During the Battle of Weihaiwei, the Imperial Japanese Army experienced heavy snow and low temperature, while being under-equipped with water, food and fuel. Nagai reflected in his song the hardship Japanese soldiers experienced and their discontentment about the war. The song, which was popular at the time of its publication and is described by scholars to have an upbeat melody, was said to be favoured by Ōyama Iwao. It was also taught and sung in Japanese schools during the late Meiji period.

1 Marching in the snow. Walking on ice. It is hard to distinguish between the river and the road. Can't leave a dead horse unattended. We are in enemy country. At a loss, I smoked a cigarette. I only have two left. I'm wretched. 2 It is too cold to cook fish or rice. Still, we manage to survive. It's too cold, and we are sitting by the campfire. The smoke from burning raw wood is terrible. We brag and enjoy ourselves, Eating the last of the bacon. 3 It's nice and easy not to have to change clothes. I use my backpack as a pillow and my cloak as a warmer. The snow is melting with my body heat. The mat on my back is soaked. I never thought I would sleep here. The night moon is mocking us. 4 We've sacrificed our lives in this war. Let's attack with the determination to die. We would be happier if we were lucky enough to die. This jacket we collected from the people is proof of that. They pressure us to keep fighting until we die. The military has no plans to send us back to Japan alive.
