Its really not as bad as it looks. I didn't even know it was a big deal until I found a tik tok after I had been over it. Unless you're an idiot, you can't go off the road. I did notice it didn't have real guard rails and called my daughter to say that but otherwise it was just normal driving. The hype is what makes it scary, not the actual bridge.

When my parents and I moved from New Jersey to Georgia in 1978, we'd still come back up to visit relatives sometimes, and my dad would always take the scenic route and go across this. We'd stop at the restaurant every time. Great memories. I don't go up there nearly as much, but when I do, it's always through the Chesapeake Bay bridge -tunnel.

Went through/on that somewhere around 1966 in a 1957 Oldsmobile coupe. My mother was driving. We were taking my brother back to either Newport News or Norfolk. I was around 12 or 13. Best part of that trip was that we got to tour his ship, the USS Enterprise.......aircraft carrier. AMAZING! He never told my mother that we were driving under water and that the Enterprise would actually sail over that tunnel till after we were back home. To me, the tunnel is much less frightning than the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, even though I HATE tunnels. Thanks for the vid.

Glad I saw this or I was going to have to rearrange my whole route. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it!

Can't tell you how much I appreciate it. I was really stressing over it, I kept thinking when I saw the aerial view, I'm going to go in that? Then I realized the Holland tunnel is also one way and also a mile though I believe Chesapeake has two tunnels? The bridge looks absolutely beautiful. Long overdue to relocate to Florida so I'm crossing every t in dotting every i as I'm traveling alone with three fur children. Thanka again.

Thanks for the video. You had a great weather day to cross. My first trip was June 1972 across the CBBT. Was only one lane each way back then. My Godfather and his girlfriend took them with me. I got out of school 2 weeks early as my Mom and Dad had to prove this would be an educational trip for me. Which it was, as we did Williamsburg, Monticello, Yorktown, etc. Plus the Blue Ridge Mountains and Luray Caverns just to name a few places we visited. It was great as an 11 year old to experience all of this. I took my wife across in 2016 as she had grown up in Illinois her entire life. She was impressed. Fortunately the restaurant and overlook points were all open. I took her to Langley AFB for their 100 year air show celebration. Disappointing to hear the restaurant won't be back. Last trip was Oct to Williamsburg in 2020. I did the CBBT vs I-95 to get to Williamsburg. I don't mind paying the extra money for the scenery. Needless to say Williamsburg was a ghost town due to COVID-19. Which was great for us. Safe journeys.

That sounds like my situation except about 25 years earlier. I took my wife and step daughter across in the early 90's. My wife grew up in northern Illinois, so I was showing them around. We also ate at the restaurant.

@@ReelJayB It was a medium sized passenger and car ferry. The crossing took about one hour. Passengers left their cars and could stroll around a promenade deck. There was a snack bar. I have had a recurring nightmare since I was a child, so about 25+ years, about riding on a bridge that suddenly disappeared into the water and we were supposed to drive through the water to come up on the other side. For 2.5 decades I had this dream that felt so real I was sure I’d been there but could never place it. I began to think maybe it was a past life experience. Over the weekend I went to see my dad for his birthday. We were both up at 3 AM and couldn’t sleep. I was telling him about this dream I’ve had ever since I was little. He then informed me we went over/through the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel on a vacation to Nags Head NC when I was five. I looked at an aerial photo and instantly knew this was it. 5 year old me thought we had to drive straight through the water. I knew that we had been over bridges and through tunnels on this trip, but my mind brain never integrated that the tunnel was in the middle of the bridge. I was somewhat emotional to have this mystery solved.
@ReelJayB10 ай бұрын
It's a crazy tunnel for sure! Glad thr mystery was finally solved!! I never looked at it from a younger kid perspective, but it was definitely make sense because of all the tunnels and bridges.

I am impressed with the fact that the tunnels are bright and clean even though they are 60 years old. Meanwhile, most of the tunnels on the PA turnpike look like crap even though the 2nd tubes are about the same age. They did reline Tuscorora Mountain recently it's much better. Other tunnels in Pittsburgh don't look as nice but we did get relined Armstrong tunnel.
