Rented a GMC Yukon 5 seater SWB in florida in 2019. It had that same engine as the Tahoe 355 bhp V8 but had cylinder deactivation cutting down to V4 which shows on the dash on motorway cruising, really handy and economical, thought your Tahoe would've had the same.

DId the same trip many years ago in a Brand New ( 4 miles on the clock ) FORD MUSTANG GT 5.0 V8 convertible. Took me well over 5 hours as there was heavy Friday afternoon traffic leaving LA. Drove it all the way to Vegas with the roof down and arrived at the Strip just as the sun was setting. Few years later did it again but in reverse, LV to LA and back in a Chrysler 300C HEMI V8 . Much LOVE for the V8s

I did Vegas a few years ago. British Airways messed up the fares and I got 1st class for a steal. I rented a Challenger and expected to get the baby V6 version. How wrong I was, I got a choice of red or black with the V8. I treated myself to a Nissan GTR for 24 hours which was fun. I recommend the Vegas Speedway experience too. I took the Mercedes GTR out and had two laps in the drift car too. Not gonna lie, I felt sick after 1 lap in it. USA is the place for car rental bar none.

Great video Matt. In addition to the US gallon being smaller than a UK gallon, you must always remember that the car manufacturer MSRP is quoted BEFORE taxes and fees. In California and Nevada the taxes could be between 8% and 10% plus whatever the DMV charges for registration fees. In the UK, car prices are always quoted including VAT.

VERY cool reference to Hunter Thompson / Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas...“We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like "I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive...." And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas.”

We did a 2,148mile road trip from Austin to Las Vegas back in Aug-Sept - we’d booked a large Chevy Suburban type truck but when we got to the rental desk at Austin the lady said they’d not got Suburban so had upgraded us to a bigger vehicle! - enter the Ford Expedition Max, a gigantic beast similar in shape to your Tahoe but with even more luggage space. It was fabulous and I hated having to give it back 2 weeks later in Vegas! Managed to get it to 21.8mpg by the end of the trip

I got upgraded to one of them in Tampa, even though I'd been a bit ratty with the rental manager. Maybe it was because I apologised. Either way, I think it was the best big SUV I'd ever driven in America. Wish I could get a RHD one in the UK as it makes my Disco 5 feel a bit cramped

In the US MSRP excludes sales tax which varies from state to state. So we need to compare the Tahoe to £60k cars (£50k plus VAT). In fact pretty much all prices are quoted excluding sales tax in the US. Always feels really weird to go up to the till and pay more than what is on the price tag!

Note that in North America posted prices never include sales taxes (though the US does not have a federal sales tax), whereas I presume in the UK VAT is included in prices. But yes… generally speaking North Americans get cheap well-equipped cars. Go and configure a German car on the US or Canada site and you will be shocked how much cheaper it is for the same engine/equipment.

Great video. I’ve done that drive many times - surprised you didn’t stop at the outlets in Barstow to pick up some Tommy gear 😂. The 15 (nobody uses the I in California) doesn’t strictly go through Death Valley…you have to head further north. Makes a great road trip from Vegas. Pick up the 395 and continue on to Yosemite. Which is a trip we did last year. And just back from a 1600 mile road trip to Albuquerque…in a Chevy Bolt EV! *for a minute I thought you were going to miss the thermometer (Baker also has two massive EV charging stations 😂)

I moved from Ireland to the US and you get used to the size of cars people drive. You actually don’t feel safe in small cars , especially on high ways. Its good to have a change of pace every once in a while - would be great to see the quality reviews but on some American cars you dont have in the UK. Also as a little reminder from someone that lives in the US now the MSRP doesnt include taxes, fees and registration. Also the US gallon is smaller than the UK gallon (and gas is so cheap) so it makes the mpg a tiny bit easier to stomach haha!
