He forgot to explain why the king cannot take the knight. If the king takes the knight, a checkmate can be forced from there.

For those who would like to know, taking the knight at 7:07 leads to a rather quick checkmate: Kxe6, Qd5, Kf5, e6+, Kf4... After this the game can end in a number of different ways that if you're creative enough, you should figure out.

He forgot to tell that if black takes the bishop with the king, and then taking the knight on e6 also with the king, it is actually a mate in 5/6 pattern: 12. Qd5+, Kf5. 13. g4+, Kxg4. 14. Rg1+, Kh5 {14... Kh4. 15. Qe4+ [15.Bg5+, Kh5 (..Kh3. 16. Qg2#). 16. Qd1+, Rf3. 17. Qf3#], 15. ...Rf4 (15... Kh5. 16. Qg4#). 16. Qxf4+ Kh5. 17 Qg5# (17. Qg4#)}. 15. Qg2, d6. 16. Qg5#. in the end, on move 15 are many threats of mate in 1 regardless of what black does. If black doesn't move the pawn on d7 we have mate with Qh3, Qg4, and if black does move the pawn, we have the mate that I stated there.

Gabriel Edery I think the 1mate move is basicly this: after king takes knight, white moves queen to d5. with queen in d5 king cant move back to f7, and it also cant move to f6 because of the pawn in e5. Also if the king takes the d5queen, the c3 knight takes him out. I think this is what ahmad meant, but i dont know that much about chess anyway, so I might be wrong :)
@TheAelenium
@TheAelenium 9 жыл бұрын
Jaime Jordan After Qd5+ the king goes to f5 (which is the only square available for the black king) as i stated in the analysis, which means that it is not a mate in 1 because the king has an escape route (which will only last for 5 more moves as I also stated in the analysis).

Good to see what this is called, i often like attacking in this style. Infact I had a hand held chess computer which fitted into a docking station on a board with pressure sensitive squares and the only way I managed to find a way to beat it was by using a similar trap. It seems some computers are greedy but I had to sacrifice alot including my Queen to win, I actually wrote the game down I was so impressed with myself lol

With all due respect, Kevin, one would not say that Fischer was "not opposed to mixing it up." He deeply, profoundly, absolutely believed that e4 was the correct first move, always. For those who are confused or thinking of alternatives, it is a foolproof trap for the black queen from the point where the knight stacks in between the queen and the rook at 6:10 After this, no matter what the move is the black queen is captured or the black king checkmated. If the black decides to sacrifice the knight instead of moving it to e8 at 6:10, only then the queen can be saved.

Obviously it seems like a bad idea but it's still nice for the commentator to show the mate line. In this situation it's hard to mess up as white but there are situations in chess where the king looks in peril after some sacrifices yet with inaccurate play the king can escape danger with the defender suddenly being up pieces and back to a winning position
@brianvaughan4163

Mwuesse no. If every single contingent move was fully explained the video lessons would become too long, too boring and overwrought. A good mid to advanced level lesson should beg student to engage and think for themselves. That's also part of the fun.
@Mwuesse
@Mwuesse 6 жыл бұрын
The video would maybe be 15 seconds longer, I fail to see how it would suddenly become boring and overwrought. Many people enjoy long videos with different lines explored - as can be seen in success by KC channel when he did longer videos and by agdamator's channel these days. Nobody asks for every line to be covered but it's nice to see some of the interesting variations.

"Early on in the game, you typically favor bishops over knights." Sorry, but I actually disagree. You favor bishops over knights in the endgame, assuming that the bishop is able to do something and is not being held at bay by pawns. Bishop against knight in the opening isn't really much of an advantage.
@zeus1141
@zeus1141 8 жыл бұрын
the real answer... bishops or knights get their value of the position being played at hand. you cannot say "bishops are good at end game" because it is possible to have the wrong bishop for the end game... then a knight would be better than the wrong bishop
@GoUtes92
@GoUtes92 8 жыл бұрын
I also said "assuming that the bishop is able to do something and is not being held at bay by pawns". Bishops travel more quickly than knights when allowed to do so, although that doesn't guarantee that the bishop is better. It means that in a random endgame position with a bishop against a knight, the bishop is more likely to be the better piece.
@gabrielreinalter2269
@gabrielreinalter2269 5 жыл бұрын
@@GoUtes92 In high level play that is not true. For a biginner the knight is more valueable because he has simple tactics like the fork and even newer player find it harder to calculate them. But Bobby Fischer himself said that the knight is 3 points and the bishop 3 2/5.

I love playing chess with against people like me who don't study it or learn the moves becasue chess has lost all sense of strategy since it's creation. Not to offend anyone but because both players have the same number and type of pieces bothe are exactly equal, creating the problem where after a time all of the strategies will have been found out and it loses a sense of strategy and becomes a game of who knows more strategies and who can enact a better one first. But if you don't study chess and you play with someone else who doesn't study chess it is an amizing game where both players are making decision about the pieces without a plan for the end game and are reacting to each others moves

This is for beginners like myself, but yes, it is an amazing way to play chess, as long as you look ahead at least 2-5 moves it will be fun.

can't the king take the knight?
@deadagain33
@deadagain33 10 жыл бұрын
He could, but it would be a mate in 6. If you are good enough to fall for this trap, you should be could enough to see it. Of course, some beginners would take and maybe some other beginners wouldn't even mate but a forced mate is possible if white would then play right. Look below in the comments, people have already said the combination...

Thanks a lot Kevin. A really good, educational and entertaining analysis of this game. Ps... I just finished a biography of Bobby Fischer: "End game" by Frank Brady. Recommend to all you Fischer fans to read this interesting, although a tragic story at the end. In any case, I still feel that Robert Fischer has been the best chess player up to date - Regarding chess generally, I somehow feel that even chess has become more boring the past years. Most of the great games result in draws...the players are just so well-trained with their supporting teams and computers - really hard to win games nowadays at the GM level...a bit boring...But, this is a fantastic sports, let's just push this forward...!!!

exactly! the pawn e6 open check is the best move , but just to make it simple i would say whether the king goes to f6 or g4 , eitherway queen to g5 is chkmate # urs is absolutely correct too , cheers!

He just didn't replace the white square bishop at B3 from when he was demonstrating the possibilities of what the black knight at A5 could do. Basically, that knight would be defended by the bishop that wasn't replaced.

pawn D7 could take the E6 when he sees his Queen and rook are being pressured. Also, E6 isn't being protected by any piece so the pawn D7 could easily take the knight instead of moving his Queen to C7.

What about 5.Nxc6 instead of 5.Nc3, leading on to either ...bxc6(isolating the a pawn, which is bad) or ...dxc6 6.Qxd8 Kxd8(preventing castling which is also bad)? Then there could be some ideas w/c3 and be3 and Nd2 depending on what black does.

I think Bobby's bishop to B3 is to prevent: ... Nxe4, Nxe4 Pd5, forking the bishop and knight to win the exchange and break into the center with tempo.

Is there an elaboration of the line where, in the opening, the knight on c6 captures on d4? Is Qxd4 the best move or is there a better play without getting the queen out in the open?

These are always tough cause you can't assume the opposition will do what you show move for move, or even remotely close. Of course it'll work if everything lines up but it may be a long shot

depends.. i have seen plenty players capturing the knight in d4 with their one in the sicilian opening... never got to use this trap until i got to 1700/1800 rated players.

another thing is that the knight on e6 can capture the g7 bishop. now you might notice that the king can take on that knight that's on g7.
