Deep Sacrifice in the Schliemann | Leela Chess Zero ID 467 vs Stockfish 6

Leela Chess Zero ID 467 takes on Stockfish 6 in a Ruy Lopez, Schliemann Defense with bullet time controls. Leela's efficient opening development is challenged early by Stockfish 6's central pawn duo. Stockfish 6's pawns give the white knights an early kick, and soon thereafter a sharpened middlegame ensues. By move 16, the pawn structure would become a key element with white acquiring a 4:2 majority on the kingside, and black acquiring a 4:2 majority on the queenside. A big question would be, how can one best demonstrate their pawn majority is a great strength?

It's an it not a she, and that was Stockfish 6. it doesn't stand a chance against stockfish 9 or 10,calculations are way too deep for it.

From watching Leela and Alpha Zero, I feel like there is some big possibilities in strategies involving killing the opponents Bishops by messing with their pawn structure. That Bishop sacrifice killed the entire Queen side of Black’s board. Maybe one day we could see more GMs emulate this in their play. Anyways thank you always for the great content Jerry.

The way these engines do it require SO much calculation though, I don't think a human brain is even capable of calculating so many lines at once. But yeah, I wish it was possible too cause it makes for amazing games!

Thinking of it, Levon Aronian actually played a game that was somewhat reminiscent of this where he gave up the exchange and a pawn to just isolate the black queen out of the game. It ended in a draw, but that was a beautiful showcase aswell

I did get the BC4 move. Reason 1 - I guessed that it was probably a sacrifice. 2 - I remember Anand Aronian game 2013 had a similar move. It was a just a blind guess tho. Great video as always!

Funny, when you said 'I wonder how many of you are gonna come up with this', Bc4 was the first move that came to my mind. However, I did not see white's pawn move as a follow-up. I only saw Bc4 dxc4 Qxc4+ Be6, so I abandoned the thought. Great video as always, Jerry, you are doing such a fine work by all these analyses! a mistake by Stockfish 6 in this game was after b4 by leela, sf6 replied with c5-c4. Evaluation was +1.82 at depth 33. a5 should've been played in reply to b4

I was actually thinking about Bc4 because I was looking for a way to defend against the discovered check and to disrupt the black passed pawns at the same time. And because you were saying stuff like "you will never guess this move", I was looking for crazy ways to do that. No chance I could have seen whether it was a good move, though, and no chance I would have ever even considered it while playing a game. This is a "you get it because you know it's a special move" type move.

14:27 The reason of Kf2, Kf1. Kf2: White has all the time in the world, so he prepares a liiiittle bit for the endgame. Kf1: He wants to prevent Ba7+ with sudden tactics for Black. And he can't go to e2, or doesn't want, because of B:e6 fe Q:e6+, a sudden sacrifice. These are my guesses.

I think, in such situations it is important to look through possibilities of black side to return gained material in order to avoid problems they faces in the game. For example, take one of the e-f white's pawns by black bishop. Anyway this piece almost useless, so black could do this. This "counter-sacrafice" can be done in different ways, some of them should be discussed But anyway, video is great as always, thank you :)

Seems like leela is already above human level. Im especially impressed by the way it plays in. Its much easier to follow the game then any other classical chess software. There seems to be a motif and a clear theme permeating and its play. Referred to as "human like moves" by some people. Thanks for making these videos Jerry by the way :) thumbs up

I had stockfish 8 running on the side, it needs a minute to realise how good the moves from Leela are, it sometimes showed her losing, and then changing the evaluation to ~0, or from losing to winning even. Amazing what Leela has shown us. I wanna see AlphaZero vs Leela!

A recurring theme in some games for Leela and Alpha Zero is the way they go about paralysing some of their opponents pieces in the same way that Karpov did in some of his more famous games. However, Karpov seldom played the deep strategic sacrifices that Leela and Alpha Zero play.

What an insanely deep move (B-c4). These AI's have an amazing ability to make these crazy sacs to put the opponent in an almost zewswang position. Amazing how they can calculate that the extra material is more then made up for in the opponent having all their pieces tied down. Very impressive chess!

For me, it was between h3 and Bc4. First, there isn't really a great prophylactic king move or blocking move for the inevitable c4+. Playing h3 would allow Kh1 next, since it prevents Nxh2 (cannot be captured without h3 due to Qh4+). On the other hand, Bc4 blocks c4 directly, attacks the pinned d-pawn, and sets up the f5 advance as mentioned in the video. In my opinion, it's pretty close between the two moves - I think either is playable with a slight advantage for white.

I wonder if Leela's king maneuver near the end is to get the king out of striking range of the bishops while taking advantage of Black's lack of room to move. (No need to get there directly when Black is bottled up like that.)

I guessed Bd4 and after cxd4 Bd3, idea is the same but after seeing the move, Bc4 is defenitely better gaining one tempo and getting rid of the passed pawn.

Ms Zero loves her pawns! Leela seems to have figured out how to value her pawns and pieces depending their mobility in the actual position. That’s not a sacrifice of a bishop it’s a trade, an average bishop for a monster pawn pair. The hardest thing for us humans is to compare apples to oranges, AI no problem.

Found Bc4. Had to block the discovered check and force pawn takeback. However, i was thinking queen recaptures w/check then going after the knight w/f5. But when i saw knight takes e5 i stopped calculating as i realized the pawn duo was just too powerful to break up.

The idea behind the bishop move Bc4 is tempo. After the follow-up f5 Black needs three moves (at least) to liberate the bishop on c8 and the rook on a8. In addition to 3 tempi, white gets a connected passed pawn on the 6th rank and an attack on the king. The initiative is just too strong. Very hard to find this move and even harder to prove it's correct.

I did think about Bc4, because of the diagonal towards the white king, which would be problematic if the N on g4 were able to coordinate with the black bishop on f2. Also if black were able to play d4 this would be a very annoying move for the white bishop on c3. My other candidate move was f5 which is the one I plumbed for unfortunately.
