Great video Mike, LOVE the gravy jobs from time to time, oh just a friendly tip on removing those intakes, just unbolt the intake cover from the intake and you can sneak it out underneath without fighting the harness connections on the backside of the cover...once the intake is out...plenty of access 😎 Still by far one of the easiest V8's to tear down IMHO...soooooo, thanks GM...lifters all day! 😊

Update: reluctantly ordered the tool for $58. For those who may want to measure with a dowel or other gauge, it’s 1 - 5/16” deep. Does anyone happen to have the measurement of the depth to the cam flat lobe instead of pulling a plug and looking for TDC on exhaust stroke or purchasing the tool you drop in for nearly $70 for (hopefully) a 1 time use for a DIY'r? Seems like it would be easy to measure with a dowel rod or something if we knew the depth. I've searched and can't believe someone hasn't posted it by now.

Should you set engine on top dead center before you pull the pump

Hey James, I don't think so. Nothing in the procedure specified that. Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
@throttlebottle5906

I think the deal is, with the cam follower raised up you'd have to greatly compress the spring, including the one inside the pump and piston, the drive rod may not line up right and the bolts probably won't be threaded in far enough to pull it down without tearing up the threads, it may even crack or warp the pump housing or lifter valley cover the pump bolts too. it may sound silly, but it could even cause engine block warping and alignment issues with cam bearings and more. torque values, tightening patterns and multiple passes to reach final torque is critical on engines and many other things. **so it would probably be wise to place the engine at TDC so the load is off the pump as much as possible

Have you ever heard of the hpfp tick? I have a ticking sound like a small clock. Nothing lifter base sounding. My local dealer said some can be noisier then others. No check engine light, no codes. Just curious if as my dealer said it’s normal. Ik it could be the injectors I’m hearing more possibly too.
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Chris, I have heard HPFP noise from wear on the lobe and camshaft, but never on the 5.3 liter chevy engine. Direct injection pumps and injector do create a normal audible noise compared to older type systems. If the noise is subtle it is most likely normal operating noise Ryan Wilsing, Technical Instructor

What if I install the high pressure fuel pump without maintaining the first cylinder position? Will it damage the cam or the pump directly!?
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Osama, It may damage the pump or cam because you could be bolting it down against the spring pressure of the pump. Keeping the engine in first cylinder position keeps the high side of the camshaft lobe down so the pump will sit flush when you bolt it down. I hope this helps! Ryan Wilsing
@OS_20
@OS_20 2 жыл бұрын
@@GoTechTraining the mechanic told me he installed it directly but I don’t know if i should tell him to remove it again and install it in the right way even though he already started the car but the car not running smoothly and when I put in the scanner it showed me that i got misfire in some of the cylinders 🙆🏻‍♂️ is this caused by the high pressure pump it self?
@OS_20

And also another question what if i just removed the old one and installed it back without doing this way is it ok or i have to do it whether if it’s new or old ?
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Osama, If he got the pump installed and seated it should be ok. The main reason you should locate the engine is so you don't force the pump down with the bolts. If your car is misfiring it could be from fuel pressure but, it also could be caused by several other factors. Anytime you replace a high pressure fuel pump on this vehicle you should locate the engine, old or new I hope this helps Ryan Wilsing

the struggle is real !!! it couldda been a van lol. i'd like to see those lines lines up close. i know service info says replace but my tendency would be to call bs. no different than diesel pipes and until common rail came out that was the way you cylinder dropout tested them with the engine running and greater pressure being applied. they want to sell parts and avoid liability is all.

I am getting a steady 45 psi on my car 2011 suburban 5.3. I feel like its dumping fuel because my fuel gauge goes down more than normal. I see everyone else mention 50 to 60 at the rails but i am using my expensive x431 scan tool to check everything. All of a sudden after 1 month of using e85 its been extremely bad. Fuel gauge drops fast. I cant find no wet fuel leaks by the engine compartment. My mpg normal at 15 to 18. Now feels like 6. I am also using a scan gauge to read the mpgs and its not bad hwy is 18mpg both dash and scan gaugeii. What the hell is there a small leak some where only when its on?

@GoTech hey man I love your videos, you're very logical and evidence driven so i wanted to ask you a quick question. I got a car that will turn over but not start, there are no engine codes, the scan tool does say there are emissions DTC detected and all of the emissions systems are flashing on the scan tool egr, o2, evap, and one other. The other thing is there was no cel before the issue, but now the cel will flash 4 times real slow with the car in the ON position before even trying to start it. It has over a 1/4 tank of gas and a fully charged battery. Is it emission related or misfire related, or both ?

People get so scared of fuel under pressure in the fuel rail. As a liquid, fuel is not compressible, the release of pressure when you disconnect the fuel rail line will only result in a very, very small volume of fuel being released, pretty much the equivalent amount of the expansion of the fuel rails and lines themselves.
