to all medical appoints at your MTF because of what happened (or if you can afford it a lawyer, they cannot deny you a chaperone). Inform your command that you will be opening an investigation (dont give a fuck about what they think or say) and go to the IG and open a case, reprisal for going to the IG is not tolerated. Then go to records in the clinic and request a copy of your entire medical history you are entitled to it, they can not say no. Let me repeat Get Your Records Now! Otherwise they'll just disappear as soon as your out. You want those records for your IDES when you get evaluated by the VA, before you do make sure they're correct and every diagnosis is listed. Anything not listed on your diagnosis pg needs to be added. Buddy letters also can support your claims as an accepted document by the VA. There's a lot more to it but that's a start. Seriously though contact your local va rep office!!! (there should be one on your base) talk to other vets you know about the process. Google search. Get the IG and Patient advocate involved and you'll be amazed how quicklythr drs start actually doing stuff.

You definitely nailed it, both too long and too short. But in that way I actually enjoyed the dope life section taking up so much time. It was my favorite section, especially seeing such a drastic acting departure for Tom Holland.

This movie deserved to be a 6/7 episode mini series. There is so much content here, so many important reflections that need more time to be fully developed... I can’t believe they tried to squeeze so much into 2h30mins, it feels devoid of any real depth.

As someone who was in the Army although never combat deployed, I liked a lot of points you were making. I enjoyed how you addressed the abusive recruiting tactics. The military frowns on people who have a history of depression and self harm, and my recruiter literally helped me come up with lies for why I had scars to tell at MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station). I also like how you worded that phrase people who just wanted to commit violence and never should have been allowed to join the military. I knew guys who said we should turn the Middle East into a parking lot and regularly used the phrase sand n****rs. These guys freaked me the hell out. I joined for lack of better a idea of what to do with myself after a tramatic experience. I wasn't thrilled with the idea of being forced to kill anyone, which is why I chose to be a medic. These people did and do exist, and as a country the US should be terrified for the populations they unleash these socio and psychopaths upon.

So, former medic here, shock can take a long time to set in. Guts spilling out is actually kind of the standard, the human body is a pressurized sack of mushy organs and flowing liquids, given the opportunity for expansion that pressure will relieve itself, which is what makes stomach wounds so bad.

I agree with Stuckmann's review. Russos' stylistic choices were distracting and self indulgent, especially the slow mo scenes with classical music. It was also very long and very depressing. I had more fun watching Gaspar Noe's Climax than this.

Man. This just makes me think about how one of my former roommates was trying to join the military because he didn't know what else to do after college (he's also pretty conservative) and my other former roommate, his girlfriend, didn't want to be sitting around waiting for him and also wasn't sure what to do after college so _she_ decided to join the army despite being fairly liberal. The guy was unable to get in due to past conditions his mom exaggerated or straight up made up and his girlfriend's now going to basic in a couple of months while he tries to get into the CIA so he's not just an army wife 🤦

Man I still remember my younger brother who wanted so badly to become a Marine! he devoted a large amount of his time bodybuilding and trying to pass the tests the very moment he was legally old enough to enlist! As much as I hate his ex-girlfriend for all this should she put him through but she did in my service from what I see by being a huge distraction that he was forced to give that up. I have nothing bad to say to our servicemen and women! B******* Brock Racine f*** it in all its forms no matter where it is military government they seem to exist the try to organize everything... And cover s*** up to avoid having to fully commit to doing their job for us poor Folk who they pull into that s*** what are its the banks wanted to use other people's money so they can make themselves richer and if that failed not suffer any consequences themselves it'll just be the poor folk who had their money used without their permission or were tricked into giving their permission! Or this s*** with the veterans I mean we already saw an example of how veterans will be treated moving forward right around after the Vietnam War! Remember when veterans were treated as f****** precious... But I'm sure the cracks in the floor we're already in place before the Vietnam War they just weren't noticeable until that point and start to become more and more noticeable as the corruption has left the festering. Because you know what they say when you have an infection you don't ignore it you deal with it right there and then if you ignored it will eventually Fester grow and become worse and very very noticeable! Hope the ones you're mentioning are doing well :-)

As someone who’s been through the addiction rodeo I can say this is actually a pretty accurate depiction of what it’s like.
