Just a thought, a 6" round, 6' long black PVC pipe makes a nice 8 gallon roof mounted shower. mount it to the rack, add a hose nipple to fill it and add a shower head, longer shower ! Plus it will be hotter as it will always be in the sun heating up. or make it a 6' long "U" shaped pipe for 16 gallons. . . . great video too, gave me lots of ideas for my Suburban. Thanks for posting/sharing.

The price of used vans keeps going up and up since so many people want to go camping in them. My budget it limited and just last week i was thinking of a 4x4 Suburban, Xterra, Forester, Highlander. Most of them are less expensive than a van these days and like you folks, I can go a lot more places and look stealth in a neighborhood because it's more family friendly style vehicle. Thanks for showing this. The side storage unit on the left is neat!

I have a 99 GMC Suburban I've named "Liberator" because having it got my family out from under a horrible slumlord. While liberated we were homeless but able to survive. Now I actually own land in Colorado and I manage my mom's land in Arkansas. Due to work now I still depend on my Suburban as shelter while away from home. It's a little easier now because it's just me. My family stays home. But I've never built out the back. My space is a little smaller since we still need the two back seats just behind the passenger and driver seats. But I can still lay in the back just fine. I like the style of your shelf space. But if I do something like that I might use the EPS foam to make them. Just learned about making strong but lightweight cabinets and shelves out of that stuff. And everything I put in there needs to be easily removable. I still have to move building materials from time to time. Love your ideas and tips. And that they are for a suburban and not vans. It was very helpful and gave me some ideas for my own space. Thanks!

I have NEVER seen anyone design, build and retrofit a vehicle to such custom, space-saving utilization. Fcuking brilliant! The fridge in front, the side storage wall, the snug fit window treatments. If it wasn't for the coffin box and the bikes (and dead guy shovel), that could sit in a Walmart parking lot unnoticed - more so than a van! The tri fold bed with accessible storage and the KILLER front slider lock box are well thought out. I do like the lounger concept - something I'm building into my "vamper" The idea being, daytime the bed folds at at 33% to form the reversed 45* lean back portion. The box that the lower 33% sits on would be the bench seat//storage. If, in the day, someone were to look in, it's seems like a daytime work space not a "I LIVE IN HERE" van. I might borrow your fridge and slider lock box concepts. The low profile of the mattress is good but for me, the LOUNGE ROOM concept is the main idea so the bed will be a wee bit higher than a milk crate. I figure im horizonal when I sleep so I dont need the vertical height.

Hi Kat & Craig!!!! I’m currently converting my 2004 Suburban. I’m using your build as inspiration. I’ve used this truck to drive across the USA & Canada 3 months each summer. I’m upgrading from tent camping 🙃. I took the back rt. Panel off that houses the AC hardware. Im trying to figure out if I can install a cabinet there or if I should put a cabinet there. Do you find it useful to leave the original panel in place? Also, do you notice that there’s less cool air radiating from the rt. vs lt. of your cargo area? I have both panels out & was thinking of insulating it. I’m so excited about my conversion. Thanks for all the guidance! Apryl
@KatCarney6 жыл бұрын
Hi Apryl! I don't think we've noticed any difference in cool air radiating from one side vs. the other. We have the original panel in place that goes over the AC unit and we removed the panel and the whole sound system, basically. The sound system was garbage anyway, and the extra space has been really useful. Let us know how your build goes! We love seeing people out on the road with similar set ups! People have stopped us several times and showed up their burbs that are modeled after ours and it's so cool! We should have a build out burb convention!

great! does the battery charge off the alternator, too? i've found the alternator to be a better source of power than solar. we got the fridge in the back of our nissan nv200 and have 3" of foam over it for our feet and 8" for the rest of a full width, queen height mattress. but we are not nearly the adventurers with our lil van. it would never go where your truck does. we just summer camp. but it is so cool to be able to just decide, hit the supermarket, and gooo.

Great job on your Suburban set up! I watched your video with great interest. I am doing a similar build on my 94 Diesel Suburban. Love the tri-fold mattress and cabinet set up! Is the mattress DIY? What is next on your wish list?
@KatCarney8 жыл бұрын
we bought the mattress on Amazon and cut it to fit. The cover is nice for keeping it together when we fold it, but other than that I image some blocks of foam would work. It's very comfortable! On the wish list...well, Craig wants to cut off the roof and put on a high top. I do not. I think it's kind of perfect how it is!
@MrTullomania8 жыл бұрын
Sounds like Craig wants more headroom, which I can relate to. However, that is quite an involved project, and one that I too thought of but ruled out due to complexity and unintended consequences (i.e. leaks, squeaks and general loss of structural rigidity). I chose to instead focus on a more elaborate roof rack option for storage of gear combined with the addition of a large sunroof allowing me and passengers to access the roof rack from inside the cab. Are you going to post more videos soon?

That's so cool! I just stumbled on this while doing research on Suburbans. I love Suburbans, have since I was a kid. Since I got into mountainbiking camping trips last year, it's been floating around in my head that it's be cool to pick up a used Sub to use as a bike hauler/camper. It never occurred to me that others had already done this (and so well, in your case!). Right now I have an '07 Volvo XC70 wagon, which would prob do in a pinch (it works well at holding the bikes and gear, but with all the gear there's no room to sleep IN it). I've also been really wanting to do in extended road trip in a camper type vehicle with my bikes...there's SO many great riding spot in the US I want to check out (and my 9-5 job is killing me lately, haha). According to the video you were nine weeks out on your trip at this time.... are you still traveling, and if so, what do you do to support yourselves? Living off savings, or are you able to work wherever you are? That's my big obstacle, I'd hate to run through all my savings doing this. Then again, it's only money! :D

HI guys, enjoyed the video and its amazing how you used every possible area of real estate. I just bought a 2002 Chevy Suburban Z71 1500 from a government auction (sight unseen) that looks identical to yours. I was a little disappointed how small it was, was expecting it to be much bigger. It only has 73K miles on it though. I was wondering if you could provide more details on your leveling kit and the tires? Also how has the ride quality been after the leveling kit on the highway. This vehicle won't really be serving as an overland vehicle so ride quality is kind of important.
@KatCarney6 жыл бұрын
We got torsion bars keys and 1.5 in rear spacers. Honestly, the ride has firmed up a little on the front end, no noticeable change on the back end. We have had to replace both the front and the back end, and this is our first suburban so we don't have much to compare to.

Bed platform is 5in...any higher and you will have no head room. Not sure of the side cabinet dimensions right now. Can go measure later.

Thank to this utube video I am doing almost the same thing to my 2004 2500 Burban. I am selling a 21 foot camper because it is only me now and doing this will fit me perfectly for weekend camping. I have a few questions about the solar set up and finding someone to install it for me. I live in Colorado Springs, CO and we have had some really bad hail storms this past year and I want to find a way to install the solar panels and be able to cover them from hail or be able to remove them to store when I am using her as my daily driver. I don't have alot of money so I am doing as much as I can with easy to find things and that I don't have to have it in the truck every day.

Get the panels that we linked in the description, hail would definitely not effect them. they ripped off our roof going 70 and were fine.

I agree with Craig, ours are the more expensive, flexible panels, but so much more durable than the rigid ones. Link in description.

The entire solar system in-depth? That is ambitious.

I have a Yukon SLT and been trying to decide if I should replace the headlights w/ something brighter. I like the light bar idea! Where did you get your lightbar and how hard is it to wire up?

Change transmission fluid and engine oil often. Make sure you have a trans cooler.

That's a very nice conversion. Another vehicle possibility is the new VW Atlas. It's not cheap, but far less costly than an RV. And, it looks just like what it is: a big SUV. So, you would likely be welcome in places where RVs are excluded. And both rows of back seats will fold flat, making it easier to convert. And it would not be difficult to create a design where the conversion components are easily removable, should would simply want to use it as a 7-passenger vehicle.

Good ideas for my 2006 yukon. Wish it had more headroom - putting clothes on inside takes finagling. ! Thanks for taking the time.
@KatCarney8 жыл бұрын
Yea, headroom is our only real issue, but we can relax comfortably lounging against the side. It is a little difficult to change clothes or cook inside.

You'd think GM would have a tall or 'pop-up' version of Suburban.

we considered doing a high top ourselves, but have ruled it out for the time being
