It's the safest square considering ding's pawn structure and pieces on the board coz he has his rook pair whereas magnus has lost one, so now he can go all out with his pieces without worrying much abt defending the his king

Interesting game! At 12:06, I was surprised at Rg1, because Qxf3 seems the intuitive move, so I ran the game through Stockfish, which agrees that Qxf3 is the best move there. I'm not criticizing Magnus; it's tough to play with so little time left on the clock. By the way, according to Stockfish, the game was more or less even until 10:40, which was the turning point of the game, as Magnus began losing by playing Qe5; Stockfish says Magnus should have played Qf6 instead.

Black will exchange queens, and then play f2. The bishop opened up and is now defending the rook, so after Rf1 stopping the pawn from queening, black plays Rg1 double check and wins the game

Bishop on b2 hanging in the end and after recapture with e4 pawn black's bishop on c6 is lasering white's paralyzed king and there are no winning chances for magnus in this position. Tricks were all he had in the final moves.
