Yeah, I have to agree with most everyone else here... This is one of the most well made videos on KZbin and it speaks to me as I just received my 4L80E mated to newly rebuilt NP205, by Gearstar. Gonna get this installed behind my stroker 396 that I just finished also. Thanks for the info! Great job!

I am about to do the exact same swap in my 1978 Chevy Scottsdale 4x4. I am looking for a transmission and case now and am starting to put together the game plan to have this put together. I'm gonna brag a tiny bit here, sorry... First thing, awesome upgrades! It looks clean and well done! You shouldn't have any issues with those parts, they're tough as nails! Ok, I put a 4l80e behind a ZZ4 350 in my 1970 3 door suburban... no tps, or anything else. I went with a manual control box from Jake's Performance transmission out of Tx. It's a little black box about 3"x3" and 1" thick with a short pigtail that plugs into the trans. There's 3 other wires, a power, ground and torque converter lock up, but that's it for electronics! The only downside is you have to shift through the gears... meaning, if you're at a stop sign with the trans in drive which would be overdrive if you were humming down the highway, from a stop your in OD. So ya gotta drop into 1st gear and as ya go along 2nd then 3rd then drive. Obviously no clutch is necessary. You get used to it pretty quick. I let my kids and close friends drive it and they do fine without any practice. Now my truck is a pretty gnarly offroad rig so it works great for me. The torque converter lock up is switch controlled which means you can engine break like down shifting in a manual transmission. It's pretty great. There are little details that help the internals last forever like swapping the thrust washers with torrington style thrust bearings and billet forward clutch, alto reds, kolene steels, and most of all a big ol' cooler! All the other stuff, adapters, trans lines and shift linkage etc. is similar enough. Except for a 203 range box in front of the 205 t-case.
@J4riel

Awesome stuff! I had a 65 el Camino and shifted it for about 10 yrs, so when I swapped trans in this rig I was def looking to not think about shifting anymore. The computer was pricey but looking back to 4 yrs ago I am still glad I went with it. These trans are awesome! And the OD is way worth the swap!!

Thanks for the Nicely Done Video. The audio was really clear & I didn't have to adjust the speed! Also, your lighting was great & it's amazing how a clean setup really helped your presentation. Now that I've got all the A-V production covered. I came to this video looking for ideas about how to deal with my 71 Blazer which a previous owner has definitely made a unique setup. This one has a 400 V8, with a 3spd Saginaw transmission. As you might guess it did not take long for that Saginaw to fail in this beast because it also has a ridiculous lift kit, badly oversized tires & drive shafts that are definitely not true. Having owned, and generally like the 1990s-early 2000s model trucks, Suburban specifically, I have been considering this kind of swap. I'm not someone who is adverse to having computers on board, I prefer to just take everything out of a suburban and re-swapping into this Blazer. Your installation of the 4L80E, I think is what I'm looking for. I'd like to find out if it makes up to this 400, for starters. Anyway if you or anybody reading this has some thoughts, shoot a reply. And thanks again for your excellent video.

Thank you for the kind remarks. I just hit record on the old iPhone and away I went lol. I don’t have patience for video editing so I try and knock it all out really fluent and clean the first time. As far as a 4l80e bolting up to a 400 sbc, I think it would bolt up fine but you would have to make sure the flex plate played well with both pieces. I can’t say for certain, I hope someone else can chime in on this one and verify.👍👍

Doing the same, 6.2 diesel with 205 figure 8 TC. It has a TH400 . 1 ton so cross member is different. Going to move engine forward to accommodate the additional length. I have three driveshafts, the third being a PTO so keeping the TC fixed makes it much easier. The TPS is a stock GM unit. Advanced Adapter, the TC is already modified so just chopping the output shaft and plug the rear lube hole in the transmission. The truck has 4.56 axles, even with 33" tires, it spins out at 73 MPH. 11 mpg with the diesel. 34k miles, all original.

That sounds like an M1031 truck. I have one too! Dont pull the engine forward. Do it right and have the shafts refit. Supposedly i have read that you can take a 2wd trans which already has the rear VSS no matter what year you get. Then you just chop the output shaft to the correct length. Need to confirm that because it is cheaper and eliminates having to do a full teardown for the rear reluctor.

@@affordabledcgenerators1607 This engine bay was designed for the 250/292 inline sixes. V8s were moved far aft for weight balance. Since this truck has a heavy permanent load, moving the engine forward is a good thing. It has a 280 frame Lima MAC PTO driven generator in the bed plus a 7 CFM Champion compressor and a fully enclosed work body. Right now, 8600 pounds.

@@keithjurena9319 Cool! CUCV trucks are the best. I think the manufacturer just kept the trans and tcase in the same location. Both bellhousings are going to land in the same spot. The V8 just appears to be further back. Im just advocating that as you are now going to run into clearance issues with a mechanical fan or resale if someone looks at the engine being moved forwards. Thats all.

Is it possible to swap a 6L80 Transmission behind a Classic 350 SBC? I could use a 700r4 a turbo 400, or a turbo 350. However I like the extended gear ratio range offered by the 6L80 with the extra gears. Thanks for any thoughts or advice.
@J4riel
@J4riel 6 ай бұрын
The 6L80 was built for the LS platform so it ‘should’ bolt up to the small blocks fine. But I think that’s where the easy part stops and all the research and adapters and buying this and that just to make it work would be a pain. I read where the 6L80’s were never really made for drive by cable so trying to mate that thing up to a carb setup might be a PITA. In my research in the past, if you are going to try and run a small block but ditch the carb to mimick the LS platform in the intake area you’ll be ahead to just go straight to the LS motor swap or use a 4L80 as I did. Hope that helps.

It was the first bolt I tried starting, finger tighted the others came back to it and it was still off. Verified TC and flexplate was in line and nothing jammed or seated wrong. Pulled other bolts out to switch them around verifying all bolts were the same. Spun the TC around to try other mounts and got the same thing on same flexplate hole, others lined up fine again. After about an hr messing with this, I just chocked it up to maybe a flexplate hole drilled slightly off and just took a dremel to it. @@J4riel I’m in SC so that’s way to far but I still plan to do this. I’ve actually been kicking the idea around for a while now. Glad to see someone has actually done it. I feel like the SBC is more than good enough so I don’t really see much reason to LS swap my trucks but I’m sick and tired of 700’s and 4l60’s. The 4l80e has got to be better in every way than a 700/4l60. Pretty sure the gear ratios are better as well

Hey Ron, I can give you a rough estimate on the items. This was done towards the end of 2018, so with all the inflation bullshit nowadays it may be a lot more. I switched to a NP205 so theres more cost involved in that like machining and new sticks to control and such, but heres a quick list. Computer controller = $1000 2 new drivelines = $1200 14 qts trans fluid = $125 (I had the 4L80e rebuilt =$1700) you'll be looking for a different crossmember and might have some exhaust rework needed to fit too. I went this route instead of gear vendor. I wasnt too keen on that whole setup.

what is the purpose of a twin even a trip stick setup for your transfer case?
@J4riel
@J4riel 4 жыл бұрын
Allows you to independently shift the front and rear differential. Example, you can use only the front axle and put the rear is neutral so you can make very tight corners. It allows you to put the rear in low gear without the front axle, allowing you to poke and crawl around without all 4 wheels. There are probably other pros that folk could chime in with. The stick setup will not allow you to shift one axle in high and one in low, so no worry there. I can’t elaborate on a trip stick, I’ve never heard of one.

I got a 4x4 4L80e as well. What I know I had to do was get a rear speed sensor installed in the trans because late model trucks they get the speed information from transfer case. I actually got pretty lucky and took that trans, 205 t-case and the adapter kit to my local trans shop and they basically hook it all up for me. At the time $2000 cash. Does the compushift computer allow for "semi-manual" mode so you can make it go through the gears with a stick if you need to?
@J4riel
@J4riel 5 жыл бұрын
Jeffrey Cronk if you manually shift it to 1st it’ll stay there. So if you have like a ratchet shifter and you bang through the gears the computer will know you are manually shifting and let you have it until you put it back into D.
