I never owned a DOD 5.3, (LM7) but I ran a texas speed 223 cam, lifters, an air intake, and a 3200 circle D converter on the stock exhaust with a bear mailbox 93 tune on my Z71 Tahoe. And it ran with stock and bolt-on early gen SRT jeeps with no problems. So with your mods on the newer platform, it should make for a great daily driver.

I would only do the engine mods and keep the suspension the way it is. I would only update the sway bar like in the Vic and put some new heavy duty shocks in in. After that the PPV will last to about 350,000 or more. I’ve seen mileage that high and was amazed they still sounded great.

These 5.3 motors are notorious for there lifter problems. As long as the rest of the vehicle is in good condition I buy up all of these I can find usually paying 2500 to 3500 back of private party book. I pay $450 for the complete rebuild kit and I have a guy that installs it for $225. I have done 27 of them so far all with between 85000 and 11200 miles on them.

The results will vary, two major factors are which cam you choose as well as who does the tune after all the mechanical work is completed. Yes its a large improvement over stock! after 3000 RPM the truck really pulls hard. a lot harder then the 5.6 Liter in my other Truck.

Let me know how this turns out ? In 1962 my dad bought a 1957 Chevy that was a PPV, the state of Tennessee would not sale car with fuel injected engine. He got car it had 2 barrel carb. I was 15 when he bought the car. I got a learner's permit to drive. In 2 months I had destroyed clutch & some how broke a piston ring. I had to pay to have it fixed. That car had a truck axle under it. If I could l would be doing same thing to a PPV.

it amazes me how, having owned Fords, Chevys (and GMC's), Dodges, Hondas, and Nissans, how they all do things differently enough that being proficient on one doesn't necessarily mean you are with the others. Likewise having the tool to remove something on one doesn't mean you have the tool for the other.

Awesome Video Chris, I am highly anticipating the video that I'm sure you will make on how the DoD delete and the rest of the modifications go. I have been contemplating doing the DoD delete to my Tahoe for some time now, though I will probably end up waiting until it becomes a serious problem. It would be much appreciated if you could share the total cost of the rebuild when it is finished. What a score from the auction, I remember seeing it on the auction page just a few weeks ago. In fact, I actually bought my Tahoe from the same auction many months ago. That is actually how I found your channel, after I found the what is my current vehicle I began doing some research on govt auctions, the first video of yours I watched was one of the crown vic videos and in the intro when you said you bought it from the Delaware surplus auction I was both surprised and happy. Since Delaware is such a small state I never expected anyone to post any information on it. Your channel was extremely helpful in the specifics of that auction, so for that thank you. I can't wait for more videos to come.
@hullinger6 жыл бұрын
Cool story and thanks for sharing about finding my channel and buying your Tahoe. There was a DE auction this past spring where four Tahoe's were being sold. All were 4WD and I think all were black too. Were one of those your truck? I think I was there videoing the Caprices so I didn't spend much time on the SUV's. As for a follow-up vid on the Tahoe, yeah, look for it. Might take a few weeks to get the truck back but I'll certainly go through what's involved and costs too. And I agree that it's probably best to wait on the DOD delete. I'm told that one of the first signs is that you'll get a very slight ticking sound when the engine is cold. Sounds like an exhaust leak. You might even see high oil use too so keep an eye on the oil level. -Chris
@twosixtyseven2676 жыл бұрын
Yes, one of the black ones is mine, there were three black ones and one silver one in that auction. I believe that they were all 2012 or similar. They were all 4WD which was a requirement for me. I had some decisions to make on which one I wanted to pursue, the silver one had some body damage and I was looking mostly for a black one, one of the black ones had nearly bald tires and had a very slight top end noise, the other one threw some airbag codes when I scanned the computer and when looking over the service records that the state provided for each of the trucks it also had some charging system issues. And the last one I looked at ended up being the best of the bunch and later became my truck. I also later learned that all four had belonged to DNREC, they were the rangers trucks. I remember seeing and briefly looking at the 4 or 5 caprices that they had on the lot. I have done extensive research on the AFM/DoD issues that the Tahoes are susceptible to, from what I have learned I got lucky, I have no knock nor any oil consumption issues especially considering I have 125,xxx miles on the truck now. However, sometime in the (hopefully distant) future, I expect to have those issues as most say that it is inevitable. Ever since owning my first car I have made it a habit to check all of my fluids whenever I fuel up. Thanks for the added info. -Don
@hullinger6 жыл бұрын
That's cool and it's nice you got to see the service records. I remember looking at those trucks and one had a ton of sand and pine needles inside the front passenger wheel well, right behind the front bumper. Made me think DNREC too. Oh, be sure to check the trans cooler line where it goes into the radiator. I recall one or two of those trucks were leaking at that fitting.

Oh, yea! As soon as I heard the engine I knew it was a lifter noise! I've had a LOT of experience with GM lifters. The worst episode was back in the 80’s, a couple of friends and I went camping up in the N. H. Mountains along the Kancamangus highway in a beat up 1967 Pontiac LeMans Convertible, that had well and over 100k on its original 326 V8. In the morning after we checked down the mountain and go off for some coffee when I started the car in the extream cold and had a backfire, then it ran very rough with the same noise as the Tahoe. We ended up driving all the way back to R. I. Only to find when we took off the driver's side valve cover, a bent pushrod! That, of course, was not opening that intake valve enough. I guess that's why we made it so far, as an exhaust valve would have created too much heat! So I bought one pushrod and the cover gasket and all was fine. I've also have been looking at the PPV vehicles locally at a used car dealer, that specializes in going to the auctions, buying the best of them and putting on his lot! He even has a great gang of techs that'll fix/modify them in any way! I have a standing request for a 4x4AWD Tahoe, with not too many miles on it as long as its a 4x4. Especially if it needs an engine! I want to build a budget RST Tahoe of my own! I'll spend the money on a new crate LS motor and controller. The best part if those PPV Tahoe a, are the equipment they come with that the public can't get. Like the 3:73 auto locking rear diff. Also HD suspension and bigger brakes, with the bigger oil and trans coolers and radiator, along with around 200 amp alternator to HD electronic systems. Some even come with the heavy push bars up front or the HD separator with sort of roll bar. Not to mention the big bucket seats and heavy vinyl upholstery and floors! I'll have mine painted in a nice deep pear white, with a blue under shadow to support the idea it was a Police vehicle before. Good luck with yours. Time? I'll have at large last 450 hp!

For future reference Lt1swap.com tells exactly what factory GM parts to use to delete the AFM. He also reprograms Pcms to delete the AFM for $50. I understand you wanted a performance cam/tune so this will not apply to you. Also I would HIGHLY recommend a High volume oil pump such as the Melling 10296. I have had these Tahoes with severe top end lifter noise. A new HVOP completely eliminated that.

Right when this video started i knee it was the lifter. These engines are prone to lifters going out and excessive oil use. Eventually with my suburban when the lifter decides to go out i spoke with a shop about dropping a new engine in it, no point in rebuilding the origional because the new engine they will drop in it is the same engine but the block is redesigned by chevy fixing the lifter and excessive oil use problem they quoted me in the range of $8,000, for the engine, taxes and the manual labor to have it installed.

Looks like you lucked out a little! Question, do they have any Chevy Express extended 3500 vans at these auctions? because I'm looking!
@hullinger6 жыл бұрын
Hey man, thanks for your comment and for checking out my Tahoe video. I've seen vans at this surplus auction but 9 out of 10 are Fords. Mostly E350's. Most of the time they're in pretty nice condition and so they sell for big bucks too. I recall one being 10 years old, super low miles like 27K selling for $10K. -Chris

Getting rid of the DOD, great idea. Is that cam a higher torque profile? The additional horse power is is cool, but that type of vehicle is a work horse where more torque really shows "Its Stuff". Not only is it a great people mover, but a good utility platform for towing and hauling. Looking forward to the follow on movie on the outcome of your mods. Just a tidbit of info, my Silverado (5.3L) is closing in on a quarter million miles and has not needed any unscheduled maintenance as of yet. Those LS motors just run and run.....Ross
@hullinger6 жыл бұрын
Hey man. Quarter million miles is amazing. That's like Crown Vic territory. As for the cam in this DOD kit, I used a slightly larger cam in a small block Chevy years ago. The power came on at around 2200 RPM. I didn't really study this new cam much since it's small and I'm figuring the power will come on earlier. Plus I'm figuring the 3.73 rear will help too. Fingers crossed that it all works as planned. I'm amazed though by how much these engines response to cam and exhaust. Gobs of potential. Thanks for watching and following along! -Chris

You be around the 350 to 375 range put a shift kit in the trans as well if it's got the 4l60e or 4l65e they won't last. The l80e is where it's at but if it's got the l80 fo a shift kit anyway make it last.
@hullinger6 жыл бұрын
Thanks man, I appreciate the advice on the trans. Getting better shifts with a shift kit is one of the things I wanted to do anyways. Probably sooner than later, now. -Chris

Nice Tahoe PPV! Are you going to do DOD delete for your Caprice PPV?
@hullinger6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking out my Tahoe video. And yeah, the plan is to do the DOD delete on the Caprice too, BUT..., that's gonna have to wait until I can sell some cars first. I'm just plain out of $$$. The problem is that I'm getting afraid to drive the Caprice 'cause I don't want to cause anymore damage. I'm told the block is aluminum so it's much more delicate than the engine in the Tahoe.
@harysuper6 жыл бұрын
East Coast Classics I’ll have to keep that in mind when I get one! I hope to get one someday haha. Regardless when I purchase one I’m going to budget some extra cash to do the DOD delete. Keep up the great and detailed videos on these cars!

Hey Geoff, great to hear from ya. I saw a red SS just this morning and it made me think of you. What color G8 did you get so I can look out for you? And yeah, I don't yet know what the long-term plans are for the Tahoe but we can talk more. -Chris
@geoffcoburn51626 жыл бұрын
It's grey, currently on tiny Camaro 18" wheels, eventually I need to swap the headlights due to them being fogged over and I'd like to find two replacement CTS-V wheels which were given to me with the car, but a pair of them are cracked. I ended up trading the SS in on a bright blue Colorado Z71 crew cab with the Duramax diesel option. Original plan was to flip the G8, but we'll see...I kind of like it aside from the minor issues it has but that's what happens when you get a 10 year old car!
@hullinger6 жыл бұрын
Geoff Coburn I’ll look for ya on the streets. I’ve seen PPV’s with CTS-V wheels and it looks really clean. You got any mods planned; exhaust, cam....?
@geoffcoburn51626 жыл бұрын
well, it's got a Vararam over-the-rad intake, and an axleback currently, but once the VW Rabbit project is finished up (just need windshield and exhaust finally!) I'd love to do a cam w/ the LSA blower from BoostDistrict (which is prooooobably what you should also do for the PPV!) Although realistically I have to do house projects so it'll be stock haha

@hullinger5 жыл бұрын
Brotha, I'm sooo nasty, bitter about the Tahoe PPV. It's been over 5 months since I bought that truck at auction. I sent it to my buddy's shop right after getting it, order the parts right away and then she sat. I call every 2-3 weeks or so and I get the same answer, that it's getting worked on. Last I heard the heads were rebuilt but the reassembly still isn't done. I was promised 2 other times now that it would be done. Then again, the Tahoe was supposed to have been done by this weekend. Well, that didn't happen either. It all leaves me pretty pissed, not just about the truck but out a long-time friendship being seriously damaged.

@hullinger6 жыл бұрын
I'd love to get me a police Explorer. I've only seen one come up at the auction and it was beat. The air bags were removed, the front clip was repainted and the paint match was horrendous and also it had no battery and so I couldn't check anything electronic on the truck. It wasn't even worth looking at. I really do want one though. -Chris

Gotcha I myself have been trying to find a Tahoe PPV curious to learn what DE State Auctions you attend.
@hullinger6 жыл бұрын
The State uses an online service through USgovBid to handle their bidding. They give an inspection period the day before the auction ends. In fact, Del. DOT auction is ongoing right now. The inspection period was today and the bidding ends tomorrow. There are some deals to be had but really, most of the cars and trucks are either beat or overpriced. You really have to shop and inspect them wisely and know that whatever you might buy, it will need some type of work done to it, so your purchase price should reflect that. -Chris

Ok really serious question. I heard that the L86 (6.2L) camshaft is a direct swap to the L83 (5.3L) engine. I have the L83 engine and have considered getting this kit but wondered if I can get the L86 kit. Will that WHOLE KIT work on my L83??? Or should I just swap over the L86 camshaft, intake manifold and put an upgraded throttlebody instead? Let me keep this in mind, I take the highway to work and back everyday, 5 days a week and that adds up to 300+ miles just to and from. So I'm on the highway easily 80% of the month.
