Chiang Mai Birds Video: Thai Birding Birds of Northern Thailand Chiang Dao Chiang Mai Chiang Rai
This video, Chiang Mai Birds and Birds of Northern Thailand, showcases a decent representation of the common birds of northern Thailand and South East Asian region and a few of the rarer Thai bird species (green-tailed sunbird, Emerald cuckoo).
All photos were taken by myself on location in Thailand between the years 2014 and 2019. Most photos were taken in the area of Chiang Mai University and the Chiang Mai Zoo in the northwest corner of Chinag Mai.
The video provides a brief, but representative, sample of the resident avian species of Chiang Mai, Chiang Dao and locations such as Doi Suthep and Doi Inthanon in northern Thailand. Also, as some of these photos were taken during the winter months, a few non-resident winter visitors have been included, too (Japanese Bush Warbler).
Included in this video are birds such as bulbuls, barbets, mynahs, flycatchers, drongos and others.
Chiang Mai, sometimes written as Chiengmai or Chiangmai, is the largest city in northern Thailand and the capital of Chiang Mai Province. It is 700 km (435 mi) north of Bangkok near the highest mountains in the country, including Doi Inthanon.
Chiang Mai (meaning "New City" in Thai) was founded in 1296 as the new capital of Lan Na, succeeding the former capital, Chiang Rai. The city's strategic location on the Ping River (a major tributary of the Chao Phraya River) and its proximity to major trading routes contributed to its historic importance. (wikipedia)

No list is complete, of course, without the Asian Koel. For almost half the year approximately January-May the male mating call is synonymous with the rural soundtrack. In Thai they are called "nok gawow" due to their sound "GA-WOW! GA-WOW! A rather mournful lonely whistling sound which seems to grow higher in pitch as the days get hotter, and perhaps the bird gets more desperate for a mate.

The Asian Koel is indeed constantly heard all over Thailand-I just didn't have a decent photo of one from Chiang Mai

@@birdwatchinglife We live in the middle of rice fields and next to a section of fruiting trees north of Chiang Mai and spend a lot of time bird spotting, often right out the front window. Lots of myna's, red-whiskered bulbuls, spotted dove's, Oriental magpie-robins, etc. at the feeding/bathing station, plus of course Mr. & Mrs. Asian Koel and the similarly large and intrusive Greater Coucal. Biggest treat so far was a mob of Red-billed Blue Magpies came swooping in the other day, unfortunately too quick for photos, but wow - amazing birds! Thanks for your video.

@@nongthip Thanks for your comments. You must be near Chiang Dao. When I'm in Chiang Mai, I often take the bus to Chiang Dao and stay at the Chiang Dao Huts resorts-great place to stay in North Thailand.
