Thank you for showing and discussing the different boards. Still it makes it difficult to choose one. I think i have to look at it again and first formulate my own specification that i certainly want to have as a function the board provides. It gave me a good insight of the working and possibilities. Thank you for the comprehensive compilation. I myself own the great chess computer Chess Classics Element with the Supremeboard 55. These boards, both DGT with DGT Pi and the chess computers from Millennium, are best for home use. However, these boards are only best suited for classic chess. If you want to play bullet or blitz, it is better on the computer or in the app, since you also have to move the opponent's pieces. And for playing alone at home, the Millennium is the better choice. But that's all a matter of taste.

Very interesting. I have a Millennium King Performance and Chesslink. In the future I want a tournament sized wooden eboard with weighted pieces of good quality. I have seen some reviews on Chessnut Pro, but I have some doubts about the quality of the pieces and they are not weighted either. I think the Millennium Tournament Supreme 55 is the most promising quality board, with weighted Staunton style pieces. Chess for Android is great. I have some suggestions on features. 1. A button for draw and resign. 2. ELO levels, and much weaker settings. 1 sec time on a Samsung S23 Ultra is easy search depth 15-16, way to strong to play against. I think we are in a new age of computing power. In fact my new desktop computer with i7 14 cores and RTX 4070, most of the time draws at my S23 Ultra when played against each other.

Excellent video ! It's difficult to have an overview of the different borads avalable on the market and their caracteristics . So I appreciate the information. I would suggest to compare more deeply the functionalities. For me I have difficulties to understand what comes from the board itself and what comes from the software. Are there limitations due to the boards management (except the connections) and others from the API ? I try for instance to select the boards which allow the possibility to get the PGNs when playing OTB (player against player) to replay the games and analyze them. And this function seems difficult to get using a phone via bluetooth. Is this functionnality depending from the boards itself or the software ? And if so which are the boards and software that authorize that. These informations are difficult to get !! thanks anyway for this excellent video 🙂

Really epic video! You have all the boards to adapt your chess application? I have a serial DGT board and already adapted my own chess software to it. I also have a Chess Genius Exclusive, but no ChessLink. Maybe I should get one. How hard was it to get the API description for the Millenium board? Or do you get some middleware or library only?

No middleware! My app connects to all eboard using my own "clean room" implementation in Chess for Android! And yes, all eboard vendors shared their protocol with me in doc form to enable me to write this implementation.

An improvement would have been to mention batteries. For example are they internal rechargeable, or you put batteries in, or you have to supply a battery pack like with the Millenium computers. I can understand not mentioning price though, that's easy for people to look up, and may vary by location, not to mention sales. Chesshouse has some stellar black friday deals, but that ship has sailed. I think you mostly covered whether they could be played standalone.

each electronic Chess board have different i/o api for there is a standard? also i recommend you to try xiangqi or Chinese Chess

All vendors have their own protocol. Even for one vendor, some boards have different protocols. There is no standard (yet?!).

I have the last version of chess or Android installed, but i can not see the time game in DGT Clock. I switch on the clock timmer in options, but in the clock only show the piece move, never the time, why? Maybe my Android version ot any special permission? Thanks!

„You won’t notice it has only piece position“ I don’t believe that this is fully the case, it is a slight inconvenience because when you take a piece, you have to do it in a certain way so it detects it, and also the pawn promotions are more difficult. But I don’t know if this is actually a real world problem since I don’t own one.

That really depends on the board. For most protocols, I was able to let Chess for Android detect captures and promotions in a very flexible way, where the order of placement does not matter.

yes...all most interesting but do these chess sets handle chess 960 [Fischer Random ] games including the quirky castling rules?! Chess 960 is becoming very popular now especially since top players are giving it a go! Better still, if a chess set can handle Chess 960 games and analysis without recourse to the Internet!

The electronic boards that basically just relay a move to the app are ridiculous (for the price.) You could just use an ordinary 10$ board and tap your move into a phone. No need to spend $300 on a board, connect it to a device, charge it, etc, just to play remote chess. All the board does is just send a move to the app, and that's it.

I am not sure why you made the comment. Clearly, you are not interested in such boards, but a lot of other people are. I for one like to focus on the chess without having to move back and forth with an app. But to each their own.
