Bobby Fischer crushes Chilean Chess Champion in 23 moves | 1960

Featured is a Round 8 game from the Leipzig Olympiad of 1960. It was played between Chilean chess champion Rene Letelier Martner and Bobby Fischer on October 24th. International Master Letelier won the Chilean Chess Championship 5 times (1957, 1959, 1960, 1964 & 1972). With 4...0-0, rather than the most popular d6, Fischer invited Letelier's e-pawn into his house. That invitation was accepted and soon Fischer would be confronted with an optically menacing white pawn center of 4. How one ought to handle such a central structure is especially valuable for chess minds who look to improve. Fischer demonstrates how to dismantle white's center, and adds double exclamation marks with his flashy final move.

I had the honor of speaking personally with René Letelier, and he was a true gentleman. The great thing about him is that he became an International Master without even being a professional chess player. He worked in a bank, and in his free time or vacations he played tournaments. Regarding this game, he mentioned that he just enjoyed every move that Fischer made on the board (Letelier played 3 times against Fischer, being defeated 2 times, and beating Bobby 1 time). Sorry my English. It's not my first language :)

I really liked the way the game was described. Each move was analyzed with possible options, giving the viewer opportunity to see how Fischer developed his strategy. Some commentators are too fast, too slick. This was much better.

I knew mister Letelier, who once showed me precisely this game and told me how he has been taught a lesson. Mr Letelier died some years ago. He was a very humorous person, funny and witty. I was under his coaching for a while, but he - and me- expended most of the time with little and funny histories of his life and chess player. I will never forget a sight of him analyzing a game with a bottle at his side....

I'm bemused by the comments complaining about narration and too "much talking"! This is called analysis people, talking and going back and forward. If you don't like it just skip using the arrow key if you've heard of it!

No, and they all do this. They are not analyzing the moves of these worlds best chess players, or they would just stick to their moves, trying to explain why they moved there, and not interject what else could have been done. Not one game have I seen anybody describe as a Bobby Fisher game, tries to explain what Fischer was thinking only, (and his opponent). They always have to add their own options, that the best in the world rejected. Not one of these guys will beat my computer game on line either, (grand master chess 3). Come on, "show me what you would do", even at the easy adult level, with your own game. These guys are as worthless as a philosophy class.

@@EarthSurferUSA This is a ridiculous criticism. Theory has moved on now. If this position or opening comes up again, modern theory will put Fischer’s position into trouble. It’s great analysis and teaching material to show modern theory as well as what was played at the time.

@@EarthSurferUSA In order to fully appreciate each move, you need to show the options which "the best in the world rejected". The reason why one move was made, and the reason why all other moves were not made, these are one and the same. Analysis videos like this are for chess enthusiasts who enjoy the complexity and richness of the game. It's fine if you don't appreciate it, chess isn't for everyone. But personally I love these videos and Jerry has some of the best insight and analysis on KZbin, and he's actually both a good player and good instructor on top of that.

I was very pleased with how you could analyze the game without really distracting from the game itself. That is a gift that many You Tube Chess analysts do NOT have. For some reason, you were able to get me to see the brilliance of each Fischer move without getting me "lost." Before your video, I watched an interview with a grey-bearded Bobby Fischer from sometime in the 1980s or early 90s. In the interview he professed to HATE what the game of chess had become. He said that the study of Openings variations had turned the game into a contest of memorization and it had eliminated most of the creativity from the game. In this game you analyzed, you demonstrate what made Fischer great. He reveled in diverging from a standard opening line and exploiting the confusion of his opponent who continued in the standard line, believing it had been proven the best way to proceed. Here Fischer showed the superiority of the creative mind over a standard opening book. In current times, computers can sometimes reveal new lines of analysis that humans may have abandoned. But many computer programs adhere to Opening Books just like humans.

In this case, it was a study of how to deal with an immediate mass advance of center pawns in the very beginning of the game, using a Fischer game for illustration. Anybody who follows Fischer knows this game was in his “My 60 most memorable games”. The game is a fine illustration of how White can over extend a pawn center and wind up getting crushed by Black against the King’s Indian Defence.
