I have a Saturn Aura XR (3.6L); and I thank you for this video. (I realize the motors are different) I took the car to the shop for unrelated repair; then indicated a bad PCV valve, and said it is sold as an entire cover (at a cost of $ 1,104.00) I'm a senior citizen, and cannot afford that right now, but I remember in the old days- being able to pull the old one out, push the new one in. Your tips will prove to be helpful; and I am grateful. :)

About once per year i clean the pcv valve. Never had a real problem, but my engine has been consuming an increasing amount of oil. I did the modification last week, hopefully it works. My 3.6 has 153,000 miles on it.

Great video about checking PCVs. On our Land Rover Thor V8 engines there is a plastic PCV installed in the RHD side valve cover. After time it gets badly clogged. The built up pressure inside the engine blows out the rear main seal. There is a fix to remove the clogged plastic PCV and add a metal PCV to the intake manifold. This is called the “Bext4x4 PCV mod” due to the LR forum member who found and corrected this issue. Cheers from England! 🇺🇸🏴

I have a 2015 impala with the 3.6. I tried removing that pipe and mutilated it. Ended up taking it into the shop to replace the valve cover. Costly mistake. As far as I can tell, it's not a valve, it's just a tube to let the fumes be directed into the intake. I think the only thing I would do from this point is run a wire down into it to make sure it's clear, and check the hoses for sludge. It's really important to keep clean oil in these engines to prevent sludge and to keep the timing chains from losing lubrication I don't go over 4,000 miles between oil changes.

Broke off on me to, I'm going to install my part with .020 gap between the flange and cam cover so I can pry it out if need be in the future.

Thats not a bad idea yeah these things are just poorly designed im an engineer myself and i wouldnt have done what they did with that crankcase makes me think it was designed to have problems to make dealerships more $$$

Where did you end up finding the new pcv valve part? Thanks for this series, sir
@Lan-gh6tp9 күн бұрын
what if I only replace the easy one? I couldn't pry out the one in the back, and don't like to hammer my air intake manifold.

My '17 Terrain just ran a code for PVC valve, but this is exactly what I was afraid of... is this a novice DIY project? My oil consumption had increased and Idk if the seal is damaged bcuz I'm not seeing any drip or stains underneath.

Broke the pcv valve lol The only problem I found on a 2015 traverse is the power steering hose sits on top of the valve cover. Buy fluid before if you don’t have any. I didn’t see any other way had to disconnect from filler tank.

Looks nothing like my 2nd gen traverse. So I'm not even sure if this applies to my 3.6.

Just add another pvc valve in the middle of the valve cover and t it into the existing pvc valve

Did oil consumption reduce after carrying out the modifications ?
@FixYourCar-Eric9 ай бұрын
So far it has stopped I'll be posting another few videos next week going over the oil change itself and all the work that went into it as well as the cost that I saved DIY vs what a shop would have charged me for all the work I did. So, stay tuned!

Hey Eric. I changed mine. My Engine Cover is plastic and I put a metal replacement. Is that bad?

What year is this vehicle you are working on?
@jeanpierreremond25658 ай бұрын
What year is your SUV. I found on a different KZbin video that on 2014 an Up the PCV isn't serviceable or its part of the valve cover (I'm not sure about that). I damaged the metal ring on the pcv valve that connects the plastic clamp trying to remove my pcv. Now I ended with a air leak, check engine light on P0174 code and RPM up and down because the air leak 😢

Even if it isn't serviceable it needs to be taken off and cleaned. The non serviceable ones are just a bad they isolate the valve cover area and lots of sludge buildup clogging that pcv regardless so need to take off the valve cover. Wish this wasn't the case but genius gm engineers thought so
@FixYourCar-Eric7 ай бұрын
Yeah, that is correct PCV Valve even in the newer supposedly non serviceable one gets slugged up and needs removed so going to have to take off that valve cover unfortunately.

Engineers are runnng too thin of an oil and causing problems like the dark sludge/carbon buildup inside the valve cover. That's what's plugging the orifice. Go to a 10 weight thicker oil to help ring seal and a good syn oil. Plug a Manometer(35.00 bucks) into the dipstick tube for troubleshooting this problem and at the same time make sure you're getting 1-2inHG hot at idles. Dino oil cooks at a lower temp and this oil is stressed by temperature at first impression. All PCV valves and Breathers should have a baffle keeping liquid oil away from them. Not sure why this isn't baffled or it's not shown in this video. IMHO

No problem im learning more and more about these 3.6s as i tinker with them I wasn't aware they made an update nor did i see that in the repair manual but none the less its working good now that PCV valve even though it was a hole was still pretty nasty and don't think it would breath well at all. Which was probably why my oil consumption was up. Doesnt seem to be using as much oil now
