Soon as I got my 2003 S10 LS 4.3 with only 7,200 mi. I heard about dexcool problems, so before it had a chance to get this bad I took it to a professional radiator shop where they recommended I do a chemical back flush of the whole system getting rid of as much if not all the dexcool, then they replaced the thermostat and changed the coolant to regular green glycol coolant. I now have over 86K on the engine and the cooling system has been trouble free -- so far, but I do have a mysterious vacuum leak and I fear its the intake gaskets. These trucks are also known for heater core problems and thats a huge job on these trucks requiring the whole dashboard be removed, a real PITA. These repairs are my next fears, a radiator and water pump swap would be a walk in the park compared to the heater core and intake gasket jobs.

I got a slight manifold leak that only leaks in the morning. I am sure i will have to go through this in the near future. i already replaced my radiator and hoses along with the flush so that should save me some dollas. But all in all it will be a good learning experience for me as im sure it was for you. These videos not only give people a heads up but also shows that you can work on your own vehicle without paying a grease monkey $75 per hour. $75 x 18 hrs = $ 1350 you saved. Right on! thanks man!
@eyetotheworld9 жыл бұрын
rubal626 Thanks Rubal! I hope that it is working out for you. Morning leak only sounds wierd, but, as things heat they expand. This could be causing a seal once your engine "warms up." Good luck, and take it easy.
@x-man50566 жыл бұрын
Don't dis mechanics. They don't pocket $75/hr., not even half. If they brake a bolt or job takes more than standard hours, out of their pockets. If it leaks still for some reason, they do it over for free. They spend all day long bent over cars that owners can't even bother with prevent maintenance and have to work on grimy shit all day, everyday. Show some respect. It's a tough, honorable profession. There are bad apples, just like doctors, lawyers, bankers and whatever you do.

Guys if you are thinking about doing this don't wait! Mine was just a very minor leak and one day on the way home my engine sputtered out. The gasket finally gave way and all my coolant Poured into the lifter valley. Huge PIA to clean up all the contaminated oil plus you could blow your head gasket at the same time.

Mine was loosing coolant but I could never locate the source. Then one day on a short trip to the store motor got up to 240 degrees. I had coolant in my drivers door jam.

A trick to remove the fan is to put your wrench on the bolt (while the fan pulley is still bolted to the engine) and hit the wrench with a rubber hammer. It’ll shock it loose a lot of the time
@sweetkellymay8 жыл бұрын
To take off the fan. Keep the serpentine belt on. Put a large adjustable wrench on the big nut. Get a big heavy bar. Smack the wrench as hard and as fast as you can, "counter-clockwise" This will break it loose..

I had the same issue with the alternator. It appeared to be held in the bracket with locking fasteners of some sort and I ended up removing the entire bracket with the alternator still attached. What it really needed was to be pried out with a pry bar and removing the bracket was a waste of time..... but rewarding, not really.

big MISTAKE. Get rid of the dexcool and go back to the old fashioned green stuff.
@littlewazz6 жыл бұрын
the problem lies in the design of the radiator cap, when GM came out with DEXcool at the same time the radiator caps have a flaw with the OEM caps they would stick partially open allowing air to enter the cooling system causing the coolant to coagulate, get an an after market radiator cap like a Stant
@x-man50566 жыл бұрын
Keep the DexCool. Get a new radiator cap. Green anti-freeze not good for mixed iron and aluminum coolant passages and doesn't last as long either.

Hey Eye. Great vidio and thanks. I have heard that the dex cool may be the cause of the corrosion. with in my research some people have converted to normal glicol based antifreez/coolant and have had good results with in there GM engins. Do you have to drain the radiator? Also, how did you work around not taking off the ac bracket. That's the only thing holding me back. Never mind, you explained but there's one screw I can't seem to get to for the life of me on that bracket. Edit: Went to Lowe's and bought a snub 14in wrench. $4 if you're planning on buying it. Bad gasket? Does the Blazer drive with a bad intake manifold gasket?
@BIGxJIMxSLADE6 жыл бұрын
Mine drove for several months, with coolant disappearing regularly. No drips on ground, no smoke, nothing to show a leak. It wasn't until it REALLY went, and my coolant and oil mixed, that you IMMEDIATELY know there is a problem. In the process of doing the intake manifold gasket now. I came here to get some info on removing the upper plenum. Since the lower plenum has oil/carbon in the injector area now, I was thinking of taking the lower to a shop to have it cleaned all out, as I have no parts washer/place to dump chemicals.

If you own an s10 Blazer/s15 Jimmy, quit using the Dexcool. Use the green one that says: For GM trucks pre-1995. It doesn't matter if your particular GM truck is not pre-1995, the green coolant won't corrode your engine cooling system. If you're currently running it using orange Dexcool, drain your cooling system, flush it a few times, clean the gunk, then use the green Prestone or the equivalent generic green coolant.
