The Colorado Gambit is an aggressive line in the Nimzowitsch Defence. Black looks to weaken his king side pawn structure in exchange for some deadly attacks against white.
White must play carefully as there are many traps and dangerous lines that black can play.

Guys, in the Colorado gambit, pawns can move backwards.

+Ravtej Singh On certain really aggressive lines, your pawns can move backwards to revert to a more defensive position. It almost always catches your opponent off guard.

Yes! I got introduced to it because of GJ! I'm quite surprised the Colorado Gambit isn't that much popular compared to the other openings! That makes LOTS of opponents unprepared if it is used against them.

I have played this gambit before. It's not very promising but it does give you a reasonable chance to pull off a major upset against a player that's rated a bit higher than you, especially in faster games. A part of the reason why it's exciting is because it's really easy for White to stumble into a loss even in a completely winning position. I actually had one game where I played a queen sacrifice. (It was not a great move, though it was hard to find anything better in the position). I'm dead in the water. My opponent makes two false king moves and I get myself a new queen and mate him. That's how crazy this opening can be. I'm not really sure if I agree that accepting the gambit is best for White. There are different takes on that. However, if you do find that this is in fact the case, Fischer's definition of an inferior gambit is a gambit that can be refuted by accepting it. (He implies this in his "The King's Gambit Is Busted" article). Just something to keep in mind when playing any gambit.

10:22 Can you play Horse to F4, forces a check and means you can take his queen, yes he can take yours but black would be in a better question. Thoughts. Trade Queens seems the best moves for black.

6:17 white knight to f4 will be queen exchange then white can castle and has advantage of blacks structure being messy
@poryg5350
@poryg5350 6 жыл бұрын
fear9998 If Nf4, then Qe4+. White still loses the Knight if Qe2 to cover off the check. Black's pawns are messy and if white plays 0-0, he regains the initiative, but Black should be able to hold on to his extra material.
@poryg5350
@poryg5350 6 жыл бұрын
Or even better if Nf4, even queen exchange is fine, because after Nxh5 Nxd5 cxd5 Black has successfully undoubled his pawns and has a piece for a pawn. Again, after White castles, he gains the ibitiative, because Black needs time to regroup, but it is tenable.
@poryg5350
@poryg5350 6 жыл бұрын
In fact Black's biggest advantage is that White has no light squared bishop in the position, meaning that the only really huge weakness has been taken care of.

many variations from the 5:57 mark but the most common and aggressive move for me that i saw and most likely would have done is moving the knight and exposing the king to a check while simultaneously threatening the queen with the knight from f4! black blocks with queen. from there white retreats with his or her queen and castles after that. black is left with horrible pawn structure. easy game for white!

at lichess, it's 46:50 at 167,000 games, so it's only as sound as a grandmaster approved line because REAL gambits perform BETTER than mainlines at the amateur level. king's gambit, smith morra, blackmar diemer, and the french wing gambit etc. tend to PERFORM at +10% under 2200! forget anyone who calls gambits unsound! that's only against a GM, and i've NEVER played one.
