I've learned about him a number of years ago, and his music has been performed quite often in the past few years. Anyone who is into European classical music has known about him and his story for a number of years now. His music is quite lovely and well written. I liken him to Alexandre Dumas and his father, who truly shook the white supremacist notions of what a Black man can be and do.

If you've gotten to see the movie, I'd love to hear what you thought about it. I just saw it recently, so I won't spoil it for you. I'm grateful to learn about this important historical figure. Joseph Bologne was brilliant and deserves full accolades.

2:18 Heard rumour that was mostly due to Napoleon diminishing his legacy after he crowned himself emperor of France and brought back slavery. Note only something I heard so I'm not sure it's true (though to be honest I'd be more surprised if it weren't true).

@@ComfortCommunity it's the version of the story I've always heard. All I know for a fact is that Beethoven had admired him and was dedicating a piece to him until he heard that he'd become emperor (either way he'd taken the title of emperor which means he could no longer be called loyal to the republic of France) and so changed his dedication.

@@ComfortCommunity if it turns out I heard wrong my whole life I apologise in advance. Still, either way the main thing is that Joseph Bologne is finally getting some recognition - we know they're talking about his skills as a fencer, a violinist and a composer, people who already knew about him are just hoping that they'll bring up him being a colonel in europe's first all-black regiment.
