Samay Raina interviews the CEO of Global Chess League

Sameer Pathak from Tech Mahindra is the CEO of the Global Chess League. He has worked extremely hard to create chess' biggest league. How did he manage to do that? Suggession - One thing we can do for sure is have a Chess Players Roundtable just like they do for Actors and Actresses right at the end of the year in December maybe just after Tata Steel India Rapid & Blitz and before World Rapid & Blitz.Imagine a Mixed(Foreign GM + Indian GM) Men Roundtable, Mixed Women Roundtable, Only Indian GMs roundtable, Prodigy Roundtable, Girls Roundtable. We can summarize their individual year and successes(Ups and Downs), etc(See Anupama Chopra's or Rajeev Masand's roundtable to get an idea) Trust me Sagar Bhai. It will be a huge hit. Make it an annual event.

@@kuchbhikahinbhi712 Nahi Bhai They can talk about their year, state of chess, future of chess, potential changes that they would love to see in fide tournaments, Candidates winner prediction, etc. In fact we can even have Coaches Roundtable,Legends Roundtable, Arbiters Roundtable, Professional Chess Photographers table. We need more conversation in and around the chess world and all these discussions will contribute and give us a lot of food for thought. Also will raise the status of professional chess players to mini celebs which brings in more interest, fans, sponsors, events. It can even shed some light on what is going right or wrong in women/men's chess.

I've had the pleasure of working closely with Mr Pathak while he was with Coca Cola. Had a fair few conversations with him. The one thing he's very good at is that he asks you a lot of questions to challenge you. He also tends to wait for you to figure puzzles out. Excellent operator. Was convinced he would be more than capable of heading such an event. Pleased for Mr Pathak. Hoping to run into him in the future again.

12:24 Sameer talking about the teams required to organise an event...and the list goes on and on...and ome thing I realised, though not on this big a level, though with lesser prize fund, but Samay has been doing all this with just a of few people (and not few teams). He has literally taken care of each and everything- be it player relations, prize fund, commentary, fan experience, marketing, advertising, entertainment- everything! Respect for Samay just increased ❤ Nothing to take away from Sameer and all the people involved in making Global Chess League actually Global and so big!Kudos 🔥

I had a lot of fun following the event so far. Congrats to Sameer Pathak and his team, all their hard work is clearly visible! What an amazing league this has been! Some suggestions for marketing for season 2: 1. Collaborate with chess youtubers and Twitch chess streamers like Gothamchess, Agadmator etc. to bring more awareness. 2. Have popular personalities like actors (Amir Khan, John Abraham etc) who are into chess, to own or promote teams. We already had Yuzi and Sania Mirza this year, that was a great start! 3. Run interesting ads on KZbin, TV etc. 4. Maybe teams can be named after cities/countries.

My #suggestion for marketing - Hoardings won't work in chess bacause the fanbase is spread around the world. It's not dense like Cricket in India. So, go-to people are agadmator, gothamchess, hikaru etc. to market the league on their channels. Its very important because you market your thing where the audience gathers.

Btw some suggestions For pr- do a sponsored video with the biggest chess influecers about the league. And provide specific info on where the event is going to be streamed. Its best if its yt cause all people around the world can watch and no confusion. Another suggestion is to indentify which are the languages chess fans are concentrated.and maybe take 3 languages -hindi, eng and spanish maybe. Have commentry teams for all the languages wid less people in one team. In that way we can enjoy the hindi commentry flavour that samay brings and all the jokes he cracks. Cause he is not that fluent in english and i think english restricts his wit and charm.

Chess is not a high octane sport that he’s trying to make it be. I don’t think you can ever have an arena with 5000 people screaming at a chess match. The very nature of a chess match is calm, composed and calculated. The more fast paced, open contact a sport becomes, the more you can “scream”..

His reply to the criticism of marketing shows that he doesn't really know the chess audience well. Most of the people who got hooked onto your streams during the pandemic are on KZbin and Twitch. Putting up billboards and hoardings is not going to reach them. It in fact reaches that audience which doesn't care much about chess. Please focus more on digital marketing next time.

2.5 saal ke journey hai fir bhi marketing karna bhul gaye....plus bhai jub samay ko bulane ka plan starting say hi tha toh hindi mey commentary karwa tho naa..dikhta nhi hai kya ke wo apne channel pey hindi mey hi commentary karta hai or issi liye wo popular hai he is struggling to keep up with other english commentators baaki sports ke bhi toh multi language commentary hoti hai

Had very high expectations for this league but sorry to say it was a failure. They are saying they has great organisation but the organisation and the viewing experience both on and off screen was way below expectations. In the dressing room of the players it looked like apart from players everyone was roaming around in the hall and the room. It looked like some school competition where anyone can roam anywhere not the best chess league as they have been saying from the start. Also the viewing experience was so bad, the audience could only the see the board in front of them and that too they couldn't see properly qs it was blocked by the player. The seating arrangement and the viewing experience of the playing hall was pathetic to say the least. Even the players could not see their teammates games properly. Also they were saying there will be so many cameras and lights for the first time in chess but other chess tournaments still have so much better camera work that this league. The viewing experience online has been the worst we have seen in a while. Firstly nobody knew till the very last day that where people can watch the league and it broadcasted finally the sound quality and the broadcast was one of the worst we have seen in a while. Like the commentators are talking about game A but the chess board has been shown of game C. I really wanted this league to be successful and something new in chess but it was a big disappointment almost in every department. It didnt looked like something new rather it looked like a college level chess competition. Hope it will be better in upcoming season.
