Hi mike. Great video as always. My mother had a Hotpoint Supermatic bought in 1961. That too had a 4 vane agitator working in a square tub. The "roll over" was superb. The spinner had an "eyelid" seethrough lid and it also had a swing arm drain to return suds or drain into the sink. The agitator had a red "filter clean" tray on the top and the tub was drained by a hose inserted in an opening in the rear right hand corner. When this workhorse finally died (19 years old) she replaced it with a Hotpoint 1509/05 top load automatic. Revelling in the bliss of not having to be with the machine all the time she was however Very unimpressed with the "spiraclean" agitator which created very little rollover and was just a gimmick to her. "It doesnt wash as well as my old twin tub sadly but its adequate and i can leave it while i get on with other things so i guess im happy" was always her mantra.
@WeHadOneOfThose

Morning Sy, Thanks, have enjoyed pulling these clips together, we are actually measuring washtubs between the Philips and your mums Hotpoint 1400 with regards to rollover because the Philips is deffo more energetic, saying that the Hotpoint is about 95 opm , the Servis 86opm and the Philips 120 so its more vigerous but its the question which has the rollover,, the Hotpoint Spiralator doesnt do rollover like the agitator up and down rollover turns, but washes in and out and down the tub !! Great memories of your mums washing machines !!

Nice powerful wash action, like the Hotpoint and Servis twin tubs. Although I think the Hotpoint wash action is the best of all, with the Hotpoint 'Spiraclean' agitator, it really pulls the laundry down into the tub where the agitator is most effective. I also like the Lint collector on the Hotpoint machines. Good spin speed on this Philips machine too though, for a 1960's machine.

A great video for a Saturday morning Mike! That's possibly the smoothest twin-tub I've heard and seen, the spin dryer definitely seems quieter than the Hoovermatic's. I've not seen another twinnie beside the Servis SuperTwin that has a brake arm for the spinner. Fantastic as always! Take care :)

Hello Brandon, thanks, not many of these about and I have never seen another in use ever, no one had one I knew, the spin motor is as small as a Servis but Wow, what acceleration, and braking ha ha. The arm you mention is actually the wash gyrator start, have never seen anything like , the wash motor runs all the time running the pump, the arm engaged stops the wash action but keeps the motor running, like a wringer washer etc. All good here, you take care as well !!

What a great find and bringing back many memories!! My mother's must've been a slightly later model and there were subtle differences. The water discharge arm was mainly chrome and in the top right corner of the washtub was an outlet. The wash water circulated once the wash timer was started and the filter was a large metal plate underneath but not attached to the agitator like this one. It was very effective I remember particularly it catching those pesky paper tissues that got washed!! The great feature was being able to rinse in the spin can with the pump running continuously. There was no arm across the spin can to switch it on (so maybe hers was older than this because that's an obvious safety improvement), The spinner control dial had an 'on' position for rinsing and you lowered the lid and could spin for as little or as long as you wanted. IIRC emptying the was wash tub was similar to a supermatic. Now having said all that I have just remembered how the machine was always making noise of some kind. It was never silent like a Hoovermatic because once you switched it on, similar to this one, something happened and it must've been the wash tub recirculation pump. I do recall that when my mother eventually got a Hoovermatic that was a noticeable difference, yes it was a noisier machine overall but if the wash and spin side were inactive then the Hoovermatic fell silent, unlike the Philips. It would be great to find one but almost impossible nowadays.

Hi Paul when you think about it this Philips had most things ticked regards to a great feature washer. There where a few different models some with the stand up control panel, now the last model made was a flat silver & blue control panel which looked very swish !! This has the filter under the agitator as well, neat design..

@@WeHadOneOfThose totally agree, they were never as well known as Servis, Hotpoint and of course, Hoovermatic but when compare with those Philips were almost on a league of their own and very highly rated by Which at the time. They weren't overly expensive so maybe their marketing was not up to scratch. At the time it was just mum's washing machine and the next door neighbour with her Hoovermatic seemed much more interesting!!!

Fantastic !!! 3000 RPM spin speed? Basically the laundry came out dry. This was the first major technological advance. A machine that could wash instead of the person. I remember my grandparents, happiness, when in the early 60's they washed up their first washing machine. How much effort less. In Italy, until almost 1960, he washed by hand, and women washed in the courtyards of houses, even in winter, and went to rinse their clothes in the stream. Very exhausting. In our family, the first person who bought the washing machine was my mother's sister. In 1966 he bought the Philco Bendix, practically the same as that of my videos.

Yes , later they reported it as 3,100 like the Hotpoint so whether it was always that who knows ? The joys of an automatic washer after the sink or wringer must have been immense, a lot less labour intensive, but did that time saved make them do other work ? and not relax ?
@ilfred6857

@@WeHadOneOfThose well, certainly the washing machine has greatly alleviated the efforts of women in the house, and most likely, as still happens today, when the washing machine is in operation, they can be dedicated to other activities: so yes, it is very relieved l laundry activities, but at the same time other, but less stressful, activities are performed.

@@WeHadOneOfThoseHello, Is the engine located under the centrifuge or on the side of it? If the belt does not hold it and it is immediately under the tank, then this is bad, since water can leak and get into the motor. I know many Russian washing machines (Volna, Chaika, Aurika, Sibir, Zolushka, ZVI), they have a centrifuge motor at 2800 rpm, which is located immediately under the tank, so these cars immediately burned out, water leaked out. And by the way, there is a model at 3100 rpm, also Phillips

Super fast spin drying is all very well but it creases like mad so creating loads of ironing. When i bought my second hand Bendix 7147B in 1980 i quickly realised that the 800 spin was more than adequate to not be able to wring any more water out of things like jeans and towels but very little creasing so rack or line drying everything the few creases drop out. RESULT. I only ever iron a dress shirt now. By the way i STILL have this machine in weekly use. Ive done a few large repairs on it over the years but still it goes on. My friends laugh and say "We"ll be burying you with that machine at this rate" Ha ha.

Oh thats a classic Bendix, glad youve been able to keep it going, does it have the stainless outer tub? Yes I think the smaller tubs of that era did produce creases, I use a 9kg 61ltr tub washer and max spin everything with little creasing at all, I suppose the larger surface area evens the cloths out . Nothing like a vintage Bendix for a nostalgia washday though !!
