In the Novel, it is actually Ying who revealed to YiChen that he had a prenup with MoSheng, and they never consummated the marriage, as MoSheng always had YiChen in her heart and no one would be able to replace him. Whilst Ying did try to subtly make an advance on her, he remained more or less a gentleman, and MoSheng chose to remain ignorant to Ying's feelings for her. It is after Ying met with YiChen, that YiChen went home to ask MoSheng about her 7 years in the US, to realise, like him, she would never accept a compromise. MoSheng woke up in the middle of the night to find YiChen in the study, he pulled her across his lap and kissed her tenderly. MoSheng noted that even during their best times during University, he had never been so tender and gentle. He then finally came to ask her about her time in America~ In the series, YiChen does say that given the chance to rewrite history, he would not go back to do it over. I think it took Ying's admission that YiChen understood how precious MoSheng was~ perhaps if they didn't go through the 7 years of Separation, he wouldnt realise he could possibly love MoSheng even more than he already did.

What is your question specifically? Their relationship is as clear as can be. He loved her dearly and after his downfall. he did everything he can to protect her by sending her off to study in the US knowing the mother did not care for MoSheng. He didn't want MoSheng's future in that city to be effected by his name. He too was afraid life would be hard for her and even ask Yichen to join her, but it backfired.

YC later explained to MS’s mother that although he never did it directly but his action trickle down and had cause his dad’s business down fall (hence the death). So, MS’s Dad asking Yichen to leave with MS, we can assumed that he never knew that their deaths were linked to him. Hence, his motivation for MS to leave was to protect her and also shield her from knowing the crimes he will be blamed for. Yichen also explained later that he was the one to put MS’s dad’s case to rest by finding all the others that were the main offender (basically implying that MS’s dad was left to take all the blame in the first place).

MoSheng’s father was a corrupt official, his corruption indirectly caused the death of YiChen’s parents. The funds he withheld / or defrauded was to pay YiCheng’s dad’s business, so other contractors can be paid. But because debtors chased YiChen’s father for money, causing him to fall at the construction site to his death. His Mother stopped taking her medicine, and died, so it was suicide, because she couldnt live without him. MoSheng’s mother despised her husband’s corruption, but didnt divorce because of MoSheng, so indirectly disliked MoSheng for depriving her freewill. MoSheng’s mother later explained that her husband did eventually release the funds, but was held up, and YiChen’s father’s death was an accident. YiChen was the prosecuting lawyer in the fraud case, so he knew MoSheng’s father’s corruption WAS true. Mo’Sheng’s mother feared that YiChen wanted revenge, and demanded reassurance from him. Though YiChen didnt owe her anything, he did say “they [my parents], gave me 10 years, I want MoSheng for life” Note: when MoSheng first told YiChen she got married, he started excessive drinking and went back to non stop work habits. Which landed him in the hospital … Based on YiMei’s description that YiChen resembled his mother (when it came to stubborn devotion to love) … as viewers, we can interpret that as YiChen also choosing suicide at the thought of losing MoSheng forever
