How do you deal with the Takedown aspect of a Wrestler who's in a Grappling competition? Or what do you do when someone's better at take downs?
As a Wrestler who got into Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I can tell you that I used to put a lot of focus on takedowns.
When I would go to a BJJ competition. I would do everything I could in order to get on top of the person.
Oftentimes if someone pulled me into Guard it kind of sucked the wind out of my sails. I wouldn't have the points for getting the takedown and it took away my forward momentum.
In this video I respond to a question from Cassie who has a son, Ryan, who is competing in local superfight matches.
His matches have been going well but she's now noticing that the area gyms are offering more wrestling in their BJJ training. And their gym does not offer it.
The question from them is how do you approach a situation in a competition when your opponent has superior takedowns.
Chad and I both show options as to how we deal with this situation in BJJ tournaments or competitions.
The main idea is to converse your energy on the feet and save it for once you get to the ground. In my case I use a Guard Pull into Half Guard for the sweep.
But I'll save the details and let you see them in the video. :)
Hope the video is useful!

@Tom Evers Apparently you don't understand the capabilities of what can happen with a fireman's carry, to which I seriously doubt based on your claim. This is only the beginning to many different and very damaging possibilities once the fireman's carry has been executed properly. You, who have claimed to have coached for 20 years should already know this, as well as the damaging effects of the banned action of stacking or otherwise. Just to make sure everyone who reads my reply, I am including an example of a fireman's carry so they too can use their imagination as to what can be done when a fireman's carry is executed properly and what can be done once that has been executed. It might possibly help you to understand better to look at pro wrestling and the many different "gimmick moves" that are used once the fireman's carry has started, leading into the "gimmick move". It's not hard to understand the variables that can be execeuted from that position, and the damage it can inflict, depending on what move is executed once the individual is in the height of the fireman's carry. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnS0mWSBa9JkjJo I hope you have a wonderful day as well, and may YHWH keep you in His grace.

This is so important for certain areas of the USA. In my area, wrestling may not be as big as football but it’s still a big thing so a lot of people in my area have grappling knowledge and you do have to adapt to what you are likely going to face most. It’s in fact so popular that at least half of those in the classes I go to wrestled in school, myself included.

One note bout putting the neck in their neck like that is a good wrestler will instantly think head an arm throw think of that kinda school yard head lock pivot to the ground move but done by a trained wrestler. Most wrestlers know anytime the head is put in that spot that's the perfect situation to take what they've given you and pivot step grab the head and easy peezy to head and arm pin yet in jits to a arm triangle or arm intangle choke.

as a wrestler I love these. One of the things I don't do as a wrestler when sparing with BJJ guys is go for takedowns. I've always been a defensive wrestler but a good option for wrestlers is to not go for a forward takedown. take the time to pop use an elbow to pop up an arm left or right... sidestep and go for a side takedown... Ideally (for ME this may not work for others) I want to be either coming in from the side right or left... and if I'm lucky taking them down onto their belly... Also another big thing for wrestlers... learn to use your legs. there are a large number of leg related wrestling skills that I notice many wrestlers don't utilize... and if it isn't obvious... learn some BJJ... we're grapplers there shouldn't be this huge divide between us rolling is half the fun I don't care if you do Judo, BJJ, or Wrestle there should be respect and a feeling of camaraderie between all grapplers.

New to BJJ so don't judge too harshly if I am totally off. Have not wrestled since Highschool but have used my grappling skills on the street as a LEO. So as a short wrestler, with tall Chad there, when he sits down I just need to recognize what he is doing and either step back, if I can, or drop straight down on top of him and slide down to his ankles and turn him over with a leg twist? What I don't understand about BJJ is how they score points in a match. Do you only win if you get a submission or what? On the street if I see someone has these skills I just go straight to a baton as the skill level of our criminals has increased dramatically and I can risk getting choked out and loosing my gun. So it's either stick them or shoot them.

I did judo jiujitsu and wrestling, I do rely on my wrestling more than anything the people i think are tough in jiu jitsu have a solid grip, are really good at breaking down posture and are experts in using their legs to wrestle, these tend to frustrate me because it's hard to pass someone who can use their legs and hard to pressure them when they keep breaking you down. Where i succeed against jiu jitsu guys is tie ups, scrambles takedowns, and top pressure all these combined i usually ride my opponent and wear them down for the bout.

Hey. i was talking about 3:41-3:36 time on the video. At 3:41 you put your hands on his neck and were trying to secure holding him down so he couldnt do anything? So i noticed that if he were fast enough in that second that you were trying to get a secure hold around his neck and head? he could muay thai knee you in your face or chest, and stop you. If you were talking about a controlled competition? then yes, your strategy might work. BUT if you are talking about real life? self defense? or someone who knows what they are doing trying to take you down in the street? then yeahh, any number of things can go wrong with these strategies.. I see alot of these technique videos are interesting, and they look great alot of times. But what no videos show is the REALITY of a real life street situation. when the attacks are very fast and the person being attacked reacts in different ways. there are simply no guaranteed outcomes. when adrenaline kicks in? people even surprise themselves, with strength, courage, techniques, its alot about acting on instinct, subconscious and muscle memory. or people break free from that attacker and run faster than they ever ran before. I think THESE are the types of videos that need to be made. because in a real life situation there is no demonstration of events. and infact there is just no time to even think. you have to always be aware, and be prepared for just about anything. That is what im talking about..
@terryavery9918

"instinct, subconscious and muscle memory"... what you just mentioned there is probably the very key to the Jeet Kune Do style taught by Bruce Lee. "Be like water" in every situation! Use what you know and practice it so much that you start doing it without even thinking about it.

@terryavery9918
@terryavery9918 4 жыл бұрын
The back of the head grab is only really good for controlling where the opponent can look as well as pulling the head into the chest. The back of the neck is the preferred location to where more holding strength can be applied to force direction and even momentum. Think about striking options as well when considering using these techniques in a real fight. To hold the back of the head with striking is far more dangerous, vs holding the neck and striking areas of the body and is harder to escape.

Idk if is gree with your sentiment of trying to get the ground game going straight away. IMm nto gonna complain about it, obviously,myour style is yours, that's how it should be. Maybe it's from my background in judo but i don't like pulling guard. I feel like jiu jitsu is supposed to be an efficient way to win a fight, and the reason it specialises in ground work is because lots of fights will go to the ground so you need to be prepared. It is true that most fights go to the ground but it is also true that every fight starts from standing. So i believe jiu jitsu isn't about groundwork, but rather about winning a fight efficiently. And if that fight ends witha. Standing submission, that's still jiu jitsu. F that fight ends with a throw that winds the opponent and you get a free opportunity or they can't recover (obviously don't throw with that kind of malicious intent) that's still jiu jitsu. If you subdue your opponent in a pin and as they try to escape maneuvre to different pins keeping the pressure on until the hold becomes naturally so tight they submit, that's still jiu jitsu.f you're fighting a big dude who you know you can't take down so you pull guard and try to get as much fo an initial ground advantage as possible and slowly inch your way to a victory, that's still jiu jitsu. I don't think it's accurate to judge good jiu jitsu by good ground work, because that's missing the whole idea of jiu jitsu, in my opinion, which is effectively the same principle that has been restated in judo since it was first created: maximum efficiency, minimum effort. Whether or not that happens on the ground or in the stand up is irrelevant That's what i believe
@DSpencer189
@DSpencer189 6 жыл бұрын
jimmy alderson pulling guard in a street fight situation isn't smart.. and you got to know sone takedowns to get a fight in the BJJ world.. my one complaint about BJJ tourneys is pulling guard
@jimmyalderson1639
@jimmyalderson1639 6 жыл бұрын
DSpencer189 i agree with the first statement, thou i don't know if the second assertion is quite true. I think at the top level you don't really need to know takedowns, you just need your opponent to think you do. So a basic single or double leg is really all you need. Basically what i'm trying to say is that at the top level, to me, it looks like even the guys who know takedowns and throws don't actually try to do them. I think it's for a similar reason Chewy mentions, i think they're in too much of a rush and feel like if they don't go to the ground then they're not doing jiu jitsu. So at the top level it's more the mutual assured destruction by both sides believing that the other knows takedowns that creates tension, but in the end to me it looks like all of them always have the intention of pulling guard to begin with, takedowns are more of a bluff
@andresgreene4913
@andresgreene4913 6 жыл бұрын
Let's not forget context here guys. The question posed was about sport BJJ, and specifically BJJ competition. BJJ as a sport focuses on groundwork, so what people wanna see in competitions, overwhelmingly, as spectators and competitors, is groundwork, not standup. Besides that,there are almost no pure BJJ guys who can consistently outperform wrestlers, judoka, or any other standup specialists when it comes to takedowns. What you can do is mitigate/circumvent the damage so you can focus on your strengths, and that's what this video's about.
@jimmyalderson1639
@jimmyalderson1639 6 жыл бұрын
Andres Greene i have no criticism of the strategy against wrestlers. It'd be ridiculous ofr me to assert that trying to defeat a specialist in their specialist area is 'real jiu jitsu'. I'm just talking in general people are too happy to pull guard, they have no awareness and no interest in having any kind of good stand up game because they feel like because they specialise in groundwork they don't need it. Of fourse in the sport you don't, but playing the rules of the game isn't the same as understanding the art. I'm saying that the idea of pulling guard as a default tactic, against someone whose proficiency at takedowns is known to be equal or somewhat equal to your own, is bad spirit and is not helpful to your understanding of jiu jitsu or your proficiency if you were to use your jiu jitsu outside of a sports environment. I say the same thing of judoka who don't show any interest in newaza, they may win the sport of judo because of the rules of the game but that does not make them any better judoka or better prepared for live combat, in fact it'd make them worse. Of course in thsi clntext pulling guard is perfectly reasonable, but it's because of the reasoning behind it. I'm just saying in a general case i don't like the idea that a person will just inprovise their way through one segment of combat merely because their sport rules promote it
@andresgreene4913
@andresgreene4913 6 жыл бұрын
The fact that a kickboxer kicks more than he punches doesn't mean that he doesn't understand kickboxing. It means kickboxing as an art focuses more on kicks than punches. The assertion that kickboxing should incorporate more punches is a separate issue. BJJ as an art is about grappling on the ground, whether it should include more standup grappling (I agree with you that it should), is a separate issue. A BJJ practitioner who isn't proficient in standup grappling isn't denying himself a fuller understanding of BJJ. BJJ as an art, with it's near total emphasis on ground techniques, is denying its practitioners a fuller understanding of grappling in general. But every fighting art does this with something, because no fighting art covers everything.So basically, BJJ is what it is, but would be better if it was something else.I don't think we actually disagree.

In MMA just don't pull any guard. Beeing on your back in MMA isn't a good idea. Look at MMA Fights, the most fighters will immediately try to stand up when they end up on their backs. Punching from above is a critical factor in a MMA fight. Maybe if you are very good at BJJ you have the chance to act calmly before the first punch landed. Once punches are landing on your face your BJJ skills will decrease fast. So be quick and get to top position or try to stand up.

I like your vids, and even this vid, but I do want to point out one thing that bothers me. That "dancing" around you're talking about is literally the standup component of grappling. I understand you like the groundwork and want to get that going, but this is exactly what has bothered me about BJJ; this dismissive aspect of standup grappling, which is _so_ important in ANY OTHER grappling-related martial context (including and especially for self-defense). Case in point... people in high level MMA don't really play guard. For decades now, the upper echelon has consisted of notable _wrestlers_ that know enough BJJ to get submission awareness, who then go out and _wrestle_ . Daniel Cormier is the most striking example of this, because he was/is literally just a blue belt in BJJ. That's how powerful the ability to dictate where, when, and _if_ , the fight goes to the ground is. That's also why I really like Eddie Bravo's Combat Jiu Jitsu... it keeps BJJ honest.

Do you know the head snap is a classic /basic wrestler move and one of the first things you teach wrestler to maintain balance. If they can not defend against that the are not what they claim to be. That is with 7 years wrestling and 20 years coaching. By no means do I think I am great but I have rolled in college with my coach who was an alternate on the Olympic team and weighed 80 lbs less than me. When you are as good as those guys you are laughing at what you are showing. Wrestlers do not get pulled or lose balance unless they want to that is why BJJ got destroyed by so many. And when you try to defend against wrestling you are not using bjj u r using wrestling. Finally there are aggressive and defensive wrestlers. Those who join your gyms tend to be to aggressive and poorly controlled otherwise they would be more focused on wrestling. Reason being coaching jobs, scholarships, Olympics, etc. and opportunity to train mma in grappling. Without getting punched in the face or getting brain damage.

What about working on sprawling and transitioning off a sprawl into a figure four giotine? Or using a kimura grip to counter a single leg attempt? Kimura against a single will either break their grip on your leg. It forces the wrestler to let go.Or give you a reversal into a kimura sweep. Which can transition into an armbar. How about sprawling on a double and working the anaconda choke. In mma their are sweeps that have worked well against wrestling bases. Newton vs Hughes 1 Newton used a situp or hip bump sweep to reverse him. Miguel Torres used the butterfly hook sweep and hip bump sweep on Demetrius Johnson successfully.

It's unfortunate that these types of videos get published as truth misleading a lot of people. I doubt this is a "Proven" strategy. If you are looking for answers on how to deal with Wrestlers in a BJJ environment...send them to Dojo where high level (elite HS or NCAA-level) wrestlers and BJJ folks roll together. KY as a state has so few wrestlers who reach a level to even make it to the NCAAs... it would be "extremely difficult" for any BJJ Dojo in KY to gather the kinds of wrestlers needed to prove ANY COMPETITION STRATEGY versus Wrestlers. This video is reminds me of a person asking a an Alaskan fisherman: "What's best strategy to kill lions in Africa?" BTW, I'm not saying Kentucky doesn't have its studs: the Ervins, Lampe brothers, Blackwell, Nathan Boston...but they don't all roll BJJ at his Dojo....and wrestling is not a very popular or successful sport in KY compared to the rest of the US where wrestling is much more successful. So this might work in KY...but be careful using it outside KY...where the wrestling is better. For ex. no wrestler would let a BJJ guy control the standing tie ups...unless the wrestler were very novice.

Not a single mention of conditioning. When I wrestled, a huge part of it was keeping up the pressure. Because you're going for the takedowns and the pin, you're going full out the entire time. Compared to wrestling, jiu jitsu is slow and methodical. It's just a difference in the style, especially since wrestling is more of a pure sport vs. BJJ that was developed more with combat in mind and moved into being a sport. Not knocking BJJ in any sense either, I'm just pointing out what I see as differences. Anyway, wrestlers are constantly going full speed and looking to takedown the other guy who is working just as hard to get you down. Takedowns are worth points and points win matches. Wrestlers get a lot of their conditioning from simply rolling a lot. The strong backs and iron hips come from constantly busting ass in practice. It's fighting fit, so to speak. Your conditioning has to be good, because you're going full blast for your entire match. The wrestler likes to be on top because it allows them to press that advantage of constant pressure and fast pace that lots of BJJ players aren't used to. One thing I noticed in going from wrestling and trying out BJJ is that a BJJ player has an entire library of techniques that can take advantage of a wrestler trying to escape. Especially if the wrestler is wearing shoes. A heel hook can catch a wrestler out more often than you might think. Collegiate wrestlers simply don't train for that sort of thing very much, because an escape isn't something you're specifically guarding against. If your technique is good, escape isn't really all that likely. And if you do lose them and they escape, it's far more important to get reset to avoid the reversal. This all has to happen fast, because as soon as they escape, they want the reversal. You need to get defensive to avoid getting taken. A BJJ player is far more relaxed and capable of extending that scramble for it to come out in their favor. Especially since submissions are OK in BJJ vs. how you have to win in a wrestling match.

Hopefully that makes sense, it's pretty hard describing wrestling moves without being able to demonstrate. Come to think of it, why don't I ever see headlocks in MMA? Seems like they'd be great for choking people out (without the arm in).
