What about petrified wood? Can that turn to Jasper? I have found pieces that I cannot tell if they are ancient petrified wood that has been rolled and tumbled over the millennia or if it is Jasper inside.

In our area you can find petrified wood with jasper in it, but unlike agate or calcite the jasper replaces the wood so that part of it wont look much like wood anymore.

I see Flint as well as chert, The only difference in Flint and chert, is where it's created. Flint is formed in chalk walls mostly. Chert is formed in limestone. It can be created anywhere. So much more common. Chert, jasper, Flint. All the same thing. Sio2. Silica.

What about chert in relation to seam agates? I have a lot of examples of pieces that are either river washed chert or seam agates.

I have not found any seam agates in this area, I do find a lot of washed chert and agates. I will post a small video on the colors of chert I have found here and polished.

Thanks for your observations and your specimen displays! I am finding quite a few chert nodules in my ravines and creeks, as well as jaspers, and I can usually detect the differences (as you have described). Most of my jasper finds are red in color, although I do have some yellow examples. Many of my chert "tiles", or nodule cuts, can include deeper red and yellow hues as well, but the rind around the nodule or tile really identifies those stones as chert. I delight in finding banded cherts, and I often send pix of those discoveries to my agate-addicted friends in Wisconsin and Minnesota, explaining that they are "rare Indiana agates"! I haven't had much success fooling anybody!

Banded chert is rare, like finding a banded agate instead of plain or mossy ones. We have some purple chert in our area but it is harder to find. I will post a small video of chert that I have polished from our area.

Well I think the confusion comes from the fact that Chert is a silica (Chalcedony). Where as jasper is an aggregate of microgranular quartz and/or Chalcedony.. and other minerals. You are correct they are not the same.. But to the average guy just rocking it.. they may seem the same.. they don't to me but I have friends that think they are.. or were until I explained the difference.. Well done!

Yes they are different, around here the chert has a granular texture where as the jasper is smooth. In some other areas they may look more similar.

Chert = jasper = flint = chalcedony = cryptocrystalline SiO2. They come in many different grades and colours. You know not of what you speak. 😢

but in your own video you're claiming flint and chert are the same thing. you ought to dig a little deeper before throwing stones at glass houses.
