Well done. I made a set for my daughter a few years ago and decided the pieces were a little lightweight, so I drilled a hole in the bottom and glued in a lead fishing weight and then put felt over the bottom. Worked like a charm and doesn't add too much cost.

The thing to note about this, is that it is the setup that takes all the time, so it would be very efficient use of time to make multiple sets of these at once... make 5 or 10 sets of the pieces, even using different woods... Practice/tune the cuts on pine, before doing the hardwood, even the good pine pieces could be marketable, if at a lower price point. For those so inclined, the pine pieces could even be used to practice chisel or dremel work to make a variation

If you’ll glue up your oak and walnut side by side (8 pieces) like a cutting board, then you can turn it 90 degrees to the table saw blade and cut 8 squares at a time without having to glue each one. Then alternate for your pattern and glue back up for a chess board.
@nikkafrog10 ай бұрын
I was going to come and comment that. Any time you can cane a pattern, makes time go a lot quicker when making. I used to do polymer clay so i have that background to help. Canes for the win.

@@Bearded-Viking-WoodWorksactually Barry’s way would save you a ton of time and eliminate or reduce the chances of any issues. You basically made an end grain cutting board and glued it to plywood. While your way does work if you made it like a traditional end grain board I think you would find it so much quicker. But it does look good.

(10:06) “oh that hurt my feelings” Haha that hurt my mind too 😂 Would it hurt less if I told you could have glued your clamping piece (if the size was right) that you used on top, instead of gluing the bottom? I mean, they were already in a fixed position before you took them little pieces off. Anyway, it got done and it looks amazing! Didn’t actually expect you’d make the full game, but that made just an even better end result. Speaking of end result, checkmate! 😉
