I bought a second in fall 2022. It has a small casting pit on the base 0.5x2.5mm. There are a couple grind 1mm deep marks beveled on the top edge, finished over properly. For $325 cad w PMv2 blade it seemed a lot to pay, but I see your point as a collector. Maybe there will never be a perfect one. My choirmate used to say, "everything is never perfect."

I received mine with the same issues as yours, but I didn’t try to change, as you did it will take long time with any use.

Will Graham here. I have been watching these Videos on the Shooting plane. I would never have even looked at in the detail you looked at it. I got mine in September 2013, I think the first month they were out. So I am now sitting at my bench and looking it over and I do not see any of the “marks” yours has. There are small pits and a few edges that are tiny bruised, nothing radical. I just wanted a very good shooting plane. This was the first time I ordered for shipping from them. At this time LV had 3 Stores in my area. Down to one now. I can send a few photos by messages if you want. For me a rank amateur, this plane was a game changer for me. I love using it, but have only used it on my shooting boards. Now what I have gotten from your videos, especially on this shooting plane story, is a good lesson on what to look for when I get a new plane from any manufacturer. What is acceptable and what makes me feel bad about my purchase. So thanks 🙏

Thankful for your channel. I often check out Veritas product info even if I already own the thing. Love seeing your Hegner scroll in the background. I got one when I was ten and now I’m in my forties. Thanks mom. Hehe

Great attention to detail on the dates and meetings with them. I have been looking at buying the plane to use on their shooting board which I have been unable to use with other makers planes. I will to see if you get a good one and if I can afford the $350 for it. I agree 100% with you. Thanks for keeping us updated.

The issue is, they should’ve let you keep one of the planes AS a second! These are seconds and they seem to be unwilling to accept this. For that kind of money they need to eliminate these flaws. A LN would not have these issues, or if they did I’m sure they’d have handled t. Furthermore, you had to wait that length of time, graciously under the circumstances. I’m a bit surprised by this approach by Veritas.

These problems are really a bummer. Great products but attention to detail is PART of what makes them great. No question that they should have discounted your purchase price to a 'second' price.

Chester I was prompted to take a close look at mine, I bought it soon after it was introduced directly from the nearby store in Burnaby Canada and it does not have those marks on it.

In looking through these comments it seems like many of those who purchased the plane years ago did NOT have these marks? So has LV changed there manufacturing processes? Is the beginning of LV going the way of so many others, and lessening quality, and riding on their name? I’m staring at you Maytag, Haggar, New Balance and Hanes. And let’s not forget Craftsman.

Bought the same plane 18 months ago. Zero issues. Veritas is always quality. You spent an extreme amount of time on this, more than I ever would have.

It may be quality but not always good quality, as evidenced by what they sold at the time I purchased this. I understand that they have corrected these issues. I certainly hope they have.

I went through a few things about the Veritas Shooting Plane. I didn’t buy it because I saw some reviews saying they didn’t like the handle. I have a friend who’s own KZbin comparison between the Veritas and the Lie-Nielsen. He said the Veritas worked better than the LN. I ended up getting the LN 51 despite the cost. I love it. An old Stanley 51 today is more expensive than the LN. Someday I’ll find someone who’ll let me try the Veritas. I made a new shooting board with the Veritas Shooting Track. I really like it. Looking forward to seeing what you end up doing next with the Veritas Shooting Plane.

I have one of those planes that I bought as a factory second back in 2013 I think it was. Even as a second mine did not have those issues, and I still haven't figured out why it was a second. With speaking to a product engineer during my review of the Box Maker's Plow Plane, he mentioned they were going through some changes to increase production throughput and capacity. I'm wondering if the issues you were seeing really was due to them trying to keep up during the pandemic when they rarely had anything in stock. I guess i"m not worried about orange peeling on a sand cast item, as there's a lot of variables to that aspect of it, as long as the finish is consistent I agree, though, that it is a great plane and personally my favorite shooting plane. It's very well thought out and functionally a superior plane to the LN, in my opinion.

I would have been fine with the price of a second but they didn’t offer that. Only excuses.

@@ChetSpier Yeah, and I totally agree. For full price I expect full quality. If we let manufacturers get away with it they will gladly cut corners for bottom line and speed

@@ChetSpierinteresting because Lee Valley in my area (Halifax, N.S.) recent put on a one day sale of the Veritas tools promoted as “seconds”. The store filled up in minutes with buyers carrying one and sometimes more plane boxes. I assume that this flaw was probably in some or all of the planes but I didn’t get a chance to take a close look at them. I will be buying a #4 custom smoother and maybe a # 5 Jack. Hopefully I don’t encounter the issue you note here. ON A SEPARATE QUESTION: I posted a question on the original review of this plane and ask for your valued opinion. Would you be able to review the 3 yo video and maybe give me a response? Much appreciated.

I bought mine during the covid misery when there was very little getting through to the UK, still isn't! It was after your video and I would have cursed , if cursing was a thing I did, when I saw exactly the same marks where it looks like it was clamped. You are lucky, they cost a heck of a lot more here in the UK, where we never get a chance of purchasing seconds, and returning in the expectation of getting a perfect one was clearly not an option! I have many Veritas tools and this is the only one which has disappointed in such a way though I do feel that I spend a lot of time smoothing off machined surfaces which are asthetically distracting so those clamp marks really hurt. They are tools so I guess beauty is way down in their expectations. They have us over a barrel since nobody else is making a decent range of woodworking tools...

I agree with you Chester, there are plenty of plane manufacturers with less manufacturing defects and a lot less money. To me it’s a poor manufacturing process

I feel your pain. Lee Valley / Veritas has an excellent customer service. I hope it gets resolved to your satisfaction. I will be testing it when I make a purchase of two of their custom bench planes in the near future. As Canadian, I support Veritas because of their quality, innovation and most of all price compared to a Lie Neilson.🇨🇦👍👨‍🦳
