Pro Tip: Find a solid Powersports dealership that’s close by. Your hourly rate will crush what the title clerk there is making. Plus, they’re usually the backup F&I person, and you will need a backup to paper cars for you at some point.

I have transferred many cars from Indiana to Kentucky. The sheriff office have always just checked the vin number. And I pay them $5.00. The price has went up i guess to maybe $10.00. You must have the vin number check before going to the County Clerk’s office to pay the registration fee and sales tax if it wasn’t collected by the state the car was purchased in. You will also need the receipt of paid sales tax or you pay it the second time. It can sometimes be a pain. And you best have insurance on the car before going to the county clerk…….. You learn something new every day.

I know here in Florida we have contractors for "dealer services" and they will do all that annoying title/registration paperwork if you aren't sure you want to pay a full time person to do it. Those same places deal with registering fleets of trucks each year when it's registration time. The ones we have here don't require a mountain of paperwork... I'd keep hunting for an alternate 3rd party.

I was right where you're at about 15yrs ago. Just a thought to share with you... Find the right yardy that you can teach to do your title work too. For the volume of stock you have the money's best spent where it adds the most value. A good yardy can help you with photos and help Mrs Chevy Dude with her admin. Pay them a bit more than the going rate and grow them into a pillar of your business from the start. Proud of you mate, you're doing great. Play the long game! Cheers from Australia.

He's mentioned $25 an hour, which is pretty high for that type of work. If they're experienced, and they help with photos and a maybe 1 or 2 other responsibilities, it would be worth it. However, I think Mike should start someone around $14, for a probationary period, then increase pay every few months if the person is doing a great job.

I'm surprised that the sheriff's department is doing those inspections. In my state it's not like the DMV to give up any vehicle related revenue or relinquish control of anything vehicle related like that. If this were 1962 in small town USA I could possibly see a back woods sheriff's department doing something like that, but in 2022 the state agencies are very protective and territorial over their fields. I wonder if the Kentucky DMV is contracting that service out to the local sheriff's department? I know that in my state some agencies will contract out work like that to local agencies in certain situations, but it's very rare.
