I actually met Chi Coltrane one evening at her home in Los Angeles. She held Bible studies at the time. Back in the 1980s. Her gospel songs were so comforting. She prayed over me, holding her hand just above my head, and she could tell the stress I was under. I felt a great relief afterward. There were six girls there that evening and I was the only man present. It was an honor to meet her, to share those prayers and to keep that precious moment in memory. God bless you Chi, forever & ever!❤

I discovered Chi Coltrane when shopping in a record store downtown and they were playing Thunder and Lightning as it just came out (yeah remember when you could browse a record shop while they played the latest tunes)and holy shit I was blown away I immediately picked the 45 I later on bought her first three albums I never got to see her I'm from Chicago and was bummed out to find she had played in Chicago a number of times and at a place on Belmont and Halsted called the Quiet Night a place I was familiar with and had been to a number of times I was surprised no one really knew about her other than her Single T&L when I heard people talk about top female singers and they would say who? i would get slightly pissed she was definitely a top notch singer and keyboard player and greatly overlooked and underappreciated she wrote some really great tunes and could rip out a tune like nobody else what a voice and what heart !

She disappeared from the L.A. music scene about the time I met my wife (1971). She’d always be billed with groups like Joy of Cooking, Joyous Noise and her name, Coltrane, reminds us of the jazz icon who saw the ineffable, chose spirituality and never slammed heroin again. I’m talking to a Dutch friend who brings up Chi Coltrane appearing in the Netherlands, and it took me a minute to process it. I used to ask about her before there was an Internet, so disappearing was still possible if no one else remembered her. Even my wife doesn’t remember when we saw her. Almost 50 years ago, why should she? I thought she had something; but I’m Dutch by ancestry. My wife is a Scot. They have their own dark ballads.

There are KZbin videos from 1978 featuring Chi Coltrane and then a few from around 2009. So what was she doing for those 30 years in between? Anyone know?

From What I understand after a couple of lp's produced, she felt strangled of the recordings not being able to produce the music quite the way she liked, the pressure of the LA scene, being on the road constantly trying to balance her music career and maintaining a relationship with her friends, not getting any rest and suffering from burn out.. She took several years off and found spirituality until recently when she returned to produce music. I have missed her music dearly during these years and glad she is back and doing well. It was difficult to find out any information of what she was doing or where she even was during this time.

She had a successful career in Europe in the 70's and 80's. She had a relentless tour schedule and handled most every aspect of her career. By 1986 she had a rare sleep disorder from fatigue but still toured relentlessly up until about 1991. After that she couldn't stay awake for more than two hours at a time and fell asleep at red lights. She spent most of her time sleeping up until about 2007 she discovered a supplement that helped her overcome this condition. It took about a year for it to take effect and by 2009 she was ready to perform again.
