Mao dropped the coin and clapped his hands in that scene to simulate the sound of a chess piece being dropped into the scale to give Lelouch a figurative heart attack because at that point Mao is only one chess piece away from the bomb detonating. So he is psychologically torturing Lelouch.

I kinda like how this episode shows that Suzaku is the physical counterpart to Lelouch's mental genius. Lelouch is very much peak mental ability, and Suzaku is peak physical capability. Together, they really are unstoppable.

Fun fact: When Code Geass was in production, the creators made a bid for the 6pm Saturday night anime timeslot. However, they lost the bid and Code Geass was given a late night broadcast slot on Thursdays. The "loss" of that day became the gain of Sunrise, Code Geass itself, and the fans in the future because the schedule led the team to rethink their plans for the series and make changes and additions. The team behind Code Geass decided to add the school subgenre, the power of Geass, and the protagonist having an "evil" side, as they thought those elements might be suitable for a late-night anime and might be of interest for that audience. In my opinion, CG wouldn't have been the same without its Machiavellian genius teenage protagonist with his magic eye (and, although I am speculating, I think the creators decided to focus on the psychological aspect of their protagonist for that reason). I think CG would have been a generic mecha anime, if not for these changes.

This episode really makes Suzaku’s “work within the system” attitude make sense. He killed his dad because he thought it would be better to surrender and work with the Brittanians. So now he either has to double down on that world view or admit to himself that he killed his own father for nothing.
@enclaveherewhyisntyourvide3089
@enclaveherewhyisntyourvide3089 10 ай бұрын
I always thought that, because he killed his father for his own “selfish reasons”, the idea of taking action and doing something without being sanctioned by a higher power became anathema to him. He may have saved a lot of Japanese lives by killing his father, but he still can’t forgive himself and it weighs on his mind. That’s why on shikane island he tells Kallen that earning something by using the wrong methods leaves you only with regret and a hollow feeling; he was speaking from his own experience. But that’s just what I think.

So here we see one of the biggest differences psychologically between Lelouch and Suzaku, self awareness. Lelouch is trying to do good, we've seen plenty of times how he gets upset when people are demeaned, or how upset he was when Cornelia was doing the same thing as Clovis in slaughtering people. But also he fully acknowledges that another huge motivator for him IS revenge and he WILL do simply awful things to get his way. Suzaku is trying to do good, he wants as many people to survive as possible even if it's humiliating or not the best life. However when HIS issues come up, his self hatred and the lengths he already went to to get his way, he folds. Instantly just being forced to confront those parts of himself instantly has him shaking and soon has him screaming and on his knees. They are both hypocrites at times, but Lelouch will, typically, fully acknowledge that while Suzaku simply can't.

2 quick explanations that you might have been analyzing too deeply to see the obvious 😅 Ohgi was watching recorded surveillance of Vieletta, he’s basically keeping tabs on her while he’s away, making sure she isn’t going out or revealing zero’s identity, in case she’s lying or recovers her memories. As for Mao dropping the coin to the ground, he’s just toying with Lelouch, because there was only 1 piece left to trigger the bomb, and Lelouch’s nerves are so gittery, he’s so on edge and scared of that final piece going on the scale, that he gets tripped by anything, like a coin drop.

You guys have talked time and time again about how Suzaku's ideology is very flawed and illogical and the thruth is that it *is* flawed and illogical, but for completely reasonable reasons, as you can see here. Suzaku is so guilt ridden and traumatized from killing his father that he just wants to save people to not feel like a murderer. He doesn't even care if he dies trying because at least he would atone for what he's done that way.

You have to assume that if there's something physical that needs to be done, Suzaku can do it, but he's easily confused, and manipulated. Similarly, if there's something mental that needs to be done, Lelouche can do it, but he has no physical stamina, and he's going lose any fight if it comes down to one on one.

And so ends one of my favorite arcs in the series. Lelouch battling another Geass user and one that is literally a hard counter to him as a person is so much fun. And we see what happens when Lelouch and Suzaku team up. They are an unstoppable combo, even against someone like Mao. The chess game and "Never speak again!" are some of the best moments in the series, too. Just a great cap to a great arc. Anyway, I love the insight Mao gives into Lelouch during the game. Really explains how Mao can beat Lelouch. He's simply too analytical and literally tells Mao how to beat him. He's effectively fighting himself in the game and in general. In comparison, Mao couldn't predict Suzaku's movements even with his Geass. Instead, Suzaku seems to read his movements and react accordingly. An interesting comparison between our two leads. Kenny had predicted that Suzaku had killed his father, and he was correct. However, the reveal is still crazy. It is dropped out of nowhere just as you think we've beaten Mao for good, he uses the one thing that could actually stop Suzaku. And it's something that gives some great insight into Suzaku. A small aside in the episode reveals that Clovis had recreated Lelouch's childhood home. Something that is only really implied in the series is that Clovis really did love his half-brother. In fact, the reason he was so oppressive to the Japanese is that he blamed them for the death of Lelouch and Nunnally. Something that we now see weighs on Cornelia as well. A humanizing moment for someone we regularly see as quite racist.

I always kinda thought the Mao arc was weak compared to the rest but seeing it again I still don't really like it, but it's probably one of the most important arcs. I love how this episode is simultaneously so intense and emotional and then utterly hilarious. (Though admittedly a lot of that hilarity is because I can't unhear Code Ment.) Like, Lelouch trying to punch and then catch Mao, a guy who literally just got out of the hospital and is covered in bandages from being shot repeatedly, and just completely stumbling because he's so unathletic. Or Lloyd proposing to Milly within a couple sentences. (It makes sense, he's doing it to keep up appearances I guess and she needs to be married off to someone with status for the Ashford family, so yeah beating around the bush and pretending to date and fall in love isn't really necessary, but even for an arranged marriage he manages to be blunt.) And Code Ment really does capture how the Suzaku kick perfectly: "I'm gonna kick it." "That is a terrible idea." "Oh my god he kicked it."

This episode is great example what this show gives you in its amazing plot: it's possible to predict some part of what will happen but you're not ready what will happen further or what will be revealed more about characters or world later. It's amazing and what's the best of this show it's only getting better and better after more episodes. The development of plot and characters finally reaches the point at the end when you, after seeing that, transcend yourself from stopping thinking about daily bread and begin to see meaning of love, peace, humanity, lies and sacrifice. That's what will wait for you at the great final and we can't wait to see that. :) From here that's all for Mao. He was great villain and the one of the biggest threat to Lelouch. He was really a tough opponent as he made really smart moves to defeat Lelouch and he almost won. However we see that Lelouch is indescribable genius and manouvered him brilliantly. That's one of the reasons why Lelouch is to be considered pne of the best antagonist in history of anime and I am sure you'll see later more about his genius. This episode gives us a lot of foreshadowing but I think two things are worth remembering from this episode: as it was said there's nothing that can stop Lelouch and Suzaku when they're working together and the chapel - it's not important place to the plot but is bit important to understand one of the meanings to great final of this show. We all are waiting for your reaction to episode 22. :) Thank you for all of this! :) Best wishes young married couple!

Don't know if you guys discerned this yet or not, but for the whole scale thing, as you assumed, Mao would just be able to read Lulu's thoughts, and trigger it himself. But, a theory I have is that Mao rigged it to trigger the bomb regardless of what side the pendulum fell, expecting Lulu to possibly push the scale down, while I also believe that Lulu took that into account, which may be why he didn't go to do it. My own head cannon. In this episode, Suzaku's biggest secret is discovered, and at the same time, Kenny confirms his prediction in the eleventh episode (I guess he must have been elated when he found out he was right): Suzaku k*lled his father. The part he didn't get to guess is that since then Suzaku has been trying to atone for this sin through death by constantly putting himself in danger while he serves the greater good as a soldier of Britannia. Some haters use this secret as an argument to expose Suzaku as hypocritical and selfish. But, like Lelouch and his thirst for revenge and his desire to create a better world for his sister, Suzaku's su*cid*l tendencies and selfless nature are not mutually exclusive. The reality is quite complex. Suzaku k*lls his father (who was the Prime Minister of Japan) because he refused to abandon a war that Japan was never going to win. After all, his enemy was an empire with the highest technology. In Suzaku's opinion, his father's stubbornness and ego were going to sacrifice many innocent lives in Japan in the long run in fruitless battles, and seeing that his father refused to listen to even his son, Suzaku decided to do the unthinkable: take his life (all this talk he has given since the fourth episode about how results should not prevail over means doesn't come from his moralism, it comes from his own experience and he justifies it with moralism). The consequence of this forced early surrender is that Japan became the area that offered the greatest resistance against the empire through multiple insurrection groups. Hence, Britannia is much more ruthless and oppressive towards Area 11 than any other area since it is constantly suppressing rebel activities (and, to top it all off, Zero is a figure who inspires rebellion in the Japanese, which further increases the repression of Britannia). Faced with this situation, Suzaku only feels one way: guilty. Guilty for k*ll*ng his father, guilty for the insurgent attitude of his people, guilty for the oppression that the Japanese suffer every day, because, even though his decision saved many people and mitigated the outcome of the war for Japan, he can't help but question whether he did the right thing at the time. It doesn't help that his last name was later tarnished by officially published stories and articles about how the war ended and that the Britannians discriminated against him and the Japanese treated him as a traitor (this was hinted at in episode 5 when Tamaki insults Suzaku and later in episode 15 when the Holy Four Swords talk about Suzaku's father being a coward for ending the war prematurely). And in fact, it seems to me that this episode hints with the flashback where Lelouch and Suzaku (and Nunnally) walk through that field of corpses that, as a result of the invasion and m*rder of his father and its implications, Suzaku suffers of post-traumatic stress disorder (I think Lelouch also has PTSD, it's just less noticeable in him). So, Suzaku feels useless, helpless and responsible for his own misfortune and that of his people and that leads to one thing: self-hatred (no Suzaku hater hates Suzaku more than he hates himself). It is understandable that Suzaku thinks that this way his father's death would receive justice, in addition to the fact that he feels that it would be better for him to die than to continue as he is (according to his moral code, all people should be punished for their bad acts). Guilt, trauma, and this terrible experience in the face of war were what shaped Suzaku's current beliefs. Guilt is the core of Suzaku's narrative arc and it is what will motivate him to look for the remedy, which is it? Peace (in various senses). Well, this is all I can say for now. Honestly, I don't think I did justice to Suzaku. Fortunately there is still a lot to see about Suzaku's narrative arc and its development, so I will be able to continue unraveling him. I hope my humble comment has been useful to you or anyone who stops by to read it. I'll feel good if someone can understand this character a little more. I wonder if Montana has been asked for an analysis of Suzaku, now that his past is known. It would be worth listening to her opinion. As a side note, all I have to say is that Lelouch's plan to defeat Mao once and for all is one of his most cunning strategies and one of his best moments.

Lastly this is why in anime unless you see a character die on screen and then be double tapped, there is a good chance that character is not dead and will come back.

One theory in addition to medical tech being good strong Geass users have bodies somewhat similar to CC though not exactly the same. Can't say more on it. The coin drop was just to make him think he put a piece on the scales, it makes the same sound. You know I can suspend my disbelief for a lot of things including running up the wall to kick the gun away but a robot machine gun guarding the school sewer is where I draw the line. Nothing going on with the camera it's just her in different places at different times. Yeah the series has alright chess metaphors but actual chess, not that great. The one time Lelouch tries to throw a punch is when he sees his "best friend" being tortured. Love that whole scene but not a huge fan of Mao spelling out the subtext when the reveal already explain Suzaku's behaviour.

The school used to be the worlds most cutting-edge facility for weapons research and was where Lelouch’s mothers (the legendary knightmare pilot Marianne) knightmare (the Ganymede) was made. It was brought up early on but most miss it as it’s not explicit.

If you play chess against a less skilled opponent and play a solid game, it shouldn't matter if they know your strategy. Lelouch essentially played a game of chess against himself, which should end in a draw at worst. At best, he could focus on playing recklessly with Mao's pieces without analyzing too far ahead. Sometimes when playing, you could look at the board and play the first move that comes to mind, but knowingly "play" (think of) unsound moves before working out their refutations. Mao would know of the sub-optimal choice, but then he would have to come up with the refutation himself. It would only take one blunder on Mao's part before Lelouch could win mathematically, regardless of what Mao knew.
@0cidd0
@0cidd0 Жыл бұрын
That play without think would never work if leoluch he is q heavily overthink, just to look at the board for 1 sec he would think in the moves. Its really impossible to play without think. Actually even if you aren’t leoluch if you know how to play chess your subconscious will think just to in looking to the pieces. A lot of chess master play chess with time so they need to think faster. So its literally impossible for him play without think.
@ryanmanning2319
@ryanmanning2319 Жыл бұрын
@@0cidd0 You might not have the ability to play without thinking, but distraction lowers cognitive ability. Sure Lelouch has genius level intellect, but even he could distract himself to the point that he did things sub-optimally. All humans have their limits. Just ask the people I hospitalized while playing chess on my phone while driving. The worst thing about that? I lost the chess game.

@@ryanmanning2319 so he would still losses anyway. Mao didn’t need to win the whole game just take more pieces. If he is playing without even look he would just give free pieces

Mao literally explains that Lelouch analyzes his ever action. His comment about Lelouch having himself, a critic, and an observer is basically just saying Lelouch over analyzes his every move. Thus, what you suggest is impossible for him. He just doesn’t have it in him to play without thinking.

Full Spoilers Ahead! 26:45 It is interesting that the show clearly was planned ahead enough to have crumbs and foreshadowing about C's World plotline (they even show C talking to "someone" when she is alone), but it is clearly not that strictly thought out, given many inconsistencies such as what C2 told Mao here, Charles saying he was talking with Clovis, and even C2 talking with "someone" seems to have been scratched out altogether.
@TheJokerAkaCirque
@TheJokerAkaCirque Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure those are inconsistencies (though I think you're right that plans were altered from what they thought at this point) . The Clovis one i can only speculate about but there's possibilities. C2 saying "wait in C's World" I can think of a couple meanings. Might be to comfort him with the false belief that he's going somewhere he'll see her again when really she's just killing him, or maybe it's less literal and more metaphorical. The "talking to someone" thing is completely consistent with the rest of the show. There's one episodes with an inconsistency where she appears to speak to a *separate* someone who she shouldn't be able to. The rest are clearly aimed at one person who the final episodes reinforce she could reach.
@zephshoir

@@TheJokerAkaCirqueThe bit about Marianne I agree, but not on the others. I think that it is clear that they originally intended for dead people to remain in C's World in some way or degree; hence what C2 told Mao, Charles talking with Clovis, and perhaps this linked in some way with Marianne differently how it ends up doing. Regardless, my point remains that some of the original details or ideas of C's World didn't end up in the final product.

Mao survived because the story doesn't take place in America. Outside America the police doesn't shoot to kill. They are trained to incapacitate suspects, not eliminate them. So when Lelouch ordered them to shoot, they followed their training.

That makes no sense to the point of being stupid. An occupying, fascist ,openly racist, corrupt power somehow has a humane police force? Not only that, Lelouch decided to use said force without considering that despite being closer to that structure than anyone? Bullshit! They needed to pad out run time and brought him back in one of the dumbest episodes in the series. Care to explain how he got a big fuckoff motion controlled bomb set up by himself under the school?

The older I get, the less I like Lelouch and the more I like Suzaku. He is trying to follow a more humane path (within the framework of his view of the world) while Lelouch, in order to defeat the dragon, decided that he must become a dragon (and perhaps more ruthlessly terrible than his enemy). A very logical step, but perhaps the most straightforward and simplest for a person with his talents and capabilities.
