Magnus Carlsen takes on the Vishy Anand quiz! Phenomenal memory!

The Tata Steel Chess India Grand Chess Tour is the strongest chess event ever in Indian chess history. Because the event is in India and because Vishy Anand will turn 50 years old in a few days, we decided to hold the Vishy Anand challenge.
We selected 9 of Anand's most beautiful gems and gave those positions to the World Champion Magnus Carlsen. The challenge was to guess who were Anand's opponents in each game and what was the move that was played!

Inner Worlds I would like to corroborate your thoughts on the subject as I believe that is how I found chessbase India as well. I believe he plugged them in the mysterious queen sacrifice video or the one just after that in his apology about getting the PGN incorrect(for what it’s worth this is a complete shot in the dark and I am not sure if it was that video but in the spirit of this video with Magnus’ incredible memory, I wanted to test/push my own not so amazing memory).

I just loved that interview. You can obviously see what a tremendous chess enthusiast Carlsen is. Even though he and Vishy were rivals during the World Championship Matches and they still compete against each other on a regular basis, Carlsen doesn’t want Vishy to stop playing because he respects him so much and is thankful for everything he has done for chess in the past and still does nowadays. This video perfectly captures Carlsens immense understanding for the game and just when I thought it couldn’t get any better a wild Giri appeared and trolled Carlsen. Thanks for that video-gem!

@@mfigmac Of course he has some genetic advantage. Not necessarily autistic photographic memory, but his memory and brain capacity can not be average, otherwise he wouldn't be a world champ. He is not the only hard working chess player who has been playing since they were little, there are thousands and thousands of those who'd never beat Magnus once. Was it at age 9 or 12 he drew a game with Kasparov? Definitely not your regular brain.

There are many factors that lead someone to world Championship, (like team management, study methods etc) besides genetic. i don't think it's so clear, but could be. In science, we need proofs beyond "if this, then that".

@@mfigmac OH there's plenty of proof that not one human is the same to the next. Look at height, look at reaction speed, look at IQ. We are all different with different capacities. That'd be like asking for scientific evidence that LeBron is indeed more apt for basketball than your average 5'2 Asian female. Obviously Magnus capacity for remembering and quick puzzle solving at the very least is above average. Again, you won't find an average 5'9 guy ever being the best basketball player in the world, hasn't happened once in history and might never happen. Claiming Magnus is probably just average is an insult to the amount of hard working chess players and coaches there are in the world. No matter what team you have, a 12 yr is not gonna draw kasparov if it's your regular kid, and no matter what team you have when you're playing blitz and bullet which Magnus is still #1 in the world. If you play a lot of chess and actually try to get better and see how complex a game it really is you'd realize no one becomes a world champ for like 6+ years simply by working hard. You need hard work, talent, and on top of that a good team/being brought up with chess. Even then you might just be a regular GM which no one thinks much about. There are levels to chess.

Well, in some press conferences Magnus clearly shows when finds the questions boring or annoying, and then he is no longer so respectful. But I think Sagar is a really good interviewer, and the idea with the quiz is great: Perfectly suited for Magnus and his phenomenal memory, and I guess he really enjoys it; and the quiz is interesting as well as for many of us viewers.

@@satviktripathi7263 I think you misunderstand me here. Magnus is very respectful to his colleagues, of course. And to Interviewers like Jan Gustafsson and Sagar Shah as well. What I meant is that he can be less respectful towards interviewers if he doesn't like their questions. But I don't criticise that, Magnus is very Independent, and does not care much what people think of him. Daniil Dubov once said that he learned from Carlsen in that respect, to care less about "what people say".

Chess skills are enhanced if one has great memory. That is like prerequisite for a GM level chess player. Magnus Carlsen remembers chess games as one remembers unique faces of people. I guess the idea of pattern recognition is the same, but the interest and aptitude for the abstract analysis involved in remembering the details is another level. Huge respect.
