Chevy Cruze E / Parking Brake Adjustment

In this video ill show you how to force adjust the first generation Chevy Cruze emergency / parking brake. This is supposed to be self adjusting but if yours is feeling soft your should try this! You will need a 7mm socket and a long flathead screwdriver that helps. If you have drum brakes you need to adjust those first. I hope this video at least helps in understanding how this thing works.

Thank you for posting, huge help. Thanks to you I saw I didn't even need to remove a screw, just slip an 1/8" thick piece of plastic under the back of the console till I felt the part moving as I raised and lowered the brake, then a solid push forward and it clicked a few times, now it's adjusted perfect, however I suspect that the need for adjustment is just a warning that the shoes or pads are about worn out.

This handbrake mechanism is identical to that on the Vauxhall/Opel Astra J. Only difference is you don't need to remove the whole console, just lift up the handbrake gaiter. A forked pry bar may be good for this job.

I just stuck mine. I need the e-brake in winter so i really don't want to cut it. Maybe if i lube them mechanisms behind the drum and try to over adjust your way ?!

@@Naomi.H.85 there should be a plastic clip you pull up on inside the same area (armrest) to release it from being over Tight.

If you have rear drums make sure there adjusted out right. Wire brush the threads if you can on that rod

u dont have to do all that there's a hole in the bottom of center console insert put your E Break down stick a flat head screwdriver to push the disengage switch to let the spring fully extend take up slack supposed to be done when ever rear brakes are changed

Mr95Kenny, tried your procedure to adjust the handbrake but got no good fortune.Just like to add that the car has a disc brake system.Last year,The Afghan mechanic definitely opened up the centre console to adjust the handbrake.Fairplay to the Afghan mechanic but surely Chevrolet cars must be very scarce in Afghanistan.

Maybe you have a broken cable, have you jacked the rear end up, pulled the brake, and check to see if both wheels lock up?

@@Mr95Kenny I think the cable is fine because if the handbrake goes above six clicks it does work.It has eight or nine clicks by my reckoning. Just get the feeling that the answer lies past the two torx screws,where the small plate and the squashed spring are situated.Loosened the two torx screws but their bracket can only move a fraction back or forward and that was no help.

Seen a video made in Spanish where the chap has that small plate lifted which is just past the two torx screws.The video doesn't show how he went about lifting that metal plate.Then he placed a wooden piece behind the "T" plate which you were pushing in your video. Eventually he goes on to push the "T" plate forward thus reducing the travel and clicks.

My mom's chev cruze is currently parked in the garage, she can't drive it, the rear wheel are jammed, they are not rotating at all, if you press the pedal a little harder while on reverse, the back of the car jutst lifts up almost stretching the rear shocks to their limit, what could be the cause of that?
